Default Grief In the Shell: Madokapunk FFRP OOC/Recruitment

    “What would you wish for?”
    -Neo-Mitakihara Billboard

    Magic is real.

At one point, this was deemed a shocking revelation. The sort of earth-shattering discovery to redefine the sum total of human knowledge in one fell swoop. Certainly, the first time the respectable young scientist now credited with the discovery made the assertion, he was laughed out of the conference room. Undoubtedly, it took a very peculiar breed of insanity to drive Kaname Tatsuya to devote the best years of his life to proving the existence of something so blatantly illusive. But in retrospect, it was inevitable, wasn’t it? If not him, someone else. It’s the twenty-first century. Nothing stays a secret, and once a magical girl agreed to actually demonstrate her powers, there wasn’t much room left for argument.

Of course, there were growing pains. There always have been, for any great change. There were panics. Cults. Military minds ground their gears at this revolutionary new ‘asset’, and the scientific community oscillated between trying to disprove this madness and gleefully smashing the great discoveries of the past with a sparkly pink thermodynamics-defying hammer. There was an exchange of missiles between some nations that really should have known better, but it luckily never escalated beyond the level of an embarrassing and costly mistake. A few cities were levelled. A few governments overthrown. A few movements for social change sprung up, and a few of those actually went somewhere.

But that’s the past! Eventually, once everyone had settled down enough to take a proper look at things, a new status quo emerged. Life revered to a semblance of normality, with just a few glitter-crusted footnotes to the definition of such. Things returned to normal - and then they got better. In the hands of the best and the brightest, magic has changed the lives of people throughout the world.

Near-limitless energy. An end to hunger. Artificial intelligence. Cures to the most diabolical of ailments. Technologies to better all mankind, to heal the wounds of the planet, to raise lives and spirits to unimagined heights, all made possible by a drop of magic to fudge the paltry limitations of physics. The wraiths - eternal enemies of humanity - are faced by magical girls who do battle in the light of day. Publicly-beloved heroines forged by fire in a network of common cause and backed by the full resources of some of the most powerful organizations on the planet, far removed from the lonesome warriors of a bygone era.

The year is 2096. And the wishes of humanity are coming true.

    IC Thread

Welcome to Madokapunk In The Playground, a FFRP inspired by and drawn from everybody’s favorite show about hope, friendship, and being murdered by your loved ones after succumbing to existential despair. Anyone is welcome, really, so if you're interested toss together a character sheet, ask any questions you might have, and you'll be good to post as soon as you get a stamp of approval!

When Kaname Madoka made her wish for a new world, she laid the foundations for a future built on hope, rather than despair. This is that world - a world in which there is no such thing as a ‘witch’, but the struggle of magical girls is still very real. It’s a world where the lines between magic and technology have been blurred, and humans and magical girls have united against the threat posed by the wraiths that beset them. To hear the news tell it, a threat that has been nearly eradicated.

And at the heart of this new world, Neo-Mitakihara - the shimmering jewel risen from the bombed-out husk of its predecessor. Headquarters to the Wishcraft Foundation, to Zeal Technologies, and other forerunners of the modern age. It’s a city of wide boulevards, sparkling water, and parks awash in emerald green. Of iridescent skyscrapers that shatter the light of dawn and dusk like a prism, and sleek highways that tie it to greater Japan and the wider world.

And maybe, a city that isn’t quite what it seems. But you already guessed that, didn’t you?

So who are you, anyway? As it turns out, almost anyone. You can be a magical girl, but you don’t have to be. Neo-Mitakihara is a sprawling, post-cyberpunk megacity, and even in this hub of all things magical, magical girls are still a tiny sliver of the overall population. While ‘freelancing’ is possible, and not every character needs a faction affiliation, for the purposes of narrative cohesion (and just having people to interact with), I’d encourage framing yourself as a member of one of the following groups, or thinking about how your personal narrative might intertwine with theirs.

    Spoiler: Factions 101
    Show
The Neo-Mitakihara Security Force upholds the law of the land, and protects the citizens of the shining city they call home - a difficult proposition in the face of not only honest-to-goodness magical girls, but eldritch technologies that defy analysis and put otherworldly power in the hands of whatever shmuck happens to stumble across them. What police departments of the old world might have blanched at as ‘Orwellian’ or ‘Extreme’ is often common practice by sheer necessity. Citywide surveillance, cybernetically enhanced officers, and offensive hardware and gadgetry (much of it privately donated) to put many militaries to shame give the organization the clout it needs to keep the tenuous peace in a world too good for the people inhabiting it. And in the most extreme cases, the NMSF can call on the handful of magical girls who have adopted the crusade for justice as their own...

The Wishcraft Foundation, founded by Kaname Tatsuya nearly seventy years ago in a humble garage and dedicated to supporting magical girls throughout the world, did more than survive the upheaval of the modern age - it thrived. What was once nothing more than a few online message boards and scattered safehouses has evolved into a monolithic entity with nearly every magical girl in the world somewhere on its ledgers. The Wishcraft foundation connects magical girls with teams, provides mentors to inexperienced members, and has tacit agreements with incubators to help them pinpoint new magical girls shortly after their wishes. But with the venerable founder ailing, all but vanished from the foundation’s direction, there are many who believe that a power struggle of epic proportions might be fermenting behind the unified facade. When the pressure grows too great to contain, who knows how the shockwaves might change the world?

