So, I was talking bands with my friend. And I was talking about the Used. Friend asked what genre they were, and I realize that's often a poor descriptor, but I no idea. Suggestions?

The Used? Personally, I'd say post-hardcore. post-hardcore is a VERY broad, rather popular genre though...

Edit: First proper concert in Montreal last Thursday. Mostly hardcore punk.
Vile Intent, who probably would have been better had a faulty patch cord not meant that every time their guitarist wasn't playing something, there was a squeal of impossible-to-eliminate feedback.
Then Thee Nodes, who were AMAZING. Drummer in only boxers and a silk stocking over his head, singer a man possessed, dressed first in a suit, but then he threw his jacket off so he was in a tie and dress shirt. Oh, also he had what appeared to be a white shirt wrapped around his head so he looked like a mummy wrapped in bandages. He was INSANE. Jump-kicking audience members in the chest, jumping and spinning into a splits, almost jumping onto the balcony, crawling gollum-style through the audience... loved it!
Then Salvation, who were just straight-up solid. Not very spectacular, but well-crafted and actually interesting hardcore punk. Also, the girl who's number I got at the show was there because one of her friends from back home was in the band, so yay.
Lastly, Ceremony, who I've seen once before. In the smaller space this time, they were much more hardcore than when I saw them before. They played about half-and-half of their new more post-hardcore stuff and their old proper hardcore stuff, so a good balance I think.
    t'was a good show.

Basically, they're REM + MGMT + Flaming Lips, and in all the right ways. They're catchy and interesting, and have their entire album on their own YouTube channel. :P

Nick Cave is one of my top three living songwriters, along with Tom Waits and John Darnielle.

I'm definitely with you on Waits (and even more specifically Waits and Brennan). Cave I'm more hit or miss with (loved The Birthday Party). I've always wanted to like him more than I actually do, but songs like "Straight To You" are tough to argue with! But in a sort of similar vein, Stuart Staples of tindersticks would definitely make my short list of favorite songwriters.

But even that short list would be way too long. There's tons of awesome music out there!

New Godspeed You! Black Emperor out this month! First in 10 years! Their last wasn't their best, but they still rocked it live. I haven't seen any of the post-hiatus shows yet, but I've heard they're still just as good. Can't wait to hear the new record.

And just two months after a new Swans! All we need is Oingo Boingo to get back together for a studio album (Danny Elfman won't play live anymore due to hearing loss), and I will be as happy as can be!

Been listening to a good bit of folk this and that of a few different varieties. Ben Harper, Mumford and Sons, Carbon Leaf. Found a new independent artist, Roy Norvell-Graham, who just put out Soul's Estate which is his first album as far as I know, and it's great, especially Foundation of Failure.

Avoid it. I am not exactly a fan of Muse, but this is far from their best work. Alarm bells started ringing once their first single hit, and from what I've heard of their actual album things are not better. Also, it seems that in light of the (entirely accurate) comments that Survival was blatantly aping Queen, they have decided the best way to counter this was to try their hand at dubstep.

I'd say the most (and maybe) only worthwhile song on the album is Madness. But yes, definitely their weakest essay yet, by a massive amount. They seemed to have transitioned from OK Computer era Radiohead-esque music to full on channeling (or aping, depending on how generous you want to be) Queen.

At the heart of all beauty lies something inhuman, and these hills, the softness of the sky, the outline of the trees at this very minute lose the illusory meaning with which we clothed them, henceforth more remote than a lost paradise.

No music updates for nearly two weeks? I'm aghast.

Here are a couple oldies I rediscovered:

Prisoners of Technology: The Blair Witch

Cutty Ranks: Duck a dill dill dill

Now if one of you can find the set where both of these songs are mixed together (with other songs) then I will pay you.

Oldies? Boy, do I feel old now.

    Those are oldies:
Omega - A varázslatos fehér kő, Ezüst eső (you probably know them for this)
Mel Torme - Comin' Home Baby
    Murray Head - Boats away
Sisters of Mercy - Dominion (sooo 80's )
The Knights of Oingo Bongo - Stay, It's a Dead Man's Party, Just another day, Only a Lad (if you didn't know them, then you are missing out on Danny Elfman singing - something, that probably won't happen anymore)
The Doobie Brothers - Long Train Running
Mungo Jerry - In the summertime

Well, I suppose I could have emphasized the relativity of "oldie". The first is nearly twenty years old and I'm certain the second is over. I'd just as readily lump something like Caught Up in You by 38 special an oldie as I would Slam by Onyx. Speaking of which, I haven't heard Slam in a while. Here you go.

Pentatonix is coming out with a Christmas album just in time for my birthday, and they already released one song to get their fans excited and boy did it ever work (it's the video at the bottom. You probably already figured that out, but I felt like explaining it anyway).

Seriously, I have that page bookmarked as "instant happiness button." Any other Pentaholix on the playground who are excited as I am?

Crazy is too tame a word to describe, what I have just seen. I wish there was more of it.

Anyway, probably all people know this song thanks to The Muppet Show, but few people know that Piero Umiliani was the original composer.
