Gojira really weirded me out at first too - then I listened to an entire album and it just seemed to click. Now I'm addicted.
That was a solid song, and I should listen to more, but I've already got so many songs I want to buy...

Nothing whatsoever. I like Amaranth a lot, and I actually spent two hours last night listening to Whispers (the other one I linked) on loop. I was contrasting two extremes: extremely accessible and beautiful songs, and poorly produced black metal. In retrospect, my wording suggested that I hate pretty and pop-y metal, which I do not. I prefer angrier stuff most of the time, but light and cheerful has its place.

Interesting... (doing peace mosh).
I'm the only one who, listening to the part after 4:17, thought to In Flames' style in "Reroute to remain"?

So last night I saw Vader, and the five bands that opened for them. I shall now type up a rather un-brief description of it, describing how cool it was. For a short summary, scroll to the bottom.
Swashbuckle
So I walked into the venue after these guys had played about a third of their set. I looked at them, and was in awe. They were all dressed like pirates, and had a palm tree on the stage. In the pit there was a guy (presumably with Swashbuckle) dressed as a shark, moshing. After quickly buying some merchandise (which I shall describe later), I went down and enjoyed the show. These guys are very entertaining live. Instead of getting the crowd to go "Hey! Hey! Hey!" they had us chanting "YO! HO! YO! HO!". Overall, it was quite entertaining.
Augury
This band started being fun before they even started playing. During their sound check, the venue was playing Nightwish songs from Dark Passion Play over the speakers so loudly, that they couldn't hear their instruments well enough to judge the sound quality. They kept yelling desperately that the music should be turned down. Eventually, when the venue either ignored them, or just didn't hear them, they started dancing around like it was pop music. Much of the crowd joined in. Eventually, they got going. They played some very good progressive death metal, and as a reward for being such a good crowd, they graced us with an amazing bass solo. Overall, quite good.
The Amenta
This band certainly was weird. I didn't catch the beginning of their set, because I had seen Peter Wywczarek, and gone over to talk to him (in Polish!). But I quickly got back, and I was very entertained by them. They all looked fairly strange, with their faces lightly blackened by facepaint, the singer with his rather awesome leather boots and silver wolf-head belt buckle. They seem to be some sort of industrial death metal. I'd never heard of them before, but I'll definitely check out more of their stuff soon.
Warbringer
Now this was probably the most entertaining part of the show during the night. Earlier, while Swashbuckle was playing, I had met and talked with their vocalist. Now, I had managed to get a spot right up in front against the stage (no barrier), so I had an excellent view. They started off with 3 songs on their new album, and kept kicking ass from their. They all were really into the music. One of their guitarists, John Laux, was so close to me I could have probably plucked his strings for him if I had wanted to. John Kevil (the vocalist) was a maniac, headbanging and jumping around. At some point the drummer from Swashbuckle ran on stage, and stage dived. John Kevil responded by saying "Yes, stage diving pirates are awesome! Arrrrr!" Later, Kevil stage dived himself, and was placed back on stage headfirst in a position that looked painful. Still, he got back up and managed to awe the whole crowd with how metal he was for the rest of the set.
Decrepit Birth
There's not too much I can really say about these guys. While these guys played, I rested up a bit because I had worn out my neck and voice during the last 4 bands, and I still needed all my headbanging power for when Vader came on. So I just stood and watched. They seemed to be fairly good death metal. They had live presence, and to a fan they probably would have very fun. I managed to catch a pick from the bassist, so I put it in my wallet so I wouldn't lose it. Then....I lost it. Feel kind of stupid about that.
Vader
And now for the headlinging band. Really, they were simply fantastic. They played great songs, had lots of energy, nailed all the solos, Hyped up the crowd really well. A near perfect performance. Except for 2 issues. The first was that for some reason Peter's vocals were really low into the mix, so you could barely hear his growls. This was rather annoying. The other issue was that since there were a total of 6 bands playing that night, Vader's set was rather short, and they didn't get to play as many songs as I wish they would. Still, they played some of my favorites such as Sothis, Silent Empire, and This Is The War, so I was overall happy with it.
So that was the show. A bunch of pictures can be found at this site. I can be seen in quite a few of them. I'm the guy with short brown hair, a skeletonwitch shirt with a vivid blue design on the front, and a wristband with a bright green Municipal Waste logo on it.
Also, I got a Vader tour shirt, a Vader patch, a Warbringer patch, and a Vader pin.
Is it just me or does Only for the Weak Sound better live? I just bought the Album version from amazon and I think the vocals sound dozen times better live.
Edit: DragonPrime, that sounds like good fun. I think there is a chance I might end up going to a concert in the next three weekish because, unless something happens, my brother will be playing.
Of course, he hardly even has a band (regular members? Ermm... 2... ) but hey, they have a kickass guitarist, so that's saying something. Now all they need is a decent drummer (with a kit. No mean feat in a crowded city like this) and a bassist who they can practice with regularly.

Short Summary: It was quite good.
You saw Vader? DAMN YOU!
Man, I haven't been to a gig since May, that's far too long.
On a side note, I'm trying to learn this song. It's frustrating because it has three guitars but I have no one else to play it with, so I'm attempting to sort of blend them all into one as best as I can.
So, Behemoth charted at #56 (billboard) a while ago. And just recently they had a semi-large feature in Guitar Weekly (I think it was in GW... Don't recall precisely).
What's with Death getting big in the US all of a sudden ? Not complaining, though .

