You have to get used to gathering supplies (for repairing/etc).
Also, plan how you want to build (although this isn't easy as what Perks you get access to can be random). Also, the best legendaries you can find are random.
Well, I played fallout 4, and I liked the system there, I'm used to gathering supplies, I've planned how I'm going to build, I've made myself not dependent on Legendaries because I know they are random.

    But these systems are bad!

Carry weight has been reduced, and junk has been made less useful to the point where I can't do anything but go on loot runs. I have to ditch my weapons every five levels, and when I do I destroy my junk supplies. now, whenever I want to use a weapon, I have to hit twenty of it with a hammer until it can even be used. I find myself using pipe weaponry over energy weapons. Pipe weaponry! What is even the point in planning a build? I'm not going to get the perks I need to be a specialist, so I guess i'll just be a generalist then. I might want to use shotguns, but if I don't have a shotgun perk, I have to take one for say, rifles, because I need plus 10% damage, because all the enemies do nothing but soak up bullets! And legendaries? If I get, lets say a ghoul-slayers Golf club, that sure will be useful if I'm fighting ghouls, In the meantime it's laying in my Stash box, eating up weight that I need for aluminium, screws, adhesive, nuclear material, and half a dozen other things that I need a constant supply of, becuase every five levels I need a new sniper rifle!

It's not completely worthless to play, but... I just can't help feeling disappointed.

    You like the system?

I hated the Civ lite bases.

I keep forgetting how to fire the lazer muskets, and it's not in the keybinding menu to remind me.

I don't think that mother deathclaws are any fuzzier than other deathclaws.

I'm not that impressed with the power armour, it's nice but it eats fuel much too fast.

It's very pretty, but I'd rather be playing New Vegas, not that I've got to the end of either.

Well I liked it better than Fallout 76's system. That is all I will say about it.

I think there's a reason why New Vegas, a game over 8 years old, gets more discussion in this thread than any of the more recent games.

It's just better. Simple as that.

No game is as good as New Vegas. Not even Good Game Johnson. And they call him that 'cause he has a really good game.

    1. Str is reduced. It used to give +10 carry, now it gives +5.

    2. Junk is amazing as it lets you make/repair stuff.

    3. As if, sometimes you have lower lv weapons because you haven't found better.
Breaking stuff down gives you a chance to get plans its mods, but only do it with extras.

And yes, you will get legendary stuff that you just sell.

In my stash is Daisycutter (MIRV), I keep it there because then I'd have to carry mini nukes, I saves for bosses.

Most of my weapons are below my lv, but they have an awesome legendary (or haven't found level equivalent)
-Tesla rifle (nice area damage since it arcs)
-Voice of set (it is always lv equivalent)
    -Combat Shotgun (I fully upgraded)
    -50 cal Machinegun
    -Gatling Plasma

Nice, I started a new character and I'm using A Hunting rifle (I got lucky and managed to kit it out early on), a pipe revolver, a pump action shotgun, a fire-axe, and throwing knives.

My current character uses a .50 cal, a minigun, a .308 machine gun, a vampiric pump shotgun, Voice of Set, Vampiric cultist dagger, a 10mm smg, and that legendary super sledge you get from Watoga.

I will say this for it - customizing my weapons did feel fun, it just takes so much time to get anything worthwhile, what with all the scrapping and looting I had to go through.

So... would there be any interest in watching me stream Fallout: New Vegas on Twitch? I'm tempted to try actual streaming now that I have a proper condenser mike and stuff.

I can't promise how available I'd be, but I'd certainly be interested.

Speaking of streaming and recording, I'm basically one bugfix and an intro script from being able to start my New Vegas LP. It's kind of a heady feeling. Now if I could just track down which of a hundred plugins is causing traveling merchants to occasionally spawn without armor, I could begin.

I'm away from my PC, and therefore can't quite post with 100% certainty the modlist and load order, but I started with the Fear and Loathing in New Vegas modlist and added a few personal favorites. At a guess, I'm thinking it's probably something to do with AWOP. I'll update you with the list when I get home from work tonight.

