@^: You're a monster! That level of details is incredible!
About the airbrush tool: It's all about experimenting. I looked into some photos of whales in the deep sea, and tried to mimick the bubbles + Light diffussion. Thanks, but I really must say that, with the proper colors and figure, it's not impossible to insert something made with the airb tool.
Speaking of which. I will soon upload a sketch that I plan to OotSify later on, and a Pirate version of Scarlet Knight.
Stay tuned!Last edited by Crimmy : Tomorrow at 26:72 DM.

Re: OotS Style Art/Fanart Showcase V
Did this last night while under the effects of sleep medicine (couldn't sleep for like 30+ hours @.@), I have no idea what it is:
This I did today, and it may turn into my first Nexus (FreeForm RP) character:
Also this, a Paint avatar, for my good friend Lord Magtok:

And Reisen Udongein Inaba:
I think she is missing something. Probably the insanity inducing waves she is known for. How would I draw those?
I plan on making Hong Meiling next.
---------------------------------
I imagine the first one to be an eldritch guardian of some kind for a virtual world.
I know you didn't ask for a comment, but the second one, the drow... I think her cleavage seems a bit low on her torso.
The Paintatar made me smile.
These sketches are excellent, and they look fairly large. My sketches are always quite small; for instance, my largest sketch, Yukari, is about eight centimetres tall.
The demon one with the inverted cross forehead reminds me of that request you asked of me long ago as the alter ego of lava sword guy. His expression is sheer menace!
I don't recognize the singer... is he based on a real person?

@DEB V: Thanks! Her hair is just like how it turned out in the original sketch. I guess I need more practice drawing believable hair. ^_^Last edited by Kurien; 2012-08-31 at 11:37 AM. Reason: I pressed the post button instead of preview >.<

Re: OotS Style Art/Fanart Showcase V
@^: You're a monster! That level of details is incredible!
I did think of elliptical light rings, however I think it's pretty difficult to get perfect irregularly oriented ellipsoid shapes in Paint, so I opted to not do that. I did think of having a red moon as a background, and to shroud Reisen in darkness with emphasis on her eyes. My attempt at drawing a moon in Paint could've gone better:
But in any case I decided to try it anyway:
What do you think? Glow effects are quite doable in Paint, but require a lot of work, so I didn't do that. I did try firing up Paint Tool SAI, but I don't really know how to use it. >.<'
Ah, I see. When I saw the singer my first thought was Freddie Mercury, but I don't know him very well, so I thought he lacked a mustache.
That's better, but I think the cleavage could be just a smidgen higher...
And her in ritual garb, doing something dancey for Lolth or something:
*snip*
The legs turned out to be too short. That's a common problem when avataring, when you (And when I say "you" I'm not referring to Derjuin specificially) focus on the details on the upper body. Then you try to get the character to fit in a square, but realize that the upper body has taken up most of the space, so you end up squishing the legs to fit in the square instead of maybe having the legs extend past the boundaries of the avatar frame (be not visible). I know I made that mistake before in my early days of avataring.
In essence I never really left -- just underwent a period of extreme lurkerhood-- I still check the Arts and Crafts forum somewhat regularly. As for infrequent posting: can you tell that I lack confidence in my social skills, even on the Internet? Anyway, thanks for the compliment! I strive to please.
===============================
And here we have Hong Meiling, with theme music:
Edit: I focused so much on completing her I think I failed to notice glaring faults... Does anyone else think her right leg or right arm is too long? It's a fairly easy edit to do in MS Paint, but I won't change anything if no one sees anything wrong.
I'm probably going to take a break from avataring for a week or so, especially with school coming up in less than than two days (and also to rest my poor eyes T_T). But here is the next sketch I will do:
Can you tell who it is?Last edited by Kurien; 2012-09-02 at 05:00 PM.

Re: OotS Style Art/Fanart Showcase V
@Kurien: Look, here's the thing. Add a bit more brightness to the "eye color" (center, instead of the outline), but without it being red. That might work.
Also, do try a brighter color for the eye outline, but it still has to be a darker than the eye itself.
That moon is rocking, I don't know what you mean with "could have gone better".Last edited by Crimmy : Tomorrow at 26:72 DM.

Re: OotS Style Art/Fanart Showcase V
I can't imagine Reisen's eyes to *not* be a vivid shade of crimson, if that's what you mean-- that's one of her defining characteristics in my mind. However, I realize now that more contrast was needed for the eyes to stand out:
Thanks. I guess I'm just overly critical of myself, but I imagine what the moon *could* look like and my moon seems lesser in comparison. >.<

Maybe I should threaten to draw something more often - it seem like a good way to motivate you. :-P
Nah, I will still draw something, but at the moment I'm playing a new long awaited video-game until I get tired of it so it will probably be a few weeks before that. :-)
I see no lack here at least, but if you have you could just make your art talk for you.

