Re: Can we just do another music thread?
On one of my regular random music binges, I stumbled upon Talk Talk. I thought "hmm... interesting" and left a note about them for later. Well... now it's later and I got to listen to The Colour of Spring and Spirit of Eden samples. It's beautiful, enchanting and I'm kind of lost on words here. Mark Hollis has a great voice.
On an etirely different note, Jean-Stephan Regottaz is worth checking out.In a war it doesn't matter who's right, only who's left.

Re: Can we just do another music thread?
I recently nigh overlistened DeVotchka's cover of Venus in Furs. Bloody brilliant. I almost like it more than the original.

Re: Can we just do another music thread?
You dig the gothabilly? Gothabilly's pretty fun. Not quite on level with the best psychobilly, but it's all fun.

Re: Can we just do another music thread?
Anyone figure out their favorite albums of the year yet? I'm still working on mine, trying to track down a few albums I still want to hear.

Re: Can we just do another music thread?
I don't really know yet. I was unimpressed this year. I haven't given Grace For Drowning or Empros super fair listenings yet, plus a few things that I'm sure that I'm forgetting. I guess I'd have to go with Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will, but even that is tentative since it's (comparatively) not such a great album.

Re: Can we just do another music thread?
Honestly, for favourite album I'm still going to have to give it to Amplifier's The Octopus. Not because there hasn't been anything good released since January (there very much has), but they just really aced that one.
Depends what you're comparing it to. If it's in comparison to other post-rock released this year then there's not much competition besides Explosions in the Sky. Or, to put it another way, there's not much competition

Re: Can we just do another music thread?
Anyone here listen to Van Canto? They're an a cappella metal band I just came across, found them because they apparently did a cover of Blind Guardian's Bard's Song.
I Am Human is a song I particularly like by them, has a very humanistic bent.At the heart of all beauty lies something inhuman, and these hills, the softness of the sky, the outline of the trees at this very minute lose the illusory meaning with which we clothed them, henceforth more remote than a lost paradise.

Re: Can we just do another music thread?
Is that what they call gothic americana? If I remember right it's a lot of stuff from Denver, I think I really dug it. There was a mother band that did similar stuff but I can't remember the name... one word , starts with a T I think... oh well.
Recently I finally gave Yonkers by Tyler the Creator a listen. I liked it so finally I took the plunge and listened to a bunch of OFWGKTA stuff. My analysis so far? Maybe a little overhyped but largely pretty good. Definitely not the new Wu like some people were saying though lol.

Re: Can we just do another music thread?
Favourite album, you say?
About 95% of my music picks were some flavour of metal, so I'll just focus on the few that wasn't for now.
I'd say Diary of Dreams - Ego: X. Not quite as good as other releases, but Diary of Dreams is an old standby. I could listen to it non-stop.Awesome fremetar by wxdruid.

Re: Can we just do another music thread?
The Cure came out with a 140 minute live album last week, so I choose that. Other than that, maybe Bon Iver, maybe the new Mountain Goats. There's been a lot of good stuff. New Neon Indian, new Real Estate, new Crystal Castles are all good too.

Here's one. Instead of best albums of 2011, let's do top 5 albums you first listened to this year.
1. Entertainment!-Gang of Four
2. Transference-Spoon
3. Tago Mago-Can
4. Goat-The Jesus Lizard
5. Embryonic-The Flaming Lips

Do any of you have any experience or advice on buying a vinyl record player?

Re: Can we just do another music thread?
Hmmm, not on buying one. I do know the magic ways of connecting it to little boxies, and then connecting the little boxie gadget to the computer, and thus ripping the Vinyl to MP3 or FLAC.

Re: Can we just do another music thread?
Saw AWOLNATION, Ubiquitous Synergy Seeker, Dinosaur Bones and the Pack A.D. last night. 'twas pretty good. USS stole the show, as usual, Pack A.D. was pretty generic, and not very skilled, Dinosaur Bones was more interesting, and a lot more chill, and AWOLNATION have 2, maybe even 3 good songs.

Re: Can we just do another music thread?
I discovered, in the last 48 hours, that Can provides best-in-class soundtracks for two activities. Breaking speed limits, and mackin'. Doing either while Can blares just makes it so much classier.

Re: Can we just do another music thread?
Friday night, a local music magazine celebrated its 100th issue with a show at one of the larger clubs in town, featuring 6 acts with a very nice variety of style. I have almost the entire night filmed, and have posted 3 of the complete sets so far.
The headliner act was Sister Crayon, who have been getting some nice national attention in indie circles. A more techno/trip hop Bats for Lashes might be a good description. At one point, Terra Lopez starts singing off mic, and it still fills the club as well as the bajillion watt sound system!
Next is rapper Random Abiladeze with DJ Rated R on sound/turntable. I've worked with him before when he appeared on the access music show I work for, but this was the first time I had a chance to see/film him live. Good stuff even though I'm generally not into rap.
ZuhG are a really fun reggae/roots/jam band who are some of the hardest working people in the local scene. They run a purely local music/art/clothing store in the downtown mall, and play as often as possible. They'll be going on a nationwide tour in March/April, so if you're intrigued by them, check out their page linked in the description for info on whether they're coming around your area. I have another set uploaded from them as well.I have my own TV show featuring local musicians performing live. YouTube page with full episodes and outtake clips here.
I also have another YouTube page with local live music clips I've filmed on my own.
Then there is my gaming YouTube page with Kerbal Space Program, Minecraft, and others.
Finally, I stream on Twitch, mostly Kerbal Space Program and Minecraft.
