My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic is a reboot of the MLP franchise by Powerpuff Girls artist Lauren Faust, currently viewed by (almost) the entire Internet, not only the intended audience. Here is a place where we discuss the joy of friendship.

It's a clever show. It has excellent writing, character dynamics, humor, animation, and generally treats kids seriously rather than condescending to them. It has every right to be a 20 minute corporate committee designed infomercial, but it's not.

Pixar technically makes shows for little boys, and produce some of the best animation in the world.

> Okay, fine. I'll give it a try. Where do I start?

No Brony could ask for more. I recommend watching the episodes in order. They're all up on Youtube. Unusually, Hasbro seems fine with having the entire series up in public because they've made no move to bring down any of the episodes. Search for "Friendship is Magic Episode 1" and you should find the series pretty easily... Or search for "Sharing is Magic" Google Doc. That is all.

Whoa, calm down there. The show is light hearted, optimistic fun but it's not for everyone. It's good fun, the community is good fun, and everyone can do with a reminder that friendship is magic but if it doesn't gel for you we'll love and tolerate you anyway. Plus, you might hit the wrong episode. Ask first?

All in good fun! If it's not your cup of tea, skim it, but this show has triggered a great creative outpouring from the Internet. Pony themed fan-art is abundant and often excellent. See below for some examples.

> Derpy Hooves/Doctor Whoof

Two minor background characters who were adopted as emblems of 4chan. Derpy Hooves is so named due to an animation error in the first episode that had her eyes facing in different directions; 4chan has assigned her the role of Ponyville's mailpony, and her only line so far has been "Muffins". The show's animators are aware of Derpy's popularity and she's shown up a few times recently with her eyes obviously derped. Currently made canon in Feeling Pinkie Keen and in Faust's picture showcased below, Derpy was deemed important enough to appear in storyboards for Season II.

Dr. Whoof is a pony with an hourglass cutie mark; he and his kin save time and space very quietly off camera.

Well, Deadly's here to help you get rid of them... with a vengeance! Create a new bookmark in your browser and copy the code below as the link/url of said bookmark. Name it something helpful, like "Spoilers B GONE!" or whatever. Then whenever you view a thread here on GitP you just hit the bookmark and BAM! no more spoilers.

You won't even see the boxes, just the bare innards in all their gory glory.

It also makes sure that no image is wider than 600px, to avoid stretching pages, and will attempt to "intelligently" remove repeated images except avatars. Neat, huh? Sadly that last part means stuff like pony emotes may get lost but the forum doesn't make it easy for me to single out images in quotes as I'd have liked... that's an open problem, I guess.

Tested in Firefox, Chrome and Opera. Should work in any modern browser, but you never know with these things.

How has each of the Mane 6 (especially Twilight) grown in character throughout the series so far? Provide examples whenever possible.

This question is too broad. A full answer with examples would be an extensive essay.

I'm going to take the low-hanging fruit and point out Twilight's evolution in dealing with freaking herself out. We have Lesson Zero, where Twilight's focus on her strict deadline caused her to collapse completely and go nuts, messing up most of the town and turning herself into a total wreck. Then we have It's About Time, where Twilight freaks herself out but tries several solutions to the problem, reacting in a generally positive way, but still going overboard, a lesson which she learns at the end. Then we have Magical Mystery Cure, where the problem is easier for Twilight (because it's her friends she messed up, not herself) but where she despairs for only a short while and doesn't worry about the fact that she messed up or what consequences will befall her, instead focusing on solving the problem and trying her solution out empirically. We also saw her pick up the calming technique from Cadance in Games Ponies Play, and that episode showed Rainbow Dash freaking out in her place because she remained calm as things kept going wrong.

That's a pretty big task. I can say though that outside Twilight (I mean, wings and all, show's about her, come on), Fluttershy is probably the one with the most development. She went from unbearably annoying in Dragonshy to 5.0+ wingpower. From afraid of dragons to befriending an immortal chaotic spirit.

I would think Rarity has the least. I think the main lesson she's learned throughout the show is in Sisterhoove Social, and there hasn't really been a chance for her to show what she learned elsewhere. In Sleepless in Ponyville, there wasn't much interaction between her and Sweetie Bell, and what we mainly saw was Sweetie being a mule (that's at least a pun inside a reference). So, really, she didn't learn a thing if she's still treating her like that.

