Re: Thanksgiving in the Playground ["Why does everything taste better with gravy?"]
- What are you doing for Turkey day?
Traveling to Sweden for my grandmothers birthday this weekend.
- What are you eating for dinner?
Don't know. Will be travelling for most of the day, and will only be at my parent's place at about 11 at night, so possibly just a sandwich or something.
- Can I have some?
No, it's mine!
- Please?
No! Get your own!
- Do you like peas in your mashed potatos?
No. not really a fan of peas overall, so mixing them in my mash is not an option.
- Pumpkin or Apple pie?
Never tried Pumpkin pie, so I'm going to have to go for Apple.
- You must be getting tired of these questions...
Nah, I don't have anything else to do anyway.
- Will the Turkey uprising be successful on that day?
Not a chance. We will quash their pathetic attempt at a revolution, and we will eat their casualties, as a show of force and of our contempt for their paltry attempt at rising up against us.

Re: Thanksgiving in the Playground ["Why does everything taste better with gravy?"]
- Staying home.
- Turkey, mashed potatoes, the usual.
- No.
- ...Fine. You can buy my piece of turkey for five dollars.
- No. I like butter and gravy.
- Pumpkin. We never have apple. Plus, pumpkin pie + whipped cream = way better than apple.
- Mayyybe.
- Nah. I'm heading over to a friend's to help fortify their place after we're done boarding up our windows, they've got shotguns. I have a half-decent head for tactics and my friend's something of a military nut. We tried smokes last year, they just flew over it, so now we're going to go with flashbangs.

Cooking for my two neighbors.
...Oh so very much. Turkey, ham, stuffing, potatoes, gravy, sweet potatoes, green beans, two kinds of bread, pie, cheesecake, and that's all after the mushroom tarts, cheese, crackers, and chutney appetizers!
Sure, way more than enough to go around!
I already said yes!
...No. Mashed potatoes must be kept pure!
Pumpkin.
Eh.
All your turkeys are belong to me.

Re: Thanksgiving in the Playground ["Why does everything taste better with gravy?"]
Was just taking a break from making a grocery shopping list It's my favorite holiday.
What are you doing for Turkey day?
Going to my parents' house.
What are you eating for dinner?
Turkey, cornbread stuffing, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, butternut squash, Brussels sprouts, peas, Parker House rolls, carrots, parsnips, cranberry sauce.
Can I have some?
Yes, we're going to have a lot of leftovers. We make three pies no matter how many people will be there, and this year there are only six of us.
Do you like peas in your mashed potatos?
First, you do a sort of sideways swipe of your fork into the mashed potatoes, so that the back of the fork has mashed potato on it. Then you squash the potatoey fork into your peas, so that the peas stick to it. Then you dunk the bite into the gravy volcano (you made a gravy volcano in the mashed potatoes, right? right!). Then you eat it.
Pumpkin or Apple pie?
Apple is my favorite, but we make both, and also pecan pie. Pie crust is my nemesis, though I am an excellent baker but pie crust is the one thing I can't consistently get right. Probably because I only make it once a year and that once-a-year attempt is in the middle of doing a ton of other stuff so I can't focus on it properly.
You must be getting tired of these questions...
Not really, but it's making me hungry! Just realized it's after 11PM and I haven't had dinner.
Will the Turkey uprising be successful on that day?
This is giving me flashbacks to that class I took on the history of the Ottoman empire in order to fulfill some obscure requirement at my university...Last edited by SarahV; 2012-11-19 at 11:16 PM.

Re: Thanksgiving in the Playground ["Why does everything taste better with gravy?"]
What are you doing for Turkey day?
Grandma's house for lunch with mom's side of the family, Dad's house for dinner with his. First should be somewhat fun. The second will probably just be awkward.
What are you eating for dinner?
Dinner isn't the good mean on turkey day, lunch is. And it'll probably include ham, turkey, mac n cheese, green beans, oyster pie, stuffing and dressing, broccoli cassarole, sweet potato pie, mashed potatos, and pumpkin and pecan pie for dessert.
Can I have some?
...Probably, if you can find it! MWA HA HA HA HA!!!
Please?
Alright fine. but don't say I never did anything for you.
Do you like peas in your mashed potatos?
Peas are not good.
Pumpkin or Apple pie?
Pecan. If I have to choose between pumpkin and apple, pumpkin wins.
You must be getting tired of these questions...
Eh, I'm bored and have nothing to do.
Will the Turkey uprising be successful on that day?
Never. All their leaders have been killed. Where do you think we get all the turkeys?Avatar by Lycunadari

Re: Thanksgiving in the Playground ["Why does everything taste better with gravy?"]
I'm going to my girlfriend's place for Thanksgiving. As a foreigner in the US away from my family I've learned to celebrate this holiday and I quite like it, actually. This is my second one so far.