Zeal Technologies was founded on the back of the Zeal Drive - the revolutionary device that marked the first truly successful breakthrough in practical manipulation of magic. The Zeal Drive is a source of almost boundless clean energy, transmuting mere grief cubes - the common detritus of wraith hunts and power source for magical girls - into enormous quantities of energy just waiting to be harnessed. Since the creation of that first ‘miracle machine’, Zeal Technologies has grown into an institution with power to rival many governments, and no home can really be called ‘modern’ without a few of their products. ZealTech labs recruit the best minds that money can buy, and a cajole the cooperation of a few that it can’t, delving ever deeper into the mysteries of incubators, magic, and even wraiths. All in search of world of Wishes Made Real - if you believe their slogan, at least.

...but while the factions have their own themes and goals, this is ultimately a FFRP, so how to interpret those is up to you! Neo-Mitakihara is going to shift over time as events rattle it, but player plots are still the focus.

How Do I Magic? A Brief Reminder.
For those who forget the rules of post-Madokami magical girls, or simply never saw the show.
    Spoiler: Magical Girl Info
    Show
Magical girls draw their magic from the power of an unearthly contract made with one of the Incubators roaming the world. In exchange for a pledge to battle Wraiths for what remains of their life, a magical girl is granted a single Wish. While the wish-granting abilities of the incubators are not without limits (in particular, wishes with sweeping, widespread consequences are generally denied outside of exceptional circumstances), wishes are granted in full appreciation of both their letter and spirit. While some might regret their choice later, none can say that they did not get what they wished for. From the moment the wish is granted, the contractee is a magical girl in full, granted her supernatural powers and lifelong mission.

Officially, that is the extent of the matter - a simple exchange of a promise in exchange for a wish and the power to fight on behalf of mankind. The censorship of the contract’s details is impossible to enforce, however, not the least due to the incubators’ refusal to lie outright if cornered by a direct question. Anyone even moderately interested (and willing to visit some questionable websites) can find the truth - that the process involves quite literally ripping out one’s soul, and binding it to a Soul Gem, without which the magical girl’s body will collapse like the reinforced meat-puppet that it is.

While every magical girl’s powers are unique, there are certain abilities common to all of them. Superhuman speed, strength, and toughness are the norm, as well as the ability to summon weapons and costumes at a whim, and an instinctual knack for fighting. Further, their soulless bodies are immune to age and disease, and repair nearly any wound in a single night’s rest. All these abilities, however - even simply animating their body - steadily taint a magical girl’s soul gem. The rate of this corruption increases proportionate to the scale of the magic employed, and is further amplified by negative emotions such as despair, hatred, or anger. This taint can only be cleansed through the use of grief cubes: small, clear fragments found in the remains of defeated wraiths. These cubes can siphon away a soul gem’s corruption, and incubators (or human researchers) are generally happy to dispose of them properly.

In the event that a magical girl’s soul gem is corrupted to a critical level, it shatters, slaying her instantly as the despair contained within is purged in a single moment. Among magical girls, this phenomenon is known as the Law of Cycles. Its origin is unknown, but many believe that without this final, merciful cleansing, the death of a magical girl would be doomed to bring about a terrible calamity.

Templates for character submission are below. You can run multiple characters if you like - really, just keep it reasonable, and don’t use alts to ‘gang up’ in RP scenarios.

[Name] (Lastname Firstname conventions are in effect as a default, though 2096 Japan is substantially more multicultural than it used to be)
    Spoiler: Template
    Show
Age: Self-Explanatory, though the average human lifespan has increased substantially. Long-time magical girls should also note the age at which they made their contract and halted their physical aging.
Gender: Self-Explanatory. Despite the name, male magical girls do exist - they are merely a severe minority.
    Height: Self-Explanatory
    Weight: Also Self-Explanatory

Faction: Which, if any, of the major factions your character might be affiliated with.
Rank/Station: Your character’s position within their faction, or relation to it if they are not a formal member.

Description: A physical description of your character. Be as sparse or detailed as you like, but you should have the basics.
History: A brief description of your character’s narrative up to this point in their life. As with description, there’s no need to write a novel here - the basic beats are fine.

For many individuals, whether human or magical girl, the following section will apply - though many magical girls shy from combat-oriented augmentations, finding them both invasive and inferior to their natural abilities in nearly all respects.

    Spoiler: Extra Template
    Show
Augmentations: On the cusp of the 22nd century, ‘human’ is, at best, a somewhat muddy term. For all but the most deprived individuals, genetic therapies, advanced medicine, and basic implants have raised the baseline for fortitude, intelligence, and appearance practically from birth. Common augmentations include computer implants, augmented reality visual overlays, and an immune system fortified against most diseases. More exotic ones often require substantial resources and extensive permits, but include everything from superhuman cybernetic replacement limbs to (extremely illegal) pheromone implants designed to manipulate the mood of those around their user.

For magical girls, the following section will also apply.

    Spoiler: Magical Girl Template
    Show
Wish: What was the wish that sealed your character’s contract? If you wish, you can spoiler this. For many magical girls, their wish is a very private piece of information.
Costume/Thematics: What is the unifying style for your character’s powers as magical girl? For most, the style of their costume and the aesthetics of their powers are tied to something for which the magical girl has a deep passion, with the nature of the wish playing a role.
Abilities: How does your character fare in their manipulation of the standard magical girl powers, and what additional abilities do they have? Like their thematics, a magical girl’s abilities are often tied to the nature of her wish and her personal nature, but they vary wildly. Be as detailed as you can here - while magical girls sometimes do discover new powers over their careers, this is comparatively rare.
Perception: How does the public view your character? Like it or not, in the modern age, most magical girls are (to some extent) public figures, and keeping out of the public eye is a rather exhausting endeavor. Some girls shy from the cameras, while others embrace them, but even the most timid of magical girls are usually showered with enough endorsement deals, sponsorships, and job offers to render personal finances for themselves and their family a non-issue.

