Default [3.5, feat] Whalepocalypse from the Sky

Earthscorn Summoning
As you finish chanting your spell, nothing happens...except a steadily growing shadow above your opponent.
Prerequisites: Caster level 9th
Benefit: Whenever you cast a Conjuration spell that creates an object or a creature, you may designate it to appear anywhere within range, as long as you have line of effect to that location.
If the spell's effect would deal fall damage to another creature, that creature is entitled to a Reflex save (calculated as normal for the original spell) in order to take only half damage. Each size category by which the spell's effect exceeds the creature's size adds 1 to the DC.
On a successful Reflex save, the creature is shifted to the nearest available free space. On a failed save, the falling creature or object automatically initiates a grapple (inanimate objects get their size bonus to the grapple, and may only attempt to pin).
Normal: Conjuration spells may only summon creatures or objects on surfaces that are capable of supporting them.

Hmm...How much damage do you take if an earth elemental falls on top of you?

I don't know about the balance for this, but this... this is just awesome.

Speaking of falling whales, would the summoned creatures take falling damage if summoned in the air and being incapable of flight?

EDIT: And I don't mean to derail the thread, but do summoned creatures that are not extraplanar actually die when slain? As awesome as this might be, think of the Druids that would fall because their summoning of the animal in the sky unwittingly killed aforementioned animal.

The summoned creature takes damage, yes - 1d6 per 10 feet, to a max of 20d6. This damage plus 1d6/200lbs of the object's weight is dealt to the target. So a Medium Earth Elemental (SMV) deals 3d6 damage plus the fall damage.

SNA creatures still reform after 24 hours if they're slain, just like SM creatures.

Called creatures actually die, on the other hand, and Gate happens to be Conjuration. A new and amusing way to use 9th level spells to kill your enemies. :)

Can we also summon petunias alongside our whales?

Wait, you have to summon your creatures on the ground in the first place?

In my group we've been dropping hydras and Paladin mounts on the enemies since access to summoning has existed!

"An environment that can support the creature", or something like that.

Technically still viable then, as long as they can breathe air.

Not quite. This passage was taken from the description of the conjuration school.

Which is RAW stupid for deep-water aquatic campaigns, but that is another matter entirely I guess.

Nice, of course, but it'd be helpful to add some hints for adjudicating the effects. Say, the Reflex save that would be required, whether said save is higher if you're summoning something larger (it's easier to dodge a falling monkey than a falling kraken), and maybe the weights of some common summoned creatures for easy cross-referencing with the falling damage chart

I was going to post a picture of the whale + petunias, but I couldn't find a good enough picture.

I really like this feat though, awesome.

Or just relate species directly to damage (for both the creature and the target(s)), so people don't have to use two different charts.

Isn't that in the rules already? *checks*

It's not. Odd. Added a line (DC as normal, +1 per size disadvantage).

Which got me thinking. What should happen after the fall, now that two creatures are sharing the space?

You could have the summoned whatever make an automatic grapple check to represent the target needing to get out from under it. Inanimate objects would just get their size bonus to the check (it's hard to get out from under a piano that's fallen on top of you, but much easier than getting out from under an angelic buffalo that's fallen on top of you).

Actually, this doesn't allow that. Now normally I wouldn't get picky, but since I made dropping ACTUAL piano's on people an option, I thought I should go ahead and point you to the appropriate thread. It also includes bricks, adamintine treasure chests, anvils, and viking longboats. It also has the small benefit of almost certainly being better balanced than this.

Anyway, here you go: Falling Anvil a martial discipline.

My first though was a whale falling in the air, naming it's tail, and asking what that thing was rushing towards it before it went splat...

Summon Instrument and a Large-sized bard with enough strength to hold a piano. Done.

And I don't mean to be harsh, but since you had two different Falling Anvil threads on the front page of Homebrew yesterday I don't think it's necessary to bring it up in an unrelated thread.

Didn't consider it in that light, and I probably should have only bumped one of the two threads. OTOH, I don't think everyone would have made the connection. Still, on balance, I probably should have resisted. Will make an edit to keep it for posterity.

EDIT: And since this is now "posterity" I have reversed the spoilerization.
