That's because it would be extremely hard to make a smiling Matt Smith look menacing. Ever. He's so adorkable as the Doctor that I'm really impressed by his darker or deeper moods.

I have a special review coming up! But it'll take a while to fully put it up because well, backstory.

For the Brits, it's about a certain thing that aired on Saturday.

It'll be joyously fun, and semi-liveblogged.

Last night I watched the 40th anniversary documentary on Doctor Who and they mentioned one thing I think is worth pointing out. Peter Davidson (Five) was apparently told point blank he was not allowed to put his arm over the shoulder of any female companion, that he was only allowed to touch male companions because people were so concerned about suggesting there was any hanky panky going on in the Tardis. I expect Troughton (Two) had a similar rule going on, because he (like Davidson) was so much younger than his predecessor. Which is pretty funny because, nowadays, the efforts they went to avoid suggesting romantic ties only serves to infer a whole different set. And also we now have Smith (Eleven) married with a pretty blatantly advertised physical element.

One other thing I found interesting:

In the second series of the show, they mention a scene where the crew is trying to escape with an injured caveman in tow. As the caveman is lying on the ground, the Doctor thoughtfully picks up a large rock and walks toward the caveman before getting intercepted by Ian. Has he ever attempted anything quite that ruthless since?

Yeah, but those are enemies that are either currently or soon to be hostile. The caveman was an innocent whose only crime was being injured enough to endanger their escape. Those are two entirely different scales of dark.

The First Doctor, especially in his first few serials, was kind of a terrible person in a lot of ways, only gradually turning into the sort of guy we tend to think of. I'm going to spoiler this in case someone doesn't want to have the first season spoiled, but I don't expect that'll be a problem.

    Spoiler

Among those of his exploits that I can remember are:

    * In the first episode, the Doctor refuses to let Ian and Barbara leave the TARDIS once they know he's an alien, and then when Susan threatens to leave the TARDIS he deliberately triggers it, stranding Ian and Barbara with him for the next two years.
    * In the Daleks, he steals a piece of his own TARDIS so that the others will let him explore the mysterious city, pretending that it's broken. Then, when he finds out that the Kahls are in danger of being genocided by the Daleks, he tries to leave the planet. He only stops because the Daleks got the TARDIS piece he lost.
    * In The Edge of Destruction, he attempts to murder Ian and Barbara (although to be fair, he does think they're sabotaging the TARDIS at this point).
    * The first time we see him have any kind of respect or liking for humans at all is in the Aztecs, when he accidentally gets married. At the end of that episode, he can't bring himself to discard the token his 'wife' gave him, and takes it onto the TARDIS with him.

After that, I think he's mostly only a jerk to people who actually deserve it, but he definitely tricks more than a few people to their deaths.

Everyone's the Rani. Personally, I think I'd like the Ice Warriors to come back, they weren't in many serials back in Classic WHo, but I've heard they were rather popular.

I honestly would rather of had more Commander Strax. I somehow feel the butler thing is an attempt to latch onto how awesome Strax was, and let's just say I'll be judging the man. He has large boots to fill.

I think the worst thing about having the Daleks in the show was that agreement they had to be in each season. Meaning we got to see the Doctor beat them, each season.

The episode Dalek was awesome, one of my personal favorites. Since then? Well we have the Daleks who couldn't figure out to turn off their own minions before they were almost wiped out. Daleks beaten by WWII planes. Daleks begging for mercy. And two "good" Daleks that betrays the Dalek ideals.

It's sad, cause I really do enjoy Daleks.

I'm not saying I'm fond of Daleks in general. In fact, the episode with the WWII Daleks is among my least favourite episodes of the new series. It's just that that quote is up there with this one.

Bob: And what would that be, sir?

So it's more like I have high hopes for the episode despite the Daleks.

My issue isn't with the Daleks themselves, even if they hve been over used I really like them.

The problem is that it always ends in "destroying them all, except for the one/couple who survived through increasingly worse ways". Would it be so hard for to it to end in a tie, or end with a win that doesn't involve the total destruction of them all do that theres a real reason for there to be more.

Would it be so hard for to it to end in a tie, or end with a win that doesn't involve the total destruction of them all do that theres a real reason for there to be more.
So far, in Moffat's reign, the Daleks have won the only real conflict. The other two appearances were of crippled lone drones that were unable to put up a decent fight.

Haven't seen the trailer, but I would think (given Moffat), that "Who killed all the Daleks?" is going to be tied to the Time War, not yet another genocide by the Man of Peace.

The quote comes when Rory steps into a room filled with dead Daleks. He then asks, "Who killed all the Daleks?"

I'm pretty sure he doesn't mean all of the Daleks in the cosmic sense, but is merely referring to all of the Daleks that had been previously in the room.

Rupert Graves is going to be in this series? So happy, I love him as Lestrade and in everything else I've seen him in.

I think it'll be more focused on the fact that it was actually the Doctor that killed them. I can't remember any time in the new series where the Doctor actually killed them, its always been one of the companions. Rose killed them in Parting of the Ways and Donna killed them in The Stolen Earth/Journey's End, where the Doctor even offered aid to Davros who didn't accept it. The closest he got was banishing some of them, along with the Cybermen, in Army of Ghosts/Doomsday.

If the Daleks were to actually kill Amy in front of the Doctor... well, my mind isn't big enough to begin to think how the Doctor would utterly destroy them. He was near enough to going ballistic on Colonel Mantin(sp?) and Madame Kovarian when they simply kidnapped her.

That was handy half human clone Doctor. And new series created the time war, which was ended by the doctor killing all the Daleks (and Time Lords)

You know, now that I think about it, I've only heard about it from second hand sources (from this site a few times). But apparently, in order to use the Daleks in the new series Davies had to agree that the Daleks needed to make an appearance at least once a season. And they have, their shortest appearance being last season when you just see the Doctor dismantle one in the last episode.

Another problem is, up until Moffat took over each time we see the Daleks the menace gets upped. One lone Dalek. An army of crazy Daleks. An army of sane Daleks invading Britain. Then the Daleks in Manhattan thing happened, which doesn't follow the pattern but sucks anyway. Then we get a super big huge Dalek army with Davros trying to destroy the Universe. And despite these huge forces, the best Dalek episode is still one lone Dalek taking down everyone. Each time we get the huge threat Daleks we get to watch the Doctor/Companions utterly destroy the Daleks. It's stopped being interesting.

Now the one bit of hope I have is Moffat so far did not follow the pattern in his run. We got the Daleks get a tie against the Doctor in Victory of the Daleks, and the lone stone Dalek was pretty threatening (until it begged for mercy, that was just, just no). But from the look of the trailer we're gonna get a big huge Dalek threat this season, and it's even spoilered in the trailer that the Doctor kills them.

But I still have some hope. Because if it's the Doctor wipes out all the Daleks then that trailer is such a huge spoiler it would not be funny. I personally hope that since the episode is supposed to have all the Daleks ever involved we get the logical conclusion, the Daleks attack each other. Daleks kill the Daleks and one group of them rises to become a major threat later on in the series.

Defeating them in a mostly bloodless takeover and forcing the Colonel to say "Run away" (from one of the scariest individuals in the universe) is going ballistic? Honestly, I think that was rather tame, his take down of the Silence was far more brutal.
