Default The Stick Awards II: Second Edition (#0931 - #0940)

Welcome to The Stick Awards II: Second Edition!

The Stick Awards are handed out to the best strips of all time as chosen by our fellow Playgrounders.

This week we are covering the comic strips 931 through 940.

For full details about the Stick Awards, please check out the main thread here.

To read more about the original Stick Awards, created by Nazzo, the 102nd, please read his thread here.

To vote in this thread, simply state which comic of the ten listed is your favorite. Bolding the number of the comic (Like this) helps it stand out.

Voting for this week will close on Aug 20th, 4pm EDT. Any votes made after that will NOT count toward the totals.

Last time, 922 - Payback decided that the best way to figure out who should advance to the next round was to chow down on its competitors so there would be fewer to choose from. While it wasn't the most original of strategies, the execution of it impressed the judges enough to send it on to the Best of the Hundred tournament.

The end, perhaps in more ways than one, is fast approaching. But before we start looking towards that, there is a punultimate duel to deal with between the following strips. And while the best way to sort it out might be through cutting remarks and biting insults, the second best way to resolve a winner is by voting in.....

So, this is the round were I actually joined the forums and began participating in the strip discussions. From here on out, all these strips will seem very current, even though some of them are almost two years old. I cast my vote for #936, though 935 is very close.

936 feels like the obvious choice--tons of emotional heft, character development for Elan, pays off beats from hundreds of strips earlier, and "THIS IS A TERRIBLE ENDING" is a sensational ending.

I'm going with 935 anyway, because I like Laurin's decision to make a tactical withdrawal based on evidence, and also "no way, no how is some crazy old dude gettin' back on our ship after breakin' a lady's arm."

There's a lot I'd like to vote for here--particularly 938, with its amusing punchline and cute scene between my two favorite characters--but come on. It's gotta be 936. That strip is Order of the Stick at its finest.

Screw you, Tarquin--it's a phenomenal ending.

really wanted to be able to vote both for 936 and 938, great great strips. I'll once again vote for the more important and better one, 936, and keep 938 for the next pun / punchline award: Stick awards III: sticks awardier.

Really want to vote for 935 for V and Sabine working together and 938 for Elan awesomeness, but 936 has to beat out both of them.

It was really close between that, 931, 932, 933, 935, and 936. Ultimately I'm going to go with 935 for showing how Sabine helped.

I'll take a different direction and vote 934, if only for Tarquin's speech, though the oncoming caster fight helps as well.

Man, this is the hardest vote I can recall (although they all sort of blur together).

Arguably, 936 is better than 935. But I'm sick of voting for climaxes, and 935 feels more unique somehow - possibly because the Order making tactically sound decisions and defeating powerful enemies without unusual shenanigans is still very refreshing for me. The bit about Sabine is pretty special, too. So 935: Caster Fight it is.

a lot of great strips here.

But 936 is a GREAT ending. Eat some dust, Tarquin.

    Tarquin's Fall # 936
Seriously, this is way easy. By that point, I wanted to see the last of Tarquin soooo badly. Not that he was an uninteresting character mind you. But he had fulfilled his narrative role and was overstaying his welcome.
Plus, it gave Elan some sweet lines.

#936, wherein Tarquin is a confused old man shouting TV Tropes nonsense in the desert. So, just another Tarquin strip.

Caster Fight and both the previous and the next strips are some of my favorite strips ever.

However, I'll vote for #931, for flying in the face of tradition.

Some really great strips there. I really enjoy Blackwing, most notable the "Oooooo! Caster fight! Caster fight!" - "Sush." - "(Casterfight!)" exchange in 934.

But I have to agree with Tarquin that this is TERRIFIC ending - with that, put my vote down for 936 - End of the Line.

(I know that what Tarquin actual says, but I couldn't resist the pun, and I think Tarquin would get especially mad at it )

Man, that's hard! #936 is fantastic ending, no matter what Tarquin thinks, but I'll deffer to the combination of observations, calculations and superior intelligence of #935 - Caster Fight.

Has to be 936. A great moment both for Haley (doubleshot with a broken arm!) and Elan, figuring out the right way to defeat his father - at least for that day. "I'm not a twin anymore. Don't worry. You'll live." is probably the coldest we've ever seen Elan.

Hmmmm. I really want to vote for 934, as it really has a masterful look into Tarquin's psyche, but I think I have to agree with the crowd and go for 936. Might not vote for it in future rounds. But it deserves its moment in the sun for right now.

    Ah, missed this, AFK. Curses.

For the record, I like 936 very much, and 935 was worthy too, I very much like 932's punchline, but I would have voted for 939, which sadly didn't get any love here. I love how Belkar is the only one keeping it straight about Durkula, and the punchline makes me laugh a lot.
