Re: Your favorite Marvel film
That's not a paradox, just an oxymoron.
I don't think there are many outright bad movies in the MCU oeuvre, but there are a couple, mostly Phases 1 and 2. Considering the number of films it's had, the relative quality is, I think, pretty impressive. Not many film franchises run to over 20 films, but of those that come to mind, the MCU has a significantly better average quality than Bond, Carry On or Godzilla. There have only been about half as many Star Wars films, but it bears comparison because of the TV series, and the MCU knocks it out of the park in terms of consistent quality.
It's easy to hate, but the MCU is really rather remarkable.GITP Blood Bowl Manager Cup

Re: Your favorite Marvel film
Because it has over 20 films? No. No! NO!
Can we drop this notion once and for all? Yes I hate the MCU. Yes you are entitled to like it. But can we drop the notion the MCU is somehow impressive because there's over 20 films, and there's been over 20 films in the span of about 10 years.
Success does not equal quality. There are plenty of great films that bomb, and plenty of horrible films that make a lot of money ensuring several sequels. If success and quality were the same thing every fast food restaurant would have gone out of business long ago.
There are other aspects to consider if something is successful, good, or right. To summarize a broken clock is right twice a day.

Re: Your favorite Marvel film
Yeah quality is subjective especially here. Every film can be summed up by "evil bad guy person wants to kill a bunch of people and hero good guy protagonist man has to punch the bad guy a bunch of times."
What's your point? I have a bowel movement every day. The average let's player puts out over two hours of content on a weekly basis.

Re: Your favorite Marvel film
And it's been thoroughly entertaining to read it here every day.
Also, at least one MCU movie breaks even your excessively vague and generalized "cliche"--the protagonist doesn't win by punching the antagonist repeatedlySpoilerby pretty much forcing the bad guy to murder him repeatedly until he realizes he has better things to do.Last edited by Xyril; 2019-05-16 at 02:39 AM.

Re: Your favorite Marvel film
I'm pretty sure I've answered this before, but why not.
Top movie, Doctor Strange. Visually stunning and massive bonus points for having the final boss not defeated by punching him really hard, but by an actual plan. And actual self-sacrificing heroism instead of "I punch harder" heroism, combined with tactical intelligence and creative use of powers.
Second: Ragnarök. Just fun and high energy throughout. A few missteps, mainly in the "mood whiplash" department, where they had to make jokes in every scene, even while people were dying.
Worst movie: First Avenger. Just thoroughly dull.
Most of the other movies are generally okay, some better, some worse. I generally like the Thor and Guardian movies, for more creative world building and visuals, and dislike the straighter more down to Earth ones, though I'm also not too fond of Captain Marvel and Black Panther. Age of Ultron was a giant wasted opportunity, an evil AI could be so much more interesting than a semi-endless swarm of drones and a bad take on Asimov. Iron Man 2 I barely remember, so it must have been quite boring too.
What I'm generally missing with the Marvel Movies is people who use their powers for more than just violence, and more creative use of existing powers. And they could go so much further with embracing their crazy setting. I'm fairly confident we won't get to see the first two.Last edited by Eldan; 2019-05-16 at 04:02 AM.

I've enjoyed the hell out of the MCU, but my favorite to this day remains the very first of the bunch: Iron Man.

Also, Loki's probably still the funniest memorable villain. Maybe Ultron. (not-coincidentally, both Whedon films)

Re: Your favorite Marvel film
The sorting app that the OP mentioned made this list for me. Do note that I have not seen all of the newest MCU-movies yet (working on it!). So, selecting any of those movies that I have not yet seen instead of the movies that I have seen, would be faulty reviewing. You can't have an opinion of a film that you haven't seen yet.
1. The Avengers (I would have questioned the tech if this wasn't Number One)
2. Iron Man (It all started here. Still holds up.)
3. Avengers: Endgame
4. Avengers: Infinity War
5. Captain America: The First Avenger (Cap...
6. Captain America: The Winter Soldier (... has...)
7. Thor
8. Captain America: Civil War (... the best trilogy. Also? This is like Avengers 2.5.)
9. Thor: Ragnarok
10. Guardians of the Galaxy (Surprised to see a good superhero-movie with characters that *even I* had never heard of before)
11. Doctor Strange (Refreshing film, even though Strange seemed to be channeling Stark at times. Maybe he was a fan of Stark as MD?)
12. Avengers: Age of Ultron (Worst ensemble cast-movie, hands down.)
13. Iron Man 2 (Eh. It's entertaining.)
14. Spider-Man: Homecoming (Good movie but I'd like to see adult Spider-Man. Spider-Man was a teenager in the 60's. )
15. Captain Marvel
16. The Incredible Hulk (The second step MCU took was kind of a stumble)
17. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
18. Thor: The Dark World
19. Ant-Man (Gimmicky fun but gimmicks nonetheless)
20. Iron Man 3 ("I'm the real Mandarin, blargh!" Way to go, ruining the 10 rings-plot set in the first movie. Also, not enough armor-heroics and the armors used seemed to be made of balsawood, cheap plastics and stuff like that)
21. Ant-Man and the Wasp
22. Black PantherSignatures are so 90's.

Re: Your favorite Marvel film
Original poster mentioned it. I tried it out of slight curiosity and boredom. What was surprising was that it made a list that I could agree with: Top 10 was something I would have put together. Not that I've ever tried to make "Top X MCU-films"-list. Truth be told, I had to switch places with The Incredible Hulk and Spider-Man: Homecoming. I don't agree that Hulk-movie is better than Homecoming.
Even more surprising was the fact that trying this app to sort movies made me a 100% grade-A badass. Right after I made the list, I casually offhand-backhanded the lights out of a sneaking ninja and made a snappy oneliner.Last edited by Raimun; 2019-05-24 at 06:29 PM.

Re: Your favorite Marvel film
That does seem to generate a pretty accurate list. Here's mine:
The Avengers
Avengers: Infinity War
Guardians of the Galaxy
Avengers: Endgame
Thor: Ragnarok
Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
Avengers: Age of Ultron
Doctor Strange
Iron Man
Spider-Man: Homecoming
Thor
Captain America: Civil War
Captain America: The First Avenger
Ant-Man
Black Panther
Thor: The Dark World
Iron Man 2
Ant-Man and the Wasp
The Incredible Hulk
Iron Man 3
Captain Marvel
I still haven't seem Captain Marvel yet though.

Re: Your favorite Marvel film
The problem with the list, of course, is that it doesn't take into account how long it is since you've seen the movie. The movies in the list that I like most are those that I have readily available and so watch more frequently. When given a choice between a movie I haven't seen in a couple of years and one I saw last month, I'm more likely to choose the one I haven't seen in longer, even if I prefer the other one. And those that I don't have available to watch on demand at all, like Endgame, become more attractive in abstract for that reason.
This generated a couple of strange results for me, as while there are no MCU movies I actively hate and wouldn't pass up watching again all things being equal, some of those that I'm not particular fans of cropped up oddly high in the list, just because I went "oh yeah!" and clicked on that. As time went on I tried to correct for this but that probably just led to further distortion.
Similarly, if there are any you haven't seen, you probably need to decide whether you're going to treat that as a consistent "yes" or consistent "no", just so it doesn't distort other results, and then disregard its eventual position.GITP Blood Bowl Manager Cup