Arguably, I'd say Applejack grown the least. The AJ we saw in S1 is the same we saw in S3. Her one character development episode was Applebuck Season, and it ground to a stop right there. (You can say Fall Weather Friends was also an AJ episode but technically Dash was the one provoking her. AJ on the other hand, only resorted to underhanded tactics after Dash took it a mite far.)

As for most character development? Twilight would be the natural candidate. She gone from anti-social bookworm to a outgoing, if a little OCD, leader. Hell, the entire Season 1 and part of Season 3 was about her character development.

Every so often, an eight year old boy and girl neighbouring me come by my house. The girl loves colouring in ponies and loves my art, so I'm always giving her art lessons, often by picking out some pony lineart and showing her how to use SAI to colour it. Here's an example from today:

"Malcom loves it," she said, referring to her brother. "He's watched it a hundred times. He keeps asking me if I want to watch it with him again and I say no. He doesn't want to give it back."

Magical Mystery Cure is also a good counterpoint to Return of Harmony. In Return of Harmony, Twilight was so in dispair of what had happened to her friends and her inability to change them back that she ended up giving up on herself. A pretty similar thing happens in Magical Mystery Cure, but while Twilight goes through a bit of depression there as well, she does pull herself back up and motivate herself.

I hate camping. You better believe if my little sister guilted me into going camping I'd make her do most of the work.



Rarity develops, after a fashion, in Green Isn't Your Color, Best Night Ever, Sisterhooves Social and most particularly Sweet and Elite. Arguably Suited for Success, too. She's always been fairly reliable, resourceful and courageous in a crisis, so it might look like she hasn't been doing much in contrast to Fluttershy, who gradually needs to be pushed less and less to rise up to the challenge. I'm not sure the writers know all that well what to do with her right now, hence the lack of a Rarity episode in season three. They tend to play up her flaws for comedic effect a lot of the time, and rarely shine a light on her positive qualities. It's a bit of a shame.

While I agree that Twilight has gotten better, Magical Mystery Cure's setup is different from the others, making it a less than optimal comparison point. To elaborate, MMC is only one where Twilight's first plan worked flawlessly. I'd say that her plans of finding a friendship problem or disaster-proofing Equestria were on par with the one in MMC, and it was only after those failed that she started going nuts. MMC didn't back her into a corner like the other two did.

This begs the question of why her plans failed in Lesson Zero and It's About Time, while her plan succeeded in Magical Mystery Cure. The answer to this question can be found in the content and subtext of the plans themselves. That is, her first plan succeeded in Magical Mystery Cure because it was fundamentally different, both in goal and execution, from her plans in Lesson Zero and It's About Time.

All three plans were meant to resolve a problem Twilight perceived. In each case, she's kind enough to share what she believes to be her problems with us. In Lesson Zero, she was concerned that she was "supposed to send Princess Celestia a letter every week, telling her about a lesson I've learned about friendship! Not every other week, not every 10 days, every single week!" In It's About Time, she convinced herself that it was down to her "to prevent whatever horrible thing happens in the future!" In Magical Mystery Cure, she was sure the spell she cast "changed the Elements of Harmony! That must be why their cutie marks are all wrong!"

The first obvious difference between Magical Mystery Cure and the two earlier episodes is that it is the only episode where Twilight actually identifies the problem correctly. In Lesson Zero she had convinced herself she had a responsibility she did not actually possess. Celestia's assignment in Friendship is Magic - part 2 ran thusly: "I, Princess Celestia, hereby decree that the unicorn Twilight Sparkle shall take on a new mission for Equestria. She must continue to study the magic of friendship. She must report to me her findings from her new home in Ponyville." No mention is made of weekly deadlines or that Twilight's reports had to do with solving problems. Those were conditions Twilight imposed upon herself. I know what that's like; I tend to do that myself, never with good consequences for myself or my friends. It's one of the reasons I identify with, and like, Twilight so much.

