Looking for a new cross
I'm hoping to find a new cross necklace, maybe something in a nice medieval style. Basically something really nerdy but still expresses my faith. You guys have any good insights?

Re: Looking for a new cross
Well, silver seems like a traditional metal for such things. Perhaps with a piece of... hmm. Quartz? An opaque white [something] in the center might look nice with a light metal, and white quartz is cheap/free, so easy to obtain and doesn't carry a big risk if you mess up placing/shaping it.

Re: Looking for a new cross
I have some ideas on how to track down representations of St. Cuthbert's holy symbol. But, those rely on an assumption an online shop is more convenient than what is in your area. As you might be dealing with something people pay significantly more attention to on a daily basis, there could be a specialty store around you. Have you looked at local stores and found them wanting?

Re: Looking for a new cross
Medieval has many faces. There's the period dominated by Byzantine models, with development by the peoples of the north-west. Then you have the Gothic and Romanesque, and special crosses designed to show membership to a certain group, like Maltese crosses and those of other chivalric and monastic orders.

One model sold by the British Museum: http://www.britishmuseumshoponline.o...nvt/cmcn501190

And then you have five more centuries, usually with even better looking stuff.Originally Posted by J.R.R. Tolkien, 1955

Re: Looking for a new cross
I am always a fan of Celtic Crosses (here's an example image). However, for an article of faith, I would recommend a crucifix over a square cross, as the square cross has associations with the Sunwheel from Pagan roots, while the crucifix is a Christian article of faith.

Re: Looking for a new cross
Depending on where you are, a Celtic Cross can also be a Neo-Nazi symbol.

Re: Looking for a new cross
Something only becomes a hate symbol if society at large allows it. When we let people take these things and turn them into symbols of hate, we are giving those hate groups power to which they are in no way entitled. This passive acceptance, and willingness to let hate groups appropriate anything they want, "Oh well, I guess that's just a hate symbol now." is just disgusting to me.
