I have seen something that gave me a newfound respect for Mookie's work.

I saw the Flash Gordon movie. I don't think anything can really prepare you for that. Not even music by Queen.

Okay, okay... I hereby officially concede my theory that Terracciano is a Misogynist due to painful breakup, because I have an even more insane and wonderful theory that I'd like to supplant it with.

Mookie's old 'Ladyfriend' was the actual writer of much of the earlier Dominic Deegan.

This theory is courtesy one of my RL friends who mentioned that earlier Dominic Deegan seemed to have a very "idealized fantasy boys" picture of the male cast similar to that shown by certain classifications of fanfiction writers... that Gregory was shy, naive and vulnerable, Dex was ruggedly handsome, but honorable toward women, and Dominic was grumpy, but judged people by who they were inside... and that the right girl could change him into an honest-to-goodness perfect guy. Also, a lot of the plotting in earlier plot arcs was more steady, and showed a lot more of the understandings of dramatic buildup, consistency, and other lessons Mookie seems to have "forgotten" in these past few arcs. So far we've been marvelling that Mookie could have gotten so much worse at writing over time... making mistakes he never has before, blatantly contradicting established characters, running roughshod over his own comic...

...What if it was all because he'd never REALLY written the comic in the first place? What if everything good we've ever REALLY liked about the comic was due to the anonymous "Ladyfriend"? What if the epic failure we've seen these past few seasons haven't been the result of some kind of authorial breakdown, or sudden writer's block, or what have you... but by Mookie finally getting to the end of the parts of the story scripted by this woman who was part of his life for an indeterminable amount of time? Still, it would make a twisted kind of sense. I mean, the extra Mookieinserts didn't start appearing until Snowsong, right? I know Nimmel appeared in "Storm" but he was more of a plot device than a character then. And you could attribute the art decay to Mookie suddenly having to spend more time plotting things out - so he has less time to practice his drawing.

And, of course, things shifted from anime artistic conventions (Storm) to comic book artistic conventions (Snowsong) too.

It seems that every time he consults his 'balls' he just keeps saying, "Nope, Celesto/Tim/Jacob is not doing any mischief today, so everything's in the clear!" when they seem to be causing mayhem where ever they go. (Except Jacob) So what exactly is the point of the Bastard Watch then?

I think my favorite part about this latest revelation is that it combines Not As You Know Him with That Makes Me Feel Angry.

So first of all: who announces that they have mood swings when they're sad? And then tells the room to "wait for it?" Pure puppetry!

But secondly: Gregory does not have "mood swings" when he is sad. He goes to his couch fort and sulks. This was, in fact, one of Gregory's defining characteristics, originally. Hell, he was still doing it the last time we saw him!

But this is old hat for Mookie. He's already done this with Jayden. If he's going to derail characters, he's going to have to be more creative than this

Wait. I've had a thought. What if this really is Mookie's way of showing us Dex is gay/bisexual? It's already been established that Szark hearts Dominic, but that his love is quite shallow (see his reaction to puke monster in Oracle Hunter). Dex shaves his stubble off again and Szark will have his Dominic doppleganger, with extra muscles for added shallow pleasure!!


Greg's heart will be broken, until he realizes that this was Dominic's plan all along. He does so love to be guided. And then he will fall in love with whatever woman Dominic has chosen (because no first caste character could really be gay, come on).

Double wedding for the Deegan family, civil ceremony for teh gays (or massive orgy, whichever), and a happy ending for everyone.

While Mookie's habit of bolding words at random isn't exactly new, I thought one of Daniel Drazen's comments on Sonic the Hedgehog #44 was funny because it applies so much to Dominic Deegan:

So first of all: who announces that they have mood swings when they're sad? And then tells the room to "wait for it?" Pure puppetry!

My theory is the following: As we know, each arc of Dominic Deegan is dedicated to one or more ways of failure, which Mookie then perfects.

This arc is, so far, pretty big on character derailment, having sent Dex' dignity and reservation, as well as - arguably - his respectful attitude towards women, straight to hell while also mutilating the corpse of the already butchered Gregory some more.
However, Mookie of course knows that he has already done this a few times before. Not only that, derailment was one of the selling points of the Shadow of Siegfried arc.