Looking forward to whatever you come up with! Ideas for story elements, plots, or the like are welcome!

If you have anything sneaky you'd like to pull off that you'd like handled as part of one of these 'neutral' descriptions in order to not tip your hand by posting under your own name, shoot me a PM and I'll see about assisting the subterfuge!

    My first addition, pulling from something me and Sel talked about on IMs (it also ties heavily into my first character concept);

    The Magic War of 2031
    Spoiler
    Show
Though as of modern day magical girls (and boys) are accepted, promoted, and idolized, this was not always so. Near the end of 2030, the truth was revealed to the world, and at first, there were many mixed reactions. Naturally, many people were afraid of these powerful adolescents. So when a movement of well-meaning but short-sighted paragons began a string of politically motivated attacks, it was as lighting a powder keg.

The worst of it occurred in the countries of eastern Europe, where a targeted attack against a Russian president triggered a military response. The magical girls were not harmed in large number, but the collateral damage was substantial. And to complicate matters, when more magical girls began flocking to the idea of a rebellion, yet more joined the side of order. The bloody campaign lasted until March of 2033, when hostilities were brought to a formal close by the signing of the St. Petersburg Accord, marking the unconditional surrender of rebel forces. The majority of damage was done to the border countries with Russia; Ukraine and Belarus were hit the hardest, but isolated incidents (missile attacks) spread as far as Austria and the Czech republic.

The same war had a large boost in wraith activity in the area, and opportunistic incubators made many a contract during that time. Some magical girls from that era still live to this day, but a good few were cut down in the war or have died doing their duties.

And, edit as opposed to new post entirely:
    Nadica Novak
    Spoiler
    Show

    Age: 80 (body's age is 15)
    Gender: Female
    Height: 60in/152cm
    Weight: 91lb/41.2kg
    Faction: Zeal Technologies
    Station: Grade 1 Engineer
    Speech: #3399ff

    Description:
    Spoiler
    Show
In normal magical girl fashion, Nadica has not aged past the day she took her wish. A common 15 year old girl of european descent, she's quite pale (only exacerbated by her long stints indoors), making her stand out quite a bit in Neo-Mitakihara (the city does have a variety of cultures, but the japanese are still a majority). Her platinum blonde hair is almost even white in shade - though she often styles it with streaks of black, and her one good eye is a ocean-deep blue. She prefers light clothes, and is not against wearing dresses on some occasions.

What sets her apart from a large majority of 15 year old girls and other magical girls are her scars. Her right eye is burnt and scarred from shrapnel, and her left leg has been amputated (also an explosion). She's got assorted nicks, scars and burns across her body, usually hidden by clothing. Suffice to say, her status as a survivor of the Magic War is fairly easy to grasp from context. Whether she walks with a metallic prosthetic or drives her wheelchair is up to her mood (and her state of inebriation), and she usually has an eyepatch to at least spare the stares at the side of her face.

    Personality:
    Spoiler
    Show
To call Nadica abrasive would just be scratching the surface. To call her prickly would be a grave understatement. The list of people Nadica shows even a modicum of respect to is fairly small, and is mostly limited to her fellow scientists and engineers. To them, she can act somewhat close to friendly, but she is still a bit distant even given that.

To everyone else... she's condescending, rude, vulgar, and a laundry list of synonyms for "not very nice". She is very critical of perceived stupidity, and every word is laced with acerbic venom. If it weren't for her status as a member of the rich and powerful caste, she likely would have talked herself into a corner with no support whatsoever.

Psychologically, she has a fairly standard case of long-standing PTSD, pushing people away and suffering a vicious cycle of loneliness and yet not wanting to trust anybody. She smokes and drinks, just to add to the list of her self-destructive tendencies.

    History:
    Spoiler
    Show
Many girls (and boys) made wishes during or after the Magic War. Nadica was no different. Born to a Ukrainian mechanic who lost his job at a factory before the war, and bounced around to put food on the table for his sickly wife and infant daughter, Nadica Novak grew up scavenging for parts, food, and interesting things she basically substituted for toys. Though life was hard, she had plenty of love. Even after her sister Iskra surprised both of her parents, she had love to spare. But then... the world changed. She and her family knew naught how to react, but... really, how could it affect their lives?

Blood and fire. Light, smoke, and metal. Ash and screams. Nadica and Iskra's father died when the house collapsed, the product of misplaced cannon fire. Their mother, battling all her life with a frail constitution, couldn't survive the cold outdoors, leaving Nadica and her sister alone to fend for themselves. After Nadica stepped too close to a landmine, it seemed fairly bleak... if not for the appearance of a peculiar creature. With pure white fur and red eyes as a shiny bead or marble, it offered them a bargain. Iskra took it without hesitation to save her sister (but unfortunately, the Incubator seemed rather literal about his interpretation, and thus Nadica was not spared from her scarring). From there... Iskra joined the war. At first, she attempted to clean up after the reckless parties involved, wiping out the wraiths stirred up by the human suffering in the area. But then... she joined the rebels. Nadica watched in fear as her younger sister turned from protector to avenger, consumed by anger for her parent's deaths and sister's maiming. She might've survived if she listened to her sister, but Iskra wrote Nadica off as cowardly and not willing to do what it took to avenge their parents. Their way of life. They left off on a sour note... then Iskra never came back. Her cell of the rebellion was crushed by a particularly ruthless magical girl, her soulgem targeted and shattered.