Don't forget NVSE, without which most of the other mods won't work. Also, word of warning: stutter remover can lead to crashes on some machines (I think it's Windows 10), so watch out for that.

    There's a windows 10 version of NVSR.

@Balmas: Your armor issue is going to be Adam Reborn fighting with any other clothing mods, because it absolutely refuses to play well with others. It's one of the reasons I dislike it.

I personally recommend just playing vanilla and only downloading mods for things you specifically want to change. At least at first. The rabbit hole is too deep otherwise. Stability issues with New Vegas are greatly overblown. I've got 200 hours in the game and I can count the number of times I've crashed on one hand.

    You're one incredibly lucky person.

Ooh, also, Zan's Auto-purge. Tiny little background mod that quietly runs the Purge Cell Buffers command. Keeps NV from deciding to topple over like a badly made statue.

I also had zero issues with New Vegas crashing until I added mods.

I forget which set it was between the memory purge, anti-stutter, and anti-crash, but I needed two and the third one made problems worse.
I can't remember ever crashing during normal play, but it happened all the time during loading\transitions. Unfortunately your loading at practically every other door you go through.... Save often and expect it to not crash just long enough to make you forget. I could find no consistency to it, sometimes it was constantly, sometimes rarely.

Yeah, if you're on Windows 10, there's a special version of the Stutter Remover.

Okay, so no mods for me. I must say I am quite surprised :)

Why would you be surprised? And why no mods?

So... I kinda did a 'thing'. A kind of a bad thing. A kind of a 'corrupt everything and wipe it down to bedrock and start over' kind of thing.

Since I did the thing, I figured I might as well try something new to get this done right. This is only necessary because I run Linux, and I want a heavily modded instance of F:NV on Linux. If this does not apply to you, feel free to disregard much of this post.

First off, I'm running Fallout: New Vegas itself through Steam via Proton. which is no kind of problem at all. Except a lot of the things I really want to do are going to require a mod manager, and none of the mod managers are very Linux friendly. But just recall... this is the Steam version of F:NV run natively through the Steam client, not through WINE. This is going to be important later.

Second off, I am installing FOMM through a 32 bit WINE bottle. Why 32 bit? Because FOMM won't run in 64 bit WINE because of .NET dependencies. Actually, it's a bit more involved than that, because I can GET .NET 4.0 on 64 bit WINE to work. The problem is that WINE is EITHER 32 bit OR 64 bit, it can't recognize a 32 bit application in 64 bit WINE for some reason, and FOMM is a 32 bit application.

However, I don't want to actually RUN F:NV in 32 bit, because I really want fun things like Large Address Aware and stuff right out of the box. Which is why the game itself is installed through Steam in a natively 64 bit manner.

The gist is... even though I'm running F:NV through Steam and using Proton to do so, I'm adding modds via FOMM into the installation of F:NV in the .../steam/steamapps/common/Fallout New Vegas folder.

And the whole reason why ALL of this is necessary (again)? Darnified UI. I tried adding it. And I screwed it up. And screwed EVERYTHING up. Which makes me a sad panda.

Usually heavy modding is recommended for Bethsoft games (yeah I know it's Obsidian work but it is still the same buggy engine).

Alas, I started as a "steal everything and shoot everyone" kinda guy. After my massacre at the NCRCF was when I realized the Powder Gangers are an actual legitimate faction in NV and not just the "bandits" of the game. To be fair, they are called "powder bandits" in german, same bandits as in Oblivion. Found it weird they didnt attack me on sight like normal mobs do but thought this was due to my disguise.

After a few hours, I got annoyed that I ruined potential quests and started anew with a science/lockpick/barter guy. Works like a charm, I activated E-DE who does the majority of combat for me while I shoot a bit too but honestly most of it is just recreational as the robot can do everything on its own anyhow.

Not for someone going in blind it isn't. You don't even know what parts of the game you need to mod or not. It's not like the bugs are universal enough to predict which ones you'll have and need to mod out, and modding can also make things a lot more unstable. If you're playing and find something you need/want to change, that's when I'd recommend going for a mod. Or to spice things up when you get bored of the base game.