Re: Thanksgiving in the Playground ["Why does everything taste better with gravy?"]
[QUOTE=Arcanist;14243745]Yep, it's that time again...
What are you doing for Turkey day?
You mean what I *did*. The extended family has gotten large enough that we've started having it on the weekend before (Sunday this year). Thursday we'll have a sort of "Thanksgiving breakfast" with a much smaller group.
What are you eating for dinner?
The usuals, plus some family specific traditions. The bacon-fried rice was a big hit as always, but the Reece's Pie was sorely missed (the uncle who makes it couldn't attend). A popular new arrival this year was the berry pizza. One new thing tried this year was that the cousin who did the turkey put the white & dark meat in seperate containers with seperate dripping mixes. It was an interesting change but probably not as big a deal as the work that went into it.
Can I have some?
As much stuffing as was left over, there probably is some still available I will never figure out why everyone always makes so much of it every year.
Do you like peas in your mashed potatos?
I'm one of those "one taste" people. When I want peas, I'll eat peas. When I want mashed potatoes (read: when I am hungry) I'll eat mashed potatoes.
Pumpkin or Apple pie?
Yes Ever eat an apple pie made with pumpkin pie spice? Tastes better than it might sound.
You must be getting tired of these questions...
Did you catch MythBuster's this weekend? That whole turkey = tired thing is overstated...
Will the Turkey uprising be successful on that day?
If I were better at posting images \ Google-fu, I'd post that old Marvel comic strip about Turkey Day and joke about how the turkeys won a long time ago...Last edited by TheEmerged; 2012-11-20 at 09:28 AM.

Re: Thanksgiving in the Playground ["Why does everything taste better with gravy?"]
- What are you doing for Turkey day?
Surprisingly for my people, I will be celebrating it! Thanksgiving isn't a thing in Ireland, so I never did, until I started going out with my partner, who is American! So the last few years we've had Thanksgiving dinner, including once with his family who were over to visit.
- What are you eating for dinner?
We'll be having roast chicken (turkeys aren't common except at Christmas and besides, our oven is small!), roast potatoes, mashed potatoes, unspecified vegetables (it's a pre-determined pot luck), cornbread, American biscuits stuffed with cheese, American butter bread rolls, corn on the cob, mac and cheese and salad. Then we're having apple pie, icecream and monkey bread for dessert. Plus white wine and lemonade with all that.
- Can I have some?
I doubt it, it's in Ireland.
- Please?
Okay, but you pay for your own flights and/or shipping and if you come, you have to bring something for the potluck!
- Do you like peas in your mashed potatos?
Um, no. Mashed potatoes are one of my top five kinds of potatoes (the others are roast potatoes, chipper chips (or fries, for you North American types), potato gratin and waxy new boiled potatoes) and I'd much rather have the peas on the side.
- Pumpkin or Apple pie?
Apple. We did pumpkin last year (Which was hard! Sourcing pumpkin in November in Ireland is tricky!) and apple is way better.
- You must be getting tired of these questions...
I like answering questions!
- Will the Turkey uprising be successful on that day?
Pfft, no. They have nothing to fear in Ireland in November. They'll be planning their Christmas defense.

Re: Thanksgiving in the Playground ["Why does everything taste better with gravy?"]
- Past tense for me... Thanksgiving was 6 weeks ago. We spent it with family.
- Turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce, veggies, etc
- Nope... it has long been digested and flushed
- Read above... That's gross
- Nothing but butter and gravy with the potatoes
- Pumpkin 100 times over apple
- Nah
- They tried...