So, he has decided to devote himself not only to further character derailment, but also to the most forced jokes ever conceived by a human being this time. The results speak for themselves: Within four updates, he went from merely reusing an old joke, to copying the Simpsons in an utterly ridiculous way, then to this almost painful "Cheers." gag, and finally to today's sorry excuse for a punchline.

(By the way, another major part of this arc seems to be horrible dialogue, which shows just what a genius Mookie is: No lesser hack would have seen the chemistry between derailment, forced and terrible jokes and crappy dialogue, not to mention using it like he does.)


Now, to make this post a little schizophrenic, on to Domiology...


About the belly slits of Dominion Apes: I was wrong about the females.
This leads to a first theory of my own, by the way. We all know that the Dominion Ape relies on pheromones/attractants a lot more than, for example, a human does to communicate.
We also know that the orally ingested Mavpel at least amplifies these emitted substances.
Now, my theory is the following: These substances are produced by/during digestion, and released through the belly slit. Since female Dominion Apes also use their breasts and tear ducts (also used as mammary glands) to communicate, they don't need to emit that many chemical substances most of the time.
This theory might even shed some light on the disparaties between male and female Dominion Apes.

And, by the way, it could also explain the seemingly inexpressive or even nonsensical facial expressions Dominion Apes display sometimes - this just isn't as important for them.

“So you’re Jacob Deegan.”

“Do you people never knock?” He didn’t look up from his work; a mistake here could cost him hours of backtracking to make the body serviceable again.

“For you, Deegan? Hardly.” The woman’s voice was cold; she didn’t like him, and she didn’t want to be here. Unsurprising. Szark must have sent her, though – she was definitely not one of his brother’s puppets.

“Who are you?” The necromancer’s focus remained on the body before him.

“Snowsong, you pompous –”

“Let me guess,” he cut her off. “Your specialty is ice magic, and your spells are woven mostly though song, somehow – another bizarre specialized school of magic. No doubt you have some ultimate technique in which you summon lots of snow, sing like an opera star, and avalanche your opponents.”

“What?” She was caught off-guard for a moment. “No! I mean, ice magic, yes, and I sing, but those have nothing to do with each other –”

“Ah, the pseudonym is just self-indulgence. Makes sense, for one of Szark’s. Can you go now?”

“If Szark himself hadn’t asked me to come, I wouldn’t be here in the first place. He did, though, so… I’ve got to stick around.”

“Issues with necromancers?” He did turn, now, waving with his skeletal arm and grinning manically. “Or with undeath in general?”

“With you, Deegan. You’re no better than your younger brother, whatever Szark might see in you.”

“Fascinating. Then go back and tell them you failed to convince me.” There was something about her though… the necromancer couldn’t quite place it, try as he might.

“Barthis. The Chosen. Your first necromantic golem. You manipulated everybody – even Dominic Deegan himself, even if it was before his rise to power – for nothing but your own power, your own benefit. Give me one reason what you did was better than what he does now.”

“The Chosen? The outright evil cult of chaos? You have a problem with me tricking and killing off a few midlevel members? What, next you’re going to tell me that you were one of them?” The look on her face was enough to convince him – yes, she was one of them. And then it clicked – the feeling he couldn’t place was the shadowed look in her eyes. She had been ‘guided’ by Dominic. Yet here she was… “You were one of the Chosen. And Dominic used you. And now you’re with Szark. So… you were an idealist. You chose Chaos because you have a tragic past and blah blah blah. You survived the fall of the Chosen, Dominic found your past and idealism redeemable, and he begin to ‘guide’ you. Szark saved you from the Cathedral before you were totally gone, but you can feel it, can’t you? The will of my brother, trying to influence your thoughts, your actions.”

“You’re exactly like him. Manipulative, selfish, greedy… you think you know everything, you act like you understand everyone, like we’re all beneath you, and you try to control us, just like Dominic… go to hell, Jacob Deegan. You’d fit in quite well.”

The necromancer shrugged and returned to his work. “Go home, Snowsong. We’re quite done here.” For once, he heard the slamming of the door behind a visitor as she left.