Nadica was alone. Homeless. Hopeless. The war ended... and she hardly knew what to do. Again, the creature appeared, cajoling her for 'great potential', and eventually, she acquiesced. She wouldn't avenge her parents... she would build a world to prevent that sort of bloodshed from taking place again.

The next 60 years are a haze that people rarely truly get a feel for, but she was one of the engineers who helped build the Zeal Drive, and established Zeal Technologies to profit from the various uses of the versatile machine.

    Contract:
    Spoiler
    Show
Wish: "To build things. To build things that will make the world a better place, so this stupid war doesn't repeat itself."
    Thematics: Engineering, Fabrication, Machinery.
Costume: With two heavy fanciful mock-smith gloves, and an apron divided with a grid motif, all in navy blue with glowing white borders. Her amputated leg gains a high-tech, steam-powered prosthetic limb that works as well as any normal limb, if not better, and her useless right eye is graced with a metallic replacement, set in a metallic half-mask that sits on her face.
Abilities: The power to build, to form, purify, and shape metallic substances from minimal resources to nothing at all. Her weapons are largely those which she builds (which can take almost seconds), but in a pinch she can resort to using wrenches, hammers, or even guns amidst other mechanics' tools. She regularly resorts to building turrets that fire magical shots from her resevoir of energy.
Perception: Nadica is poorly received... mostly because of her treatment of other people, and the fact that she only hunts wraiths every so often, and only as a preventative motion to gather grief cubes. And even then, she is highly competitive and while she will not outright grievously harm other magical girls hunting the same quarry, she will not hesitate to play dirty to get what she's aiming for. Unfortunately, she is wealthy and well-connected by another means entirely, so she does not overly need to care about public image.

Just for the sake of clarity - yes, you can do this! There is a sharp gender ratio bias in magical demographics (and they still have to deal with the public perception of magica as a whole being extremely feminine), but magical boys do exist. Some of them even managed to score costumes with pants.

Her amputated leg gains a high-tech, steam-powered prosthetic limb that works as well as any normal limb, if not better.

We talked about this already, but this all still works. Huzzah for a character profile being posted! IC will probably go up once we have a few more of these, since it seems like there's at least some interest here.

I'm a bit hesitant on this, but I do shy somewhat from having too many concurrent backgrounds, particularly with something that rare and specific. If you really want to play a magical girl who survived the war, I suppose you could, but I'd definitely encourage finding other ways to tackle the concept. Even just a human veteran could potentially bring in a different angle.

If you want to be tied to a legacy of war as a magical girl, you could possibly hail from one of the regions most affected by it. A lot of the poorer, less stable regions of the globe suffered aftershocks from the conflict for decades, and while humanitarian projects have since stabilized many of those areas, aid has never been without its flaws. Several post-war regimes in small countries (and at least one large one) have only the sketchiest of legitimate claims to power, and ended up being propped up by well-intentioned but ill-informed magical girls and somewhat shortsighted gift-giving that put game-changing assets like Zeal Drives in the hands of whoever seemed like they could effectively restore order. Neo-Mitakihara might fancy itself a city on a hill, but even the tallest hill still casts a shadow.

I personally wouldn't mind. Nadica was a human survivor of the war until she took a contract, so even that isn't clear-cut. And there's any number of different ways to tackle the concept.

I had to think about this one for a while, but I'm going to have to go with Incubators not being playable currently. There are just so many weird implications that crop up with them, not the least of which being that there is probably only one incubator in Neo-Mitakihara under most circumstances anyway. Emotionless beings with a hive mind means there's a lot of ambiguity regarding how distinct they are anyway. At this point, I'd say that anyone can use an incubator as part of their story, but having one as an actual character is off the table.

Wraiths on the other hand are basically malevolent wild animals. They have some degree of eldritch intellect, but they're really just the accumulated malefic refuse bubbling up from the dregs of the collective human consciousness. Born of despair and negative emotion and existing to spread it, there isn't a ton of 'character' to be had with your average wraith. I'd say they fit into the same category as incubators - they are more of a plot element usable by anyone than a proper playable character group.

I have a few different character ideas, but this is a start. I went ahead and worked the Magic War into the character's backstory since it's become an important piece of the concept, but if there are still objections after that I can try to work around it. As always, criticisms are welcome.

    Leysa Shinsato, the Strongest Mashou

Age: 79 (Contract made at age 14, physical development is closer to 17-18).
    Gender: Female.
    Height: 5' 11".
    Weight: Classified.
    Faction: Wishcraft Foundation.
    Rank/Station: Consultant.
    Theme Song: Fireflight - Unbreakable
Address: Leysa is universally known by her first name and largely dislikes the use of her last name. She accepts it only in extremely formal situations.

