Re: FIFA 2010 World Cup
Clearly the Spanish won in the end through DM fiat. (How else could that NPC octopus have predicted all games correctly?)

Re: FIFA 2010 World Cup
Turns out that the referee doesn't have to look up the offside rule at all, as replays have showed that the first pass, that never reached the intended recipient, wasn't offsides at all.
The linesman, who is responsible for calling the offsides, had a perfect view and made the right call letting it go.
Personally, I'm just happy that the World Cup is finished, so that you'll hear about something else instead.

Re: FIFA 2010 World Cup
Congratulations to Spain! I confess that I was pulling for the Netherlands in this game, but I thought the Spanish were the better team on the day, if not by a lot. Congratulations again to them!

Re: FIFA 2010 World Cup
But he was in an offsides position during the play... and his player had touched the ball. And he was involved in the action.
From what I am seeing, the linesman *did* call the offsides initially. Be interesting to see how it turns out.
Video replay or not, though, I do not think it would have mattered. The tentacled master had issued his directives.

Re: FIFA 2010 World Cup
The offsides rule says thatthe player has to be in an offsides position at the moment the pass is made and he has to be involved in the play. Only one of those applied in the case of the first pass, as he was not offsides.
The right call was made as the play was allowed to continue.

Re: FIFA 2010 World Cup
The only two passes that culd have had any offisdes implication were both to Iniesta, who scored the goal. The first pass towards him was brken up by a Dutch defender, and as that pass was made, Iniesta, who would then be the only player being able to be called for offsides as the pass was struck towards him, was NOT offisides. To be offsides, the player needs to be behind the last defender, and he was in line with the defender, which makes him onside.
The ball then made its way back to the Spaniards posession, and another pass was made towards Iniesta, who again was onside, and that's when he scored the goal.
It was the right call. He was onside. Goal was good.
Edit: Found a video clip of the goal. First pass I mentioned is at 2 seconds of the clip. Iniesta is onsides at that pass before it gets broken up by the Dutch defender. They then stop the tape to show that the second pass is good as well as he's clearly onsides then as well.
Edit #2: @Maelstrom: From the video clip it's also clear that the linesman never raised his flag to rule offsides. His flag stays down the entire time.

Re: FIFA 2010 World Cup
Hurrah for Spain!
As for the goal, Iniesta was right on the cusp of offside before the *first* pass- that never reached him and was never intended for him- was made, although only debatably actually offside, and well onside for the second. The Dutch can have no real complaints there.
Especially if we're to overlook the horror karate kick on Xabi Alonso by de Jong that should have seen him straight-red-carded in the first half.
I might be slightly biased, but it seemed to me that the Dutch plan was to shut down the Spanish game by any means necessary, which resulted in a horrible number of fouls in the first half in particular. In terms of actually playing football, rather than WWF wrestling, in normal time the Dutch created better chances, but bottled them, while Spain created more (and bottled them too). 0-0 at full-time was a fair result. In extra time, Spain ran away with it. Justice was done.
For those who complain that Spain don't score many goals, it's true, and the major grievance I've held with them for the last four years or so. But they tend to make the goals they do score count.
Klose_the_Sith: If you seriously want to argue that Klose is a better World Cup player than Pele, Ronaldo, Maradona, Cruyff and so forth, then good luck to you, but I can't be bothered to argue over something that, at the end of the day, is pretty subjective. I stand by my original statement that he's a good player but not a great one, and I believe his overall inferiority to Muller, Pele, Fontaine and Ronaldo to be demonstrable, but if you want to continue believing otherwise, that's up to you.Last edited by Aedilred; 2010-07-11 at 05:07 PM.

Re: FIFA 2010 World Cup
So I started watching after the first half, so I have no idea what happend there.
All I've gotta say is that the dutch offense was way too slow, so the spanish defense could easily form. And as for the spanish...
Grongratulations on scoring your first goal on what must've beenthe hundredh goal attempt.
The Netherlands really could've played better, but that was most of the world chamionship....Then again, they played really not in their usual style this match.

Re: FIFA 2010 World Cup
I really dunno about you guys looking slow, Robben exposed enough gaps in the Spanish lines to drive an ocean liner through ... it's just that he didn't manage to finish a pair of chances that probably should have been goals.
Especially when he truly had the keeper to himself. Just ... wow.

Re: FIFA 2010 World Cup
I hate you.
Honestly, its really kinda annoying, to me, how I hate Spain's entire playstyle, yet it appears to be the exact kind of playstyle that was needed to win this World Cup. That, that depresses me. Its also probably the primary reason why I've never gotten into soccer. I find that soccer is really boring and is more about scoring that one, perfect goal, instead of scoring a lot of little goals that add up to a perfect win like so many other sports.
Oh well, there is always the next world cup.

Re: FIFA 2010 World Cup
That's exactly what I like about soccer. Neither side scores a whole lot, so it can go either way right up to the end. There's no letting one or two attempts to score go through because you can catch up later, so the defense has to be a lot stronger.
But wow, the Dutch were fouling left and right that game. Did any of their players besides the goalie walk off the field without at least one?

Re: FIFA 2010 World Cup
It is extremely close. He crosses the line pretty much as the bass was kicked. Seeing as it seems the whole world is against me, I will concede and say good play. However, it is not as clear cut as everyone seems to think. A few inches forward and he would have been called, which is why I believed it to be offsides.

Re: FIFA 2010 World Cup
I, on the other hand, am suffering World Cup withdrawal symptoms already. I can't believe there will be no football this week. At the match time of 4 am I'll probably be sleeping(!) - how perverse and unnatural is that?? I might have a nervous breakdown soon if I don't hear a vuvuzela.
