Rules
Spoiler
1. Spam. For the purposes of RB, one word posts are generally considered spam. Likewise, posts that are nothing but *actions like this* are also be considered spam. Remember that the quality of the post's content is much better than the speed of your response.
2. This isn't the Play by Post or Town forum, nor is it the Silly Message Board Games or Structured Games forum. Please avoid continuous roleplay or mock battles and fights such as the "competition for control of the universe".
3. If it's already a thread, don't bring it to RB. RB has such a huge range of subject matter even restricted to the little snippets that probably don't warrant their own thread, it doesn't need legitimate thread topics cluttering it up as well. The exception to this is to bring something that is off-topic from one thread, but on-topic for RB and the subject doesn't warrant a thread of its own.
4. Don't advertise other threads in RB. Just because these new threads move at speeds more appropriate to a message board than an IM session doesn't mean you need to come over to RB and brow beat people into posting in your latest brainchild.
5. Please don't post single line posts alerting us to your current status -- as in "I'm back." This is Random Banter, not "How to stalk Random GitP forum members."
6. Don't poke, kick or bump the thread. It will move at whatever pace it wants to. Also, please refrain from Captain Obvious comments akin to "My, the thread is fast today."
7. Random Banter can only be as good, or as entertaining, as you make it. Demands to be entertained will fall on deaf ears unless you can add something more meaningful to the conversation.
8. As this is a public forum, where the current topic is nicely recorded for you, and not a conversation where you could have missed the beginning, please refrain from asking something to the effect of "What's the topic?". Please take the time to read up a bit first.
9. Thread Creator must include the words "Random" and "Banter" as well as the thread #. Try to be concise as well.
10. Every post should contain two visible, legible complete sentences, Subject and Predicate. C'mon, make your old English teachers proud.
11. Remember, Random Banter is not your IM client. If you want to have a back and forth discussion with just one person, look in their contact information for IM details.
12. Whenever a new thread is created, all "first post", "first page", and all posts of that nature will be deleted by the administrators. Please avoid doing this, as it is frustrating for them to deal with one-lined posts like this.
13. Double-posting is not your friend. We have edit buttons for a reason.

As I remembered it from when I hosted my thread a few years back we all cordially asked one another who should get the next one and it was mutually agreed around 1500. Pages isn't a good way to judge things, as you can change the amount of posts per page.
Bring back mutual decisions I say. Harumph, grumble etc.

I'd marry you if I could.
So many old texts . . . in so many languages. So pretty.

Mmmm, Old French; Old Norse, Judith, Magic and Alchemy, LATIN! So little time; whose bright idea was it to make a twenty-four hour day anyway?
Really, what's wrong with with a twenty-eight hour day?
It'd give meus more time to do the things we love.
Like distort the fabric of space-time even further to let us read more. And create terror.
Honestly Little Sister, getting your pick up time wrong so I had to waste two and a half hours. And I was bookless.
And it was cold and wet. No shelter either. D'you have any idea how hard it is to efficiently daydream when you keep getting distracted by every which way by the wind and rain. Also annoying brats who weren't related to me and cars.

Definitely should've gotten the last gun-jumping RB locked. Now it'll be seen as an acceptable habit.
What do you mean the last gun jumping RB how about the other gun jumpers before me, and in my defence I'm still pretty new. Plus it was only a couple of posts early. We should probably go back to the old way of doing it though.

Koorli, have you ever heard of The Heliand? I read it (in its modern English translation) for my history of premodern europe class this year. Written around 800 by either a Carolingian who had spent a great deal of time among the Saxons (German Saxons) or a Saxon who had spent a great deal of time among the Christians (in either case, probably a monk). Basically it's a translation of the story of the Gospels into Saxon -
Except instead of just translating language, the author translated culture. Jerusalem become a hill-fort, the Last Supper takes place in a mead hall, and Jesus' disciples are his warrior cohort.
It's awesome.
Also: Perhaps we should have a rule about when the next thread can be posted written into the first post?

Perhaps.
Doesn't really matter to me since I'm not the most frequent of this thread, but I'm sure the people insistent on (the default) page 50 would be pleased.
And for the hell of it since I am on enough, but not energetic enough to post all the time...
I call dibs on the next thread if not already called. (if pre-dibs is present, then I call the next thread after that.) I don't much care if I miss it. I just feel like calling dibs.

Oh right, almost-triplet.
DeeRee, you'll have a very fantastic present for Christmas. I promise.
Curse the Atlantic Ocean! Otherwise I'd try to actually send one through the post. I've already got my eye on a pressie for a certain piece of ablutionary furniture with a very impressive degree - probably in Physics.
A quick internet search has given me some lovely online sites with English or OE translations. Or both. Happy is Koorilithulu.

Rissy has strange dreams. Like this:
Mum: So, what would you like for Christmas?
Me: Hmm, how about an original Shakespeare folio? Please?
Mum: Let me look into that. You sure that's what you want?
Me: Yes. Plus, the Bodleian had one (admittedly they sold it to Sir Paul Getty for £3.5 million in 2003), so why can't I have one?
Mum: True, true. But I thought you wanted a first edition of the Bible?
Me: That can wait until my birthday. Just put the folio on your credit card, and let's be done with this! I need to go to class.
The silliest thing is that I don't even celebrate Christmas.

Strange dreams are considerably better than my dreams. Whenever I remember a dream, it's exactly like reality, except stuff that happens in the dream doesn't actually happen in reality (like me checking to see if there is a new OotS in a dream, and there is, but when I go to check in real life there isn't). It's pretty boring.

New thread!
*boogies*
Anyways, I officially declare the superintendent of my town's schools to be a complete and totally piece of crap. Because he lacked the foresight to cancel school today, I had the great pleasure of walking through lots of snow to school, and tons of wet sleet on the way back.
It was wet, cold, and miserable.

Listen you, don't you read Da Roolz? NO ACTION ONLY POSTS, PUNK!
I jest, of course. Were I actually this much of a jerk to get angry about rules of a thread I rarely frequent, that'd make me a terrible person. Carry on Nameless.
I've always considered breakfast to be evil. Looking at me with it's bacon-smile, and it's sunny-side-up eyes. I know it's plotting something.

Heh. Aren't those oceans pesky things?
I only have a week till classes are done. Well, eight days. A week from today I have an oral final during which I will talk about (I just decided about half an hour ago) the role the lower class played in the worldviews of Machiavelli's The Prince, Marx's writings, Gandhi's philosophy, and Cicero's "On Duties" (all texts we read for the class). Ways they were considered to have power, etc. I only have to talk for eight minutes but it's still stressful . . . .
I also have a 5-8 page paper on how pre-modern Europe was defined by its encounters with other peoples. Not that long, but headachy.
And a big final on the Ancient Near East - New Kingdom Egypt, early Israel, the Hittites and Mittani, Assyria . . . .
Plus a Spanish final the idea of which I hate because I know how hard the teacher (she's not a *professor* - no PhD) grades.
Stressstressstress till this all is over! Then I get to go home (on December 17th) and stay there till 17 January, when school resumes. A beautiful month with no work.