    Description
    Spoiler
    Show

Leysa is a uniquely striking individual, standing abnormally tall for her gender and substantially taller than most inhabitants of Neo-Mitakihara. Her facial features are soft, an impression heightened by a constantly languid expression. Her green eyes are the only part of her face that is particularly memorable. Leysa has brown hair hanging past her waist, which is almost always kept in an extremely tight braid. Leysa favors loose, comfortable clothing, most often pants, a tank top or t-shirt, and one of her many jackets. Leysa always wears a pair of fingerless gloves over her hands all the way up her forearms, and will usually roll up her sleeves to her elbows. It's rare to see Leysa without the Wishcraft Foundation's logo somewhere on her clothes.

    History
    Spoiler
    Show

There is no public knowledge of Leysa's life prior to her enlistment on the side of order during the Magic War of 2031. Leysa quickly gained recognition after repeatedly taking on extremely dangerous missions and enemies, fighting at a pace that would have been suicidal for almost anyone else. While many of the Magical Girls that fought in the war did so reluctantly, Leysa seemed to revel in the violence and danger, remaining upbeat and acting as a pillar of moral support for her fellows. Her reputation was heavily different between the two sides of the war. The side of order saw her as a tireless, unwavering champion. The rebellion knew her as a brutal monster who left only rubble and pieces of her victims in her wake. Leysa was particularly infamous for leaving the body of mashous destroyed beyond recovery, condemning them to tortured existences trapped in their Soul Gems barring euthanization. In the modern era, however, this has been almost entirely forgotten over her reputation as a hero, due to the end results of the war and Leysa's subsequent activities.

Following the war's conclusion, Leysa vanished entirely; she was gone before the declaration of surrender had been publicly announced. While it was commonly believed that she had been killed just before the war's end, Leysa reappeared in late 2041 working for the Wishcraft Foundation.

Although technically classified as a consultant, Leysa was and is one of the Foundation's most senior members and generally works directly with the leaders of the organization. Leysa is the first choice for the Foundation's hand when they need to take action in a dangerous area, such as retrieving new magical girls from areas of violence or assisting with locations that have seen increased Wraith activity. Leysa also acts as a trainer and mentor for younger magical girls, generally ones with particularly dangerous or uncontrolled powers or serious attitude problems.

When not active working for the Wishcraft Foundation, Leysa acted as a contractor, both in disaster relief and for various military actions around the world. She was very picky about accepting jobs, choosing only to assist with situations that she saw as unambiguously morally justified. Leysa worked most commonly with Big Boss and FOXHOUND, periodically with the United Nations, and very rarely for any other group. Leysa, already a known face from the war, developed into a globally recognized hero over the next 40 years.

As far as personal life goes, Leysa met Shinsato Runa in the wake of the Desolation of Mitakihara while both were assisting survivors. The two became very close during the relief efforts and entered into a romantic relationship within the year. They were informally married in 2049. Five years later, they would adopt an orphaned baby named Michiko, an action driven more by Leysa than Runa.

The next decade was spent in relative happiness, but starting around 2065, Leysa's increasing absences began to take a heavy toll on her relationships with both members of her family. Leysa didn't want to be away as much as she was, but her extraordinary level of effectiveness meant that she was the best candidate for dealing with many problems, and she felt a duty to help as many people as possible. Ultimately, saving lives won out over her family. In 2067 Runa divorced Leysa and became the primary caretaker for the 13 year old Michiko. Shattered, Leysa threw herself even more heavily into her work, spending very little time in Neo-Mitakihara unless she was training other Mashou. She made some effort to maintain contact with Michiko, but their relationship became increasingly strained.

In 2072, Runa was killed by Wraiths during a regular patrol.

Leysa, out of the country and on a no-outside-contact mission with FOXHOUND, didn't learn about this until after the funeral.

When Leysa did return to Neo-Mitakihara and found Michiko, the teenager was irate. Venting all of her resentment and sadness, Michiko raged at Leysa for almost two hours, finally explaining that she had been accepted to an American legal school before disowning her surviving parent.

The day after Michiko left Japan, Leysa disappeared. She left no contact information and gave no warning. Because of her frequent absences, it was almost a month before anyone realized that anything was out of place. It would be 14 more before Leysa was seen again. When she did return, Leysa had changed. Her personality had grown increasingly high-strung over the past years, and now she maintained a much more relaxed air. Leysa had had a great deal of time to disconnect from and reevaluate her life. She stopped taking jobs that weren't for the Wishcraft foundation, taking on a more active role in the organization as a leader rather than a weapon. She also adopted a strict personal policy against killing humans, something that had never given her pause before. As Leysa spent more time in Neo-Mitakihara, Leysa began reaching out more to the people around her, solidifying a number of real friends out of a large number of acquaintances and professional relationships.

This is the state in which Leysa has lived her life for the past 24 years. While there are ups and downs as in any life, Leysa has been mostly content with her place. After a few years, she began sending periodic messages to Michiko talking about her life, hoping for but never expecting a response. Eight years ago, she received a surprise message from Michiko explaining that she would be in Japan on a business trip and wanted to meet in person. After a thoroughly awkward initial contact, Leysa and Michiko have slowly mended their relationship and are now active, if distant, parts of each others' lives.

