Arts and CraftsThe place to talk about stick figure avatars, graphic design, fan art, or any application of the visual arts and creative writing--or just to show off your latest masterwork!
Well, see Crimmy.... I like the pencil style, I think it looks good. Though, admittedly... The control L will be loads of help.... Okay, for this I'll try something simpler, and see to do what I can...
I reedited the yellow guy and put him as my avatar. Wait, Crimmy... If you don't use pencils, how do you make all the little lines on the avatars you make?
And, a newer one... Basicish? Right?

-The shoulderpads, unless Warhammer-like, should normally not juxtapose over the head.
-Consistent lines in general, but there's still some (like his right leg) which look like they have a thinner line width. Though, admittedly, that might be just my eyes.
-Rounded ends. Using rounded ends for the outlines works wonders. Things like fingertips and other corners will look significatively smoother.
-The boots are weirdly shaped. Maybe elongate them a bit to the sides, so they look less bulged.
-The eyes continue to be too large, but this time they might look larger because of the combination of beard and hair goingi nside the face's area.
-The beard could do with a little more work. Maybe a bit more spiky here and there?
-Gradients are not usually the best choice for shadowing. Try making shapes without outlines, changing their opacity to a level lower than... 50%? And making that shape gray or black, so when you put it over the avatar, it looks like a shadow.

Those avatars are not made in Inkscape. I have trascended it for the use of two incredibly good avataring programs:
MS Paint, and Paint Tool SAI.
The difference is that this kind of avataring doesn't allow much room for mistakes, because unlike vectors, if you erase, it's lost. With vectirs, you can simply move the line a bit, twist it and so on, without actually erasing.
Qwerty told me to come see this. I came to see it.
I now know what to sell my soul to the devil for: to have asdflove grade of artistic talent. Now to find me an Efreeti Bottle...
Now that isn't necessary. I got to this point with lots of practice.

I used the Bezier curve tool. Seriously. Anytime I draw hair I use that and draw it very roughly, then tweak it until I like how it looks. It's not really difficult...
This is a screen shot so it's very big, but you can see my nodes and the way I have it curved here.

My brother is learning how to use inkscape... He'll be showing up here with a very derpy picture soon.
@Mad: The Xyborg looks completely odd, but I can't really put my finger on what. Maybe the boots/shoes.
Theo ther one has a lot of inconsistent lines, and the eye-incinerating colors don't help a lot. I understand the idea is to show the madness, but those colors don't really make a difference with such brightness.

I think it may be the eyes.

Just tooling around bored and took note of this. I'm unfamiliar with that tool but I'm totally going to find it and practice with it now, because working up good hair has been nightmare.
Appreciate the advice.
And since I'm here, I'll drop in a few I've worked up over the last few months...

I like this one a lot for some reason. I can't really figure out what is happening on her torso though. Where are her hands?

Yeah I agree. The boobs just sorta... Float. Must have some riverine push up bras or something.

(Wow, it feels like eternities since I crawled my way into A&C the last time...)
Anyway, I've somehow been hooked up on a project to steampunk a real steam engine for a steampunk festival next summer, and to highlight the ongoing design competition, I made myself a new avatar drawn on top of a blueprint of the engine. Now, even if I tried to keep it simple, most of the details were too small for the 120x120 format (I'm an engineer, accordance to scale is a must), so I thought I may as well showcase the large version to anyone interested:
Spoiler
Okay, I wasn't entirely truthful up there, the spanner isn't entirely to scale. A reduction by 33% would probably be a bit more accurate.