Re: Thanksgiving in the Playground ["Why does everything taste better with gravy?"]
Staying home, playing computer games, no human contact (snuggling my doggie, though ), and probably finishing my paper that's due Friday (and, yes, I do live in the US).
Homemade gumbo
Yep, I'm making a whole pot! Hope you like spicy food, though
Ewwwww Peas should never be cooked, and potatoes should never be mashed.
Sweet potato pie. Tastes similar to potato pie, but it's denser and more flavorful.

Re: Thanksgiving in the Playground ["Why does everything taste better with gravy?"]
What are you doing for Turkey day?
Hanging out in Santa Fe with my parents and an honorary uncle. We're fleeing relatives.
What are you eating for dinner?
Probably some turkey thing, bleu cheese mashed potatoes, whatever else we get around to making. It's pretty low stress this year.
Can I have some?
If you bring pie, sure.
Do you like peas in your mashed potatos?
They don't go well with bleu cheese.
Pumpkin or Apple pie?
Probably an apple crisp, actually.
You must be getting tired of these questions...
Neh.
Will the Turkey uprising be successful on that day?
Doubtful, unless they figure out how not to drown in rainstorms from looking up with their beaks open. [Protip: Don't look up with your beak open]. See, they can't read, so this is safe.Guess who's good at avatars? Thormag. That's who.

Re: Thanksgiving in the Playground ["Why does everything taste better with gravy?"]
What are you doing for Turkey day? Staying home and hanging around having fun with my family (probably playing D&D), eating dinner with said family members who I live with. The day after we'll go to my oma and opa's house.
What are you eating for dinner? Turkey, rolls, green beans, cranberry sauce, stuffing, pumpkin pie, maybe something else. Not completely sure, really; I'm not making the food, I just saw the shopping list. Oh, and wine. I know there's wine.
Can I have some? No, we don't usually make enough for extra people.
Please? No.
Do you like peas in your mashed potatos? Not really. I prefer corn with mashed potatos and peas with rice. I do like peas, though, and potatos... so to some extent at least.
Pumpkin or Apple pie? I honestly prefer apple pie, but we usually have pumpkin pie. It's good too.
You must be getting tired of these questions... Nah. Well, maybe.
Will the Turkey uprising be successful on that day? I seriously doubt that they are smart enough to pull off any organised rebellion. Therefore it shall be swiftly crushed, doomed to not even make history.

I am loving the responses so far. I'm sorry that some of you can't have a wonderful Thanksgiving If I could I would have invited some of you on down to my place for a feast so dang good that you'd swear that you died and gone to the Seven Heavens!

Re: Thanksgiving in the Playground ["Why does everything taste better with gravy?"]
In the mountains with my family. They finally got wireless Internet.
Today has 6 steps: Watch parade and dog show. Play Scrabble with my grandfather. Around 3 pm, the festival of overeating begins. Then a game of drunken Catchphrase. Then cleaning. Then, finally, the first Christmas movie of the season will be watched, the 1984 George C. Scott version of A Christmas Carol.

Going to my grandmother's house with a large chunk of family. - What are you eating for dinner?
Turkey, mashed potatoes, and as many candied yams as I can stuff into my face. - Can I have some?
Apparently you can if you make sad faces at my aunt. - Please?
No. - Do you like peas in your mashed potatos?
- Pumpkin or Apple pie?
Apple cinnamon- omnomnom - You must be getting tired of these questions...
I got tired of these questions exactly one question ago. - Will the Turkey uprising be successful on that day?
I would say they don't have much of a chance. Although they have a viable plan and a HUGE stockpile of arms, the fact remains that they are small, that many have already been killed and frozen, and that they panic every time a hawk flies over (although if a hawk tried to grab one, they could stomp it into the dirt...)

Re: Thanksgiving in the Playground ["Why does everything taste better with gravy?"]
Girlfriend out of town seeing family. I would have gone, but I've got a film score due 12/11. So I've been in the studio most of the day working. For dinner I had meatloaf and a salad. You can have some if you'd like; it came out pretty good (and there's enough for the next couple days). Don't like peas in the potatoes, like a proper apple pie (with cheese and good New York apples). Not tired of the questions, because there aren't that many, though my answers aren't that interesting. I'm pretty sure we're safe from the turkeys. Actually, I'm not a very picky eater, but chicken I dislike, so we eat a lot of turkey year round. So it's not so much an "event meal" for me.
There has also been a fair amount of Jameson and beer (currently an Old Rasputin Imperial Stout). I like not going to my day job