Wish: "I want to be strong. So strong that nothing, and nobody, will ever make me helpless again."
    Thematics: Force, Juggernaut, Unstoppable
Soul Gem: A diamond in both shape and appearance, Leysa's Soul Gem is set into a simple red gold housing and is situated on the back of her right hand.
Costume: Leysa's transformed costume is a grey jumpsuit at base. Red lines cover the suit, emanating from a raised circle on her chest, terminating at raised ornaments at the wrists, neck, and ankles. A pleated half-skirt with two long tassels hangs from the back of her waist.
    Abilities:
Unique Capabilites: Leysa lacks, at first glance, the unique abilities present in most magical girls. What she does have is the standard physical modifications amped up to an insane degree. Leysa possesses immense physical strength far beyond that of ordinary augmentations; she has been observed lifting multiple tons of rubble and crushing diamonds with her bare hands. In addition to this, she is almost completely invulnerable to harm; heavy impacts and precise strikes alike simply bounce off her skin or fail to penetrate. Rather than a traditional weapon, Leysa possesses the ability to summon and throw large chunks of burning stone.
Generic Mashou Abilities: Aside from her inherent powers, Leysa has done little to develop general skills as a magical girl, although she has learned how to magically suppress her sense of pain. She has a firm grasp on the fundamentals of common Mashou abilities, but hasn't made any effort to improve beyond that, instead choosing to focus on honing her skills in other areas.
Military Training: Leysa is an experienced soldier, and has acquired a wide variety of appropriate skills on the battlefield. Stealth, weapons and demolitions training, wilderness survival, and battlefield tactics are a few examples.
Hand to Hand Expert: Leysa is an unbelievably skilled fighter. A firm believer in the philosophy of Jeet Kune Do, Leysa has studied dozens of different combat styles and tempered her vast theoretical knowledge with almost unparalleled experience. Most of Leysa's fights end before the opponent has a chance to react. Even without the extra abilities of a Mashou, Leysa would easily be a contender for the most skilled close combat expert on the planet.
    Full Explanation (Spoilers)
    Spoiler
    Show

Leysa's powers are actually a good deal more nuanced than they first appear, something that she has made efforts to conceal. While Leysa's brute strength is impressive, the true source of her power is extremely potent tactile kinesis.

Unstoppable Force: Leysa can channel immense force into the manipulation of anything she touches. It also prevents large objects from breaking off in her grasp and ensures that she doesn't actually need to have a solid grip on an object to carry it. The upper limits of Leysa's strength are unknown; she hasn't ever been unable to lift or break an object, but she has never comprehensively tested her abilities. Leysa's kinesis can also be used to generate push for Leysa as well as affecting external targets.

Immovable Object: Leysa's skin is automatically protected by her kinetic abilities, which form a perfect shield over her skin. This is extremely effective against physical attacks, but has a lesser degree of use against less tangible assaults. Light is a notable Achilles heel of this ability, as it is completely unaffected by the shield. Leysa's shield has three "settings," which she can switch between after a short delay.
Fudōshin: The setting that Leysa uses most frequently. In this mode, any physical attack that strikes Leysa is repelled with a counter-strike equal to the force put into the blow. Most weapons will shatter due to this effect, and bones will fare little better. Weaker strikes will simply be stopped cold.
Zanshin: The most situational of the shields. While in this form, Leysa's shield no longer stops attacks cold; while she herself is still protected from injury, she can be thrown around by impacts. Every attack that strikes this shield funnels into a pool of kinetic energy that Leysa can release at any time, adding the extra power behind her already considerable strength.
Mushin: While in Mushin, Leysa's shield possesses no unique effects. It has the highest defensive value of any of the shields, however, capable of blocking the few attacks that can harm Leysa through her guard as well as having a much higher effect on elemental or magical attacks such as heat or cold. This is the only setting that provides a noticeable defense against magic.

The Hammer: not one for complex names or secret techniques, Leysa nonetheless has a highly impractical ace up her sleeve. The Hammer concentrates all of Leysa's kinetics, both shield and strength, into a single hit. The raw energy behind this attack is enough to pulverize buildings or cause tremors for kilometers around, but burns Leysa out for a week afterward, negating all of Leysa's kinetics in their entirety for that duration.

Meteor Generation: Leysa's unique weapons are difficult to use effectively. When generated point blank, they move at relatively low speeds which reduces their usefulness despite substantial impact power. What makes Leysa's ability in this area unique, however, is her range. She can generate meteors up to 2 miles away if there is a free space large enough. She can use this to generate her meteors at sufficient height to allow them to gain speed. Additionally, smaller meteors can be easily accelerated and generated efficiently, but have lower overall power.

Superhuman Strength: Because of her wish, Leysa's strength even when in human form is far above what it should be; she can deadlift just over 1200 pounds at base. This strength can rise under certain circumstances; specifically, when Leysa is being physically restrained in some way and isn't strong enough to resist.

Mental Wall: Leysa possesses an inherent and absolute immunity to having her mental state altered in any way. She cannot be intoxicated, mind controlled, or hypnotized in any capacity.

Healing Factor: Leysa's healing factor works differently than most Magical Girls. While it will infallibly repair any wound that Leysa survives, and Leysa herself can survive injures that would cripple or kill even a Mashou, it works very slowly. The process can take anywhere from three days to a week to heal anything beyond light cuts and bruises.

Weaknesses: Although extremely powerful, Leysa's powers leave her with a number of exploitable vulnerabilities. First, Leysa is presently totally averse to killing other humans, even in self defense. Regulating her power output is extremely difficult, lowering her skill substantially when she won't go all out. This makes her vulnerable to both human assailants or being attacked in a space with many civilians. Leysa is also moderately vulnerable to attacks that alter the environment in some capacity, such as a vacuum or zero-gravity. Leysa's speed is mediocre. She can propel herself at high speeds, but can't change direction or maneuver when she does so, and her speed in hand-to-hand fighting is exceptional, but not above the ability of other Magical Girls to reach. Fourth, Leysa's barrier does have a limit to how much it can take. Sustained periods of high damage will wear down and eventually completely eliminate the barrier until she has had enough time to recharge, even in Mushin. Fifth, Leysa's use of magic consumes a large amount of energy and taints her Soul Gem abnormally fast. As a result, sustained combat is unfeasible. Finally, Leysa has few spontaneous, effective ways of dealing with opponents that can stay outside of her arm's reach.