In Lesson Zero Twilight projected her own unreasonable demands for herself upon Princess Celestia, then attempted to fulfill them having raised the stakes impossibly high. In It's About Time she again makes up a responsibility for herself. She never gives her future self time to deliver her message, then jumps to an improbable conclusion from the very little evidence she has.

Magical Mystery Cure, by contrast, has her identify what went wrong right as soon as she sets her mind to the problem. Before she does set her mind to the larger problem of sorting out her friends' cutie marks, however, as I have remarked in my analysis of Magical Mystery Cure's songs, she deftly avoided the mistake she made in Lesson Zero. She was given an assignment by Princess Celestia to "understand and rewrite" Star Swirl the Bearded's unfinished masterpiece, and had, to her knowledge, failed to make any progress. And yet she does not go manic like she did in Lesson Zero, instead choosing to celebrate her life in Ponyville. That opening sequence, when viewed in light of what we know took place the night before, shows that Twilight has grown past placing impossible expectations on herself and projecting them onto other ponies.

By being able to identify the correct problem, Twilight demonstrated her progress in Magical Mystery Cure before she even attempts to solve the problem she identifies. And her attempted solution, too, stands in contrast with her attempted solutions in Lesson Zero and It's About Time. In Lesson Zero, Twilight placed herself under unreasonable time pressure, and so felt she needed a quick fix to her problem. Remember, she feels at the beginning that she needs to "learn a lesson" about friendship to report to the Princess. She quickly loses sight of this objective, however, in her search for a quick fix. "Learn a lesson" subtly morphs into "solve [somepony else's] friendship problem". She approaches each "problem" she identifies as the omniscient lecturer, and leaves disappointed when nopony needs an omniscient lecturer. That's a friendship lesson she could have learned right there: be available to the needs and wants of your friends. Talk and listen to them, not at them. This is the ur-acting technique, by the way, despite what Stanislavskarity would have us believe But she was not available to the needs and wants of her friends, and had cut herself off even from her own perceived needs and wants in order to service her projections!

It's About Time posed her a problem, in her mind, that demanded omnipotence and omniscience. She did not know what terrible event would happen in the future, and she was determined to prevent it. Of course her plans would be grandiose. Of course they would all fail: Twilight is neither omniscient nor omnipotent. As each plan failed, she came closer and closer to realizing it, but pushed the realization away each time as the responsibility she had taken upon herself weighed more and more heavily.

Magical Mystery Cure again stands in contrast to these two episodes, in that Twilight's plan doesn't involve her shouldering some impossible burden she's constructed for herself. It's Spike, not Twilight, that suggests magical brute-force solutions, and it's Twilight that rejects them. The Twilight of It's About Time would have been all for attempting Zecora's cure for the Cutie Pox, attempting to cast the memory spell that had broken Discord's curse, or attempting to research a counterspell. Her solution is both more beautiful and more subtle: "I may not be able to remind them of who they are, but I can show them what they mean to each other. They'll find the part of themselves that's been lost so they can help the friend they care about so much!" It's a plan fundamentally different from her plans in Lesson Zero or It's About Time. That she was able to arrive at this plan, without having to exhaust all other possible options but simply by reminding herself of her connection with her friends, speaks to her growth.

In Lesson Zero and It's About Time, it was not the situations that backed Twilight into a corner, but Twilight herself. Her own neuroses, which prevented her from correctly identifying her problems and arriving at solutions, were her biggest obstacles. Magical Mystery Cure does not confront her with a less dire or insoluble situation. If anything, it's the reverse! Her problem in Magical Mystery Cure is more insoluble than the (real, not imagined) problems she faced in those episodes. It's a new, strange situation that has deleterious effects on the landscape and the ponies of Ponyville, and which cannot be solved with brute force magic. And yet the most dire of the three situations was solved the most easily. A problem does not become easier to solve the more threatening it becomes; Lesson Zero and It's About Time showed us that by inflating the rather small actual problems to impossible-to-confront dangers. The difference must lie in the pony doing the problem-solving. Twilight by Magical Mystery Cure had grown enough to arrive at the solution without putting herself in the way of her own success.

EDIT: huh. I fully expected to be ninja'd half a dozen times. I am disappointed in you, Ponythread.
