I have, today, seen the film "The House With A Clock In It's Walls" and it was... a fascinating thing, to be sure.

It had some of the best nuanced, subtle storytelling and cinematography I've seen in awhile... and then twenty minutes later in a brutally stupid scene all but spell out the subtle thing they just did previous. It's got some really good, snappy dialogue, followed by some pretty terrible dumb **** comedy courtesy of Jack Black who is trying his best. The acting is... decent at best for the most part, and the villain has the utter failure of being just not hammy enough for an obviously intended to be hammy role.

Cate Blanchett steals the show of course, but even she's kinda low energy at times, which is just a shame. But that's the film in general really. It's very disjointed in terms of quality, and as such is a disjointed experience.

I would say all paladins are knights, or destined to be knights, but not all knights are Paladins. I just watched "Last Knights" on Netflix and it is a good example of what I just said. In fact, I got on line to say that it was a great movie!

For what does it matter? Unless you're using a rules-based definition of what a knight is, we'll have to determine that first. If by knight you mean someone who is granted the title by a person in power in exchange for their service as a soldier, they can be, but don't have to. If you mean a cavalry soldier who fights in heavy armour, they can be, but don't have to.

Unless there are specific rules for being a knight, I guess the short answer is "some are, but not all".

    It's slightly complicated.

Paladins, as conceived in the early editions of Dungeons & Dragons, are the truest expression of the ideal of the knight in shining armour, just, true, and fighting for what is right and proper even when that's not technically legal. This is complicated by 4e turning Paladins into 'warriors of faith' (an archetype I prefer to call the Templar), who were essentially the militant arm of their faith and empowered by their god with divine powers, sorry that's clerics, Paladins are the militant arm of their faith and empowered by their god with divine powers...

Did I mention that several classes in D&D embody incredibly similar archetypes? Don't get me started on Clerics/Warlocks.

Anyway, we have now established that Paladins are supposed to take the narrative role of knights, at least before 4e changed them and 5e made them into something? Seriously, the 5e fluff seems to be torn between the old Ideal Knight archetype and a more generic Oathsworn Warrior archetype, with only the Devotion Paladin truly filling the role of the former. At least they're meaningly distinct from Clerics now.

But that doesn't mean they have to fill the social role of the knight, which is to be rewarded by the monarch for making a great contribution to British culture gather soldiers and fight in times of war. In fact many paladins don't fulfil this role, being more knight errant than landed knight, wandering the world righting wrongs, which makes this even more complicated.

In essence, a Paladin is a knight if they can call themselves Sir/Dame due to being given the title by a lord. There's technically no other requirement, although particular worlds and realms might have a vast array of duties for knights.

As a side note, in Basic D&D Paladins and Knights (as well as Avengers) were explicitly different things. A Knight swore fealty to a lord and got a number of social benefits, while Paladins and Avengers were associated with churches and got divine powers but few social benefits.

Spent the weekend at the Finnish Vidcon equivalent reaching out to kids, young people and parents about internet safety and about the web based youth and children's work we have to offer by the organisation. Especially the guides for parents about children's use of the internet as well as gaming were pretty popular, and we only had a couple of angry WE ARE FINE WITH INTERNET SAFETY >:(( comments from passing parents. In fact, you know the entire 'autism obsession' thing? I have a rather broad range f knowledge because I'll occasionally take a break from gaming and spend six hours to two weeks researching something, and while I'll forget 90% of it some of it will stay. Which means I probably know more about the female reproductive system than most men.

I wish somebody had actualy explained internet safety to me when I was a kid. To be fair, I think my dad would hvve done if he had any idea how bad my school's teaching of it was. Seriously, why would anybody dismiss people trying to explain something that people don't bother to teach?