Perception: Leysa is a generally popular figure in the public eye. A war hero from a conflict sufficiently distant to have lost its horror, Leysa is well known for being friendly and approachable as well as for her humanitarian work. Leysa neither shuns nor courts media attention, taking it all in stride. While she doesn't maintain any long-term relationships, Leysa has kept herself well-off through a string of product endorsements.

For terminology, "Mashou" (or the less neutral but still commonly used Mashoujo, or rarely-bothered-with Mashounen) is in fairly wide circulation, along with the simple "magica" or the wordier "mahou shouko/magical girl". Full-phrase 'Magical girl' is used the most in news reports and other formal situations, or when making a special effort to be polite. Magica is an older term that was mostly favored among magical girls themselves, but is a tiny bit 'old timey' now, originating pretty early in the 21st century. Mashou and its cousins are the default terminology of choice for the under-thirty set in particular.

Don't call a magical girl "Majo" though. 'Witch' is a pretty nasty insult from one mashou to another, and just cringe-inducingly out of place when used by anyone else. Nobody is totally sure where the term sprang up, but it originally had strong connotations of "You are absolutely bankrupt of all human decency and value, and death will be your only redemption". Nowadays it's just a really, really emphatic way of saying "I absolutely hate your guts, go die in a fire".

Heat and cold have reduced effects, but are not prevented entirely. Light based attacks are a particular Achilles' heel, as Leysa's barrier does nothing to inhibit light in any capacity. Leysa is also highly vulnerable to attacks that alter the environment in some capacity, such as a vacuum or zero-gravity. Third, Leysa's speed is mediocre. She can propel herself at high speeds, but can't change direction or maneuver when she does so, and her speed in hand-to-hand fighting is fast, but not exceptional by the standards of Magical Girls. Fourth, Leysa's barrier does have a limit to how much it can take. Sustained periods of high damage will wear down and eventually completely eliminate the barrier until she has had enough time to recharge. Fifth, Leysa's use of magic consumes a large amount of energy and taints her Soul Gem abnormally fast. As a result, sustained combat is unfeasible. Finally, Leysa has few effective ways of dealing with opponents that can stay outside of her arm's reach.

This looks good to me! Consider Leysa approved fully, looking forward to seeing her in action.

I've definitely heard magica before, but I think this is the first place I've heard Mashou. It was just me running with a something off the cuff idea of "Well, the term that's already around might as well be the 'older' one, while the one that just got coined would make sense as a more modern one". Also the mashup nature of it rings a bit more to me as the sort of thing that'd arise as a colloquialism in time, though that's just personal opinion.

Higher than it used to be!

Prior to being publicly known, in the early 21st century, there tended to be two big 'breakpoints' for magical girl casualties. The first was in the first month of duty, which tended to have a pretty high attrition rate - estimates are really hard to get from that era, but a lot of historians peg it as likely being as high as one in five magica that didn't even make it a full 30 days without dying. Actual death by wraith is actually a lesser killer in that bracket than death by soul gem corruption: lots of inexperienced magica with no idea how to manage their energies, combined with the tremendous stress and emotional shock of being place in mortal peril with no support system.

For those that managed to adapt though, life expectancy ran about 2-4 years on average, usually ending with either a personal meltdown or an encounter with an abnormally dangerous wraith. Or a normally dangerous one on a bad day. For those who managed to network with at least one other magical girl, those values climbed very quickly, but this was... less common than most would have liked. Rivalries and conflict over limited grief cube resources tended to be the more common result of contact between magical girls, though occasional stable alliances did appear from time to time.

Over the century though, as mashou have become more and more tightly networked and fewer and fewer girls and boys have been left to fend for themselves, life expectancy has climbed by leaps and bounds. It is still a dangerous job (in some parts of the world more than others), but working in teams is now the default, and a substantial support network of trainers, therapists, and emergency grief cube stockpiles - not to mention the furtive secrecy being replaced with fame and public adoration - has vastly driven down the casualty rates.

Considering that conditions are on an upward trend, precise values are difficult to come by, but if you've made a contract in the past fifteen years and live in a stable and developed part of the world, the odds are actually quite in your favor to still be alive. Maybe with a few nasty close calls, but drawing breath is better than not. Even twenty and thirty year veterans aren't outrageously uncommon (though still enough so to command a great deal of respect), though the numbers start dropping hard and fast after that point. The 50s were where the Wishcraft foundation really started coming into its own as a powerful organization with enough breadth and support to go around actively recruiting new magical girls rather than occupying a more passive role - something most attribute to both striking a deal with the incubators to alert them to new contracts and leveraging influence with several major governments in that timeframe.

I was actually considering an early 21st century veteran. Gone from mashou to soldier of fortune during the magic wars and then back from that. Basically ancient, but made it a point to stay low-key enough that people think he's been dead for a while, and/or was probably Wishcraft propaganda at a certain point.