Wow. Everybody here has some impressive skills. I hope mine are up to snuff.
Anyways, here is an avatar for a friend of mine's druid character. His name is Sif.
Feel free to give my critique, or any advice!~The meteorite is the source of the light, and the meteor's just what we see,
and the meteoroid is a stone that's devoid of the fire that propelled it to thee.
And the meteorite's just what causes the light, and the meteor's how it's perceived,
and the meteoroid's a bone thrown from the void that lies quiet in offering to thee.~

Re: OotS Style Art/Fanart Showcase V
I didn't draw her as a request for anyone, so I don't mind if you use her. But here, I had already resized her:
Oh, I wouldn't want you to feel as though your art doesn't belong here because you are relatively inexperienced at avataring. Of course, this is where you receive critiques and discover new techniques to improve your art. I think you're quite proficient at picking suitable colours which are not oversaturated.
I do have some pointers for MSPaintery. You see how in my pictures the line width is greater than yours? By pressing CTRL & the plus sign key on the numberpad, you can increase the line width beyond the five sizes you can select on the toolbar. Each press of the key combination increases the line width by one pixel. Pressing CTRL & the minus sign key decreases the line width by one pixel.
I find this function very useful because I usually use larger "canvas" sizes-- this makes it easier to add precise detail. As Paint is limited to a standard pixel size, in smaller canvases, details may only be approximated.
Although there is something that can be said of pixel art and spriting. I am often impressed by spriters like Neorice who can take a detailed design and achieve an extreme abstraction of those details--and it's amazing how things can look good while fitting in a ~50 (?) or so pixel frame.
"Now you're thinking with pixels." *am stabbed*
Another thing I usually do is make the background the colour of the normal background for transparent avatars on the forums (R(240), G(231), B(211) for me). This is because when you resize things, the anti-aliasing will incorporate the colour of the portion of the avatar that will be transparent into the anti-alias effect. If the background is just white, then under zoomed-in scrutiny the anti-aliasing effect stands out on the forum background as a frost-like outline. (I hope I explained this clearly.)
@Derjuin: The second one is interesting. Her unusual stance resembles a rampant bird, such as a crane or eagle. Her weapons look rather impractical though.

Re: OotS Style Art/Fanart Showcase V
Thanks for the tips, Kurien! When you make paint-tars, the more pixels, the smoother the line. I use the forum colors when I submit avatars for people, but I don't tend to do that any other times. I started making my avatars using the guide here on the forum, and I haven't really diverged much from the whole "150 pixel diameter head, 400 pixels to a side background" thing yet. I only really diverge when I scan in avatars and then color them in paint, like so.
Spoiler'd for size.

Also, my bro asked my to draw a Rage Walker for him, and here is what I came up with.

Re: OotS Style Art/Fanart Showcase V
So I know this called a Showcase and all, but i have a bit of an odd question to ask.
Would anybody here be willing to create and OotS-style image of the character of a friend of mine, but not show it off to the rest of the world? I'm working on a bit of a surprise for them so I’m trying to avoid public postings of images I’ve acquired of said character to prevent said friend from finding out beforehand. Another issue is that it's kind of a long-term goal as I’ve run out of cash for the moment to commission images, so things have been going slow as I’m kinda looking for volunteers here. When it is eventually finished you will of course be properly credited and linked if you so desire.
If you are interested, either send me a PM or answer here, I’ll check back a few times for the next few days to see if anyone's up for it.
And simply because i don't want to post that alone and make this entire thing about me,
It Kind of resembles a Naaru from the Warcraft serise, mostly in that it seems to be a floating crystalline creature that emits light.
And THAT my friend is just plain Epic. Who needs to HOLD a weapon when you've got a whirring tornado of death you control with your mind?Last edited by Draconi Redfir; 2012-09-07 at 04:57 AM.

You're welcome, and yes, actually. Structurally, I see no huge errors, but is that a stripe on the cape? It looks a little more like a string. Perhaps the edges should go all the way out, and cut into the lines? I don't really know how to phrase that right.
Also, you were having trouble with the cape and wings? Could you elaborate?~The meteorite is the source of the light, and the meteor's just what we see,
and the meteoroid is a stone that's devoid of the fire that propelled it to thee.

Re: OotS Style Art/Fanart Showcase V
Yes it a stripe. I had it on top of the line, but in inkscape, I couldn't tell where it actually ended very well, so to play is safe I pulled it back a little bit...
And on the wings with the cape. looking at it, it just doesn't make sense. I want both there, but the cape can't really set on top of the wings, and I can't fathom how the wings would go through the cape, as I have it now.

The head is actually very much too big, I think, even for a gnome. the sword hilt is also kinda weird.
