I thought about this. It makes no sense for Redcloak to kill his spy just so he won't reveal anything bad about the phylactery. Why would be Xykon (or, technically, Tsukiko) interested in a hobbo mook that helped Redcloak to recover the phylactery? And even they did, what could the spy tell? That Redcloak got the phylactery from the Resistance? That was what Redcloak said to Xykon anyway! Redcloak wouln't share his plan about the switch with the spy at any rate, that would be useless and dangerous. So I'm beginning to think that Redcloak's plan to dispose of his spy had nothing to do with the phylactery, and that there was another sinister motive...

You're over-thinking it. The best way for Redcloak to make sure he isn't caught in a lie is to kill anyone who might know ANYTHING about the recovery of the phylactery. Even if the information that individual knows isn't central to the switcheroo, if it contradicts any part of the story-as-told-by-Redcloak, Xykon will immediately become suspicious. By being meticulously thorough in his deception, Redcloak ensures that he is the only eyewitness account to the phylactery's journey. Hobgoblin who found it first? Dead, along with his entire team. Resistance who took it from them? Dead to the last man (except Niu!), including the polymorphed spies from both sides, using summoned/gated creatures no less. Tsukiko, who suspected, and her sentient wights? Consumed. While Redcloak does tell the dead blacksmith he's sorry it had to end like this, I'm pretty sure the elder's fate was sealed--albeit in a less painful manner than being drained by wights or whatever else Tsukiko did to him.

The problem with the spy is: Redcloak knew about the Resistance spy, and didn't kill him. Why? So the Resistance could capture the phylactery! Redcloak needed to have some private time with the phylactery to make the switch, and he couldn't be sure that would happen if the hobgoblins just took it back to the tower.

Maybe that's not how it played out, but it seems like a reasonable proposition. Why else wouldn't he have just crushed the Resistance a month ago?

The second and third panels here hint (but aren't conclusive) that it might have been suspiciously easy for the spy to operate (i.e. he might have been fed the information

So what's your explanation for Redcloak disintegrating the corpse rather than resurrecting the artisan?

The information that someone made an exact duplicate of Xykon's phylactery is information Redcloak considers it very, very "necessary" Xykon never hear a whiff of.