Are we going to have anyone under 60? I mean, it's a fun idea, but I am starting to get very slightly worried that so far, 100% of the proposed characters are veterans/survivors of a specific military conflict over six decades ago. I know, small sample sizes and all that, just something to keep in mind? I'm not putting a limit on it or anything, but it'd feel slightly odd if we had too many people from that time period?

Still, looking forward to seeing whatever you come up with, and I'm sure any imbalances will eventually level off.

Whatever other manifold faults they might possess, incubators almost always grant wishes in the full spirit and intent of the request. They're not 'evil genies' out to twist or misinterpret instructions. So a wish to avoid notice would likely result in exactly that - nobody picking up on the girl unless she's actively drawing attention to herself, or someone is actively looking for her in particular. Never called on in class, never picked out of a crowd, never singled out positively or negatively. Magical girl powers from such a wish would very likely revolve around hiding - stealth and invisibility being likely, with the suite probably extending into other mundane forms of detection such as heat detection or motion sensors.

I'm maybe kind of interested? I like a lot of you yahoos who are looking to play here. And the premise intrigues me.
As with BITPRR I can't promise super-regular posting for a while. But I'll be around, if nothing else.

    As for my idea...
If it's too "out there" just say so.
But I was thinking a member of the police/NMSF. Who's younger (well, like, 20s to 30s, but compared to some of these ideas!). NOT a magical person. Instead, he's a cyborg of one flavor or another. Who at minimum uses fun technomagical gear, if not straight-up powered armor (if that's an option).
And, uh, is a ginger Scotsman. Who often wears a kilt (in deference to this not being Scotland he almost always most of all the time wears track shorts or the like under it.
I could see him being the sort of sort-of-crazy cop who gives Draken's Police Chief Leonardo Gomes Inoue a few headaches.

Rio looks like a fairly normal japanese girl, the only exception being her hair is closer to dark-mid brown than black, resting just at her shoulders. However, she is a bit tall, thin, and gangly for her age. She normally wears fairly neutral colors, when not dressed in formal clothes.

    Personality:

Rio is fairly quiet, but not silent; though can be fairly spacy or distracted while conversing with others. At times she can say odd or inappropriate things in conversation, and can be fairly blunt or straightforward in certain situations where more subtlety is called for, but she never means offense or harm by what she says. Overall, she is fairly kind and a little naive (more a product of her stay-at-home dad than her mother), having an admiration for strong and brave individuals, rooted by her attachment to her dog, Kin. She and the canine practically inseparable, the old former-service dog following her around even in some places where it's not necessarily acceptable.

    History:
    Spoiler
    Show
Born to a fairly affluent family, Rio was diagnosed with a mild form of autism at a young age. As a successful entrepreneur and businesswoman, her mother took this as a challenge as opposed to a disability or handicap, and just about planned out a program to push Rio into a socially acceptable and productive adult. It's had challenges and issues, but Koizumi Chiyo could afford a wide array of options, which certainly helped.

One such option was having a service animal registered to Rio. At age 6, her parents got Rio a year-old German shepherd, with all of the paperwork and other details taken care of, such as service dog training. If it weren't for the lovable and protective canine, Chiyo's program might have fallen through, but Kin (nicknamed by Rio for his "golden" fur, which she will not accept as anything but the truth) helped to guide Rio along the milestones due to her affection for him.

Wish: "I want this to end, just... like it never happened."
    Thematics: Compassion, Healing, Friendship
Costume: A white hooded robe with red triangles around the end of the skirt (which ends at her upper thighs). Her soulgem rests on a ribbon on the collar. Her "weapon" is a fairly simple wooden staff with a crook.
Abilities: Rio's abilities are odd, being entirely magical in nature, and having little offensive bite. However, she is a very efficient and effective healer, and she can channel her energy into highly effective "buff" skills, empowering even normal mortal beings to be able to fight wraiths.
Perception: Well, she just started her career, but her wish reversed the damage of a horrific bombing, so she's off to a good start!

Cybernetics are definitely a thing, and a fairly common one at that, to varying extents. Power armor is not exactly stand issue, but it does exist, and the NMSF gets fair mileage out of it when cracking more dangerous nuts. The organization honestly blurs the line between police force and a full-blown military, due in part to the jobs it has to tackle. Neo-Mitakihara has a public surveillance system that borders on the outright Orwellian, making small-time crime almost a nonissue... all while the modern technological revolution has led to a massive wave of contraband technology, leaving genuinely dangerous criminal elements equipped with fiendishly advanced technology. When a yakuza bust might put officers toe-to-toe with an honorbound lunatic capable of outrunning a squad car with cybernetic legs or cleaving one in half with a nano-edged katana, rolling in with tanks and power armor doesn't sound so unreasonable. Whatever it takes to keep the peace.

True 'magical technology' almost universally runs off of power supplies that require grief cubes to maintain. It does exist, but the immense value of grief cubes (they both fuel the city's power plants and keep magical girls from dying horribly) caused the NMSF to phase out production and supply decades ago, as magical girls became a more trusted part of the city's fabric. Nobody can deny that magical weapons and armor are effective - they can actually hurt wraiths, and conventional defenses offer vastly diminished protection against a blast of magic compared to a bullet or missile - but economic realities just make armaments an inefficient use of grief cubes. Leave the wraith-hunting to the magical girls, goes the thought process. Some musty stockpiles still exist, but the force has come to favor the much more economically sustainable doctrine of gee-wiz gadgetry and overwhelming firepower in the face of assorted criminal elements.
