Default Family Crests conundrum

Google searching has turned up two different crests for my surname. Is there a way to find out which one is the right one, or would they both be right?

Found one site that does them as dog-tags (because I'm actually that much of a dork ) and I wanna get the right one. Family itself is being no help at all in this matter. My mum's dad has theirs on the wall, but my dad (and as such my name) is useless

Well find out about where these crests came from. Find the overall history of them, and such things. Try to see which one matches more closely to your family history. That's probably the one that you need to get.

Two for your name? Lucky guy.
Really, around here, most families have one. Depending on where you are from, one given surname can have two dozen different crests, especially with common names. If you don't know which one is yours, no chance. We found ours by going through old documents from my great-great-grandfather.

If you're just basing it on having the same last name and not being a direct descendant of the people who originated the crest, then it's pretty absurd. I mean, it's hardly like everyone whose last name is Stewart can automatically trace their way back to the House of Stewart. From what I'm reading, it's even pretty tacky (or, in the UK, actually illegal) to display a crest if you're not actually the Duke of Suchandso.

Both Irish, and both come from the same area of Ireland weirdly. I shall continue my endeavour.

If it's a Celtic area crest, it's quite possible that one is the Badge and one is the Crest. Can you post pics? Otherwise it's possible that the crest evolved, or one is the later English adaptation of it.
I reccomend posting pics just to show it off. I'm quite proud of my family badge and crest, they're cool

We have three green hills and a golden star.

Not really that cool.

Actually, it is a Victorian myth that "family names" have arms. Individual families have arms, but that doesn't give the right for anyone of that name to use them.

Yeah, only if you are entitiled to a crest should you lay claim to it. And if you are entitled to it, you will be able to trace direct lineage to the person it was issued to, which should answer your question. Geneological sites should help

If you just want one and don't care about truth, historical accuracy and such, pick which ever one is cooler, you'll be stealing someone else's crest anyway.

The site I got this pic from actually answers the crest/CoA question. Left red one is the coat of arms, and the green is the crest.

I will look into this in more detail, any site suggestions Adlan?

Erm, that isn't right. The coat of arms is the shield in the centre, the crest the object above it. So in your post you have two coat of arms and two crests.

I would honestly question the site that said that. See the FAQ in my above post.

Perhaps looking into this in more detail would be a good idea. I shall ivestigate once my essays are done.

Thanks all.