From what I can tell, Behemoth's fanbase is a mix of kids trying to be totallies brutals, and people who recognize how awesome they are.
I'm guessing that death metal is getting more popular because of metalocalypse and the general brutality of the world.

My old German professor said that Bavaria was essentially the German equivalent of the U.S. "deep south". Not sure if this is accurate, but if it is, it could explain a lot.
If you can get your hand on any Templestowe then they come Klose recommended

All I had heard from these guys was "codex necro"...looks like I've got some listening to do!
Damn right you do >_>
Actually, the band is freaking hilarious. On some of there songs (I think there first ones?) they stole some audio from some movies >_>. I think the movies were... Event Horizon, Hell raiser, and... 1984?

Essentially this. Bavaria is the most conservative, backwards part of germany, and somehow (I'll not go into detail here, forum rules and all that) the manage to dictate a lot of BS to the rest of us.
On Topic: New Hypo? Damn, this has completely snuck by me...

I'm not going to call myself some sort of hardcore fan (I 'discovered' Behemoth about a year ago) but you're right. This is usually why my support of bands is quite silent, unless I think somebody will actually be interested in them- I'm afraid of being lamped in with the people who are, for lack of a better and more constructive word, posers. ( I hate using that word. It makes me feel so elitist.)
Can't help but bring up Behemoth when one of my friends, who's an avid Slipknot fan, claims that Slipknot are "so effing heavy". Behemoth are a great example of a band who can pull of being weirdly melodic and yet at the same time skull-crushingly heavy. I guess its mainly down to the studio wizadry, and they don't go for the same 'buried in distortion' sound that bands trying to be unbelievably heavy go for.
I like dipping my toes in black metal, as it were, rather than immersing myself in it. And, er, there's a sentence I'd never thought I'd say. That's pretty much why I like Behemoth- they're a nice middle ground. I love the death metal sound, and love black metal themes, but dislike the black metal sound for the most part. It's one of those matches made in heaven for me.

I have returned from Heathenfest! Here's my review
Kivimetsan Druidi: These guys were the first openers and I came in during their alst song. They sounded good based on the little bit I heard, and my friend who got their before me said they were pretty awesome.
Vreid: These guys were really damn good. They got people moshing really quickly despite being an opener which is a pretty impressive feat, and just played awesome in general. The sound quality was really good (well as good as you want it to be for Black Metal I suppose), and everything was played really well, and they were a fun band to watch.
Alestorm: Does Alestorms live performance really need any review? As with last time I saw them they were hilarious, played really well, and a huge crowd pleaser. The entire crowd was singing along to "Nancy the Tavern Wench" and "Wenches and mead", and there was tons of moshing and crowd surfing for "Wolves of the Sea". Also as per usual, Dani Evans and Chris Bowes were around before and after their set to talk to people in the audience which was cool.
Belphagor: These guys were in my opinion the weakest of the 5 bands that played. Maybe it's just that I don't like brutal deathmetal, or that their singer sounded eerily similar to what I imagine cookie monster would sound like if he had turrets, but It just Didn't work for me. They did however have an awesome light show.
Eluveitie: It was great to see these guys headline a tour after seeing them open a while back. They played all the songs really well, and head everyone headbanging through the whole set. Unfortunately they didn't play anything from the acoustic album because Anna Murphy had a cold, but the set was awesome nonetheless. The micing for the Flutes and pipes was pretty good, but unfortunately you couldn;t hear much of the hurdy gurdy as it basically had sound issues for the entire gig. All in all though, they were awesome headliners.

I'll have you know that Belphegor is blackened death, not brutal death! Hooray for subgenre nitpicking!
So a friend came by with his netbook yesterday and I got a bunch of new music.
Lamb of God: Boring. Seriously, boring. Yes, they have good guitar work, but the vocals bore me. This doesn't strike me as heavy or brutal at all (In comparsion to bands like As I Lay Dying, Demon Hunter, In Flames, Amon Amarth) yes, they used Low-end sounds, but it doesn't... have energy or something
Kreator; Sorry, I'm not a Thrash fan. I listened to the first track from the album he gave me (Enemy of God) and I turned it off.
In Flames; I now have most of Clayman some of Jester Race, Whoracle and all the albums past Clayman. THESE GUYS ARE AMAZING!!!!11!!ONE!!!! That is all.
I also got bits of Dark Tranquility, some Buckethead (is he even metal? Its amazing though) some Megedeath (I expect to not enjoy this so much. I'm not a Thrash fan) and more Iron Maiden. Oh, and Children of Bodom. None of this have I listened to do, but I intend to do so soon. First I need to listen to In Flames a dozen times.
I'm afraid of being lamped in with the people who are, for lack of a better and more constructive word, posers. ( I hate using that word. It makes me feel so elitist.)
As stupid as this sounds, if you are concerned about being called a poser, you almost certainly are not a poser.

What black metal bands have you heard? Its a really diverse genre, so there will probably be bands that you like. How bout Emperor? They were my first black metal band.
