Congratulations to the new moderators. Respect to those brave and responsible souls whose vigil allows the rest of us to share, unimpeded by nasty interferences, this interesting community.
New mods? Since when does GiTP get new mods? This is new, weird and exciting.
I like it. I am kinda curious how you new mods got the job, though. I bet there was more to it than simply being some of the most awesome people around, yeah?

1. Collect most well behaved and helpful board members.
2. Filter out those likely to abandon their post (lots of long absenses etc.)
3. Apply additional filters until only a few remain.
4. Contact remaining candidates to see ifthey want to become a Mod. Stress secrecy and ask that they carry on as normal so as not to arouse suspicion.
5. If those who want the job are less than or equal to optimal amount, give them the job.
5. If there are more than that who want the job then Rich, Roland & Rawhide hire an arena and make them fight in a gladiatorial style until only the strongest remain (this step may or may not be where Rich got the inspiration for the latest comic arc).
6. Inject successful candidates with the nanoprobes so they are immune to the Mind Control.
7. Introduce them to the rest of the forum. Begin Modding.
Spoiler
Secret step 8. Reintroduce Roland to the concept of sleep, something he has not been able to do in some time

EDIT: Also... You aren't serious about the clip fellow are you?
Actually, we each have our own personal Clippy. He's kept in a cage, and when we find a poster committing a serious rules infraction (burning orphanages, eating puppies, spamming), we torture Clippy instead until we're calm again, because the technology to punch someone through the Internet is still under development.

Wait, what? Since when can't we eat puppies anymore?
It was right after the Baby Punching Ban of '07.

Ooo... Now I have to try extra hard to be a good and helpful playgrounders, so that I will be chosen to be the next mod when the time arises.
With great power comes great responsibility. I, personally, find the notion of becoming a mod around here absolutely terrifying. But hey, that's just me.

Might behoove you to take a look at the behavior of the new mods. Also to note that the "youngest" of the new mods has been here almost 3 years. That should also indicate something.
These people are overwhelmingly viewed as pillars of this community, so if you want to be a mod someday, this is what you should strive to be too.

This had me curious as to who the youngest of the new mods was. Mark Hall is based on join date, but he was on the forums previously as Mr. Nexx for a couple years before being Mark Hall.
So, that would be me, who joined in February 2007. So, all the new mods have been here 3+ years.
Just to kind of pile on here, it's very important to keep in mind that being here for a long time is not a guarantee that you will be considered for a mod position if and when it's decided that more are needed. In a similar respect, having a lot of posts, or being well known or well liked among the community are no guarantors, either.
To clarify, don't make "becoming a mod" your goal here. Let your time here be its own reward. And if someday in the future your time as a friendly and helpful face in the playground causes you to be endowed with certain extra responsibilities, then it will be an honor well deserved. But if the day never comes... well, that should be fine too.

This is probably not a line of discussion you want to continue. <cough>Forum rules <cough>.

Well-said. I recommend that people have fun in the Playground rather than aspiring to a position of power never-ending unpaid labor. With luck, we won't be looking for new mods for a long, long time, and by then, they'll probably be selected by sentient robots or alien overlords.

Yeah, I can understand this.

This. So much.
For example, I think I can say I am pretty well known across the playground, usually friendly and I've even heard a couple of people say the playground be the same without me.(Which is totally untrue >.>)
However, I don't think I would even be considered for mod-dom because I am a pretty rash and young poster who has a number of infractions on his name.(Even though they're all expired)
I'd say that mod-dom should not be a goal, doing the things which could qualify you for possible mod-dom are good goals. Be friendly, help people, generally post a lot(Because it's fun!) and know and follow the rules.
Phoekun has it right.

I'd say that the starting point is pointing at a person and saying, "Will I be able to find anyone who says, 'Oh no, not that guy' when this person posts?", and only proceeding if the answer is a firm No. Follow up with "Will people on different sides of an argument say, 'Oh thank goodness, it's the voice of reason'?" (Yes) and to some extent "Did this person lead an effort to make this forum's people work together for a common goal?" (Yes)
