Playground book club Do Not vote unless you are a member of this club
All Right this is the official Giantitp book club Group. Here we will read and discuss books that we read together. Anyone can join, just leave a message here, or PM me. PM me for any questions you may have.
If you want to recommend a book, please send me a message and give me a link to a description of the book and a place where we can download the pdf. (if its legal) People can also buy or borrow the books if they want. The PDF iis just for the people who might not be able to find the book.
Right Now I am taking suggestions
Suggestion rules:
1: Please keep the books relatively safe. Like no erotica or anything with heavy amounts of sex. It is ok if they are mentioned. Just as long as the book does not go too in depth in it.
2: Please do not recommend books that are antireligious, proreligious, or have any kind of political agenda. Remember, we are on giantitp still.
3: Please only recommend ONE book for reading. After the group finishes the book, then you may recommend another one, but not until everyone is finished with it.
I will release the options for the books on sunday, October 4th so we can vote on them then. I will close voting on Wednesday October 7th and we will read the book that gets the most votes.
Here are the current books we are voting on. And please, only members should vote

Re: Playground book club?
A book club is a group of people who all read the same books at a similar pace and who get together and discuss the book.

Re: Playground book club?
I'd be fairly interested in this, but I guess it depends on what kind of things we'd be reading. If it's likely to be heavily fantasy or sci-fi based then I probably wouldn't enjoy it.

Re: Playground book club?
I'm partial to classics. I know we are suppose to pm list but some fine pieces that are available online, free of charge
John Milton's Paradise Lost is my first suggestion. Followed cloesly by
The Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri
These are some of my favorites, though they might not be acceptable on the boards. I will admit that they are religious in tone, but converting isn't a focus at all. I really have an itch to go read at least a canto or two of Purgatorio. But alas, the night draws to a close and I have a test tomorrow.Spoiler

Re: Playground book club?
I'm ashamed to say I have read none of these.
However, I'll see your Milton and Dante, and raise you a Homer and Dickens!
What that means is that I have read both the Iliad and the Odyssey (though I liked the latter better), and have also read A Christmas Carol (because come on, who hasn't?), David Copperfield, Oliver Twist and Great Expectations. Of the Dickens, I liked David Copperfield best. It's the only book at which I've ever cried, whenSpoilerDavid's first wife, Dora, dies. However, as my mum says, "She was too silly to live."Last edited by TheBibliophile; 2009-09-30 at 09:40 PM.

Re: Playground book club?
Ah Dickens is always fun for an enjoyable read.
Odyessy and Illiad are always a delight to read.
I see those with
The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde, mature readers only though.Spoiler

Re: Playground book club?
All right, if at all possible, I would like all requests in by sunday and I will post the requests on monday and we can vote. In the meantime, raise as much awareness of this club as you can in the playground. Get as many people as you can to join. Thanks for all this enthusiasm.

PS
Maybe if someone made a banner or people started putting links to this thread in their sigs? If people can do any of these please do them. You will be rewarded with all our thanks.

Haven't read that. Have read (and seen!) The Importance of Being Earnest , by the same author, though.
I see those with my having seen an open-air performance of both The Merchant of Venice and The Three Musketeers, and having read those books in their own right as well.Amazingly cool avatar by Mauve Shirt. May she ever be promoted and not demoted! *promotes*

Re: Playground book club?
Have any of you checked out Good Reads? It's a social networking site for reading. They have a group feature - maybe a GitP group over there would make more sense?
Please note that I'm not trying to draw away attention from the Playground. Rather, I think GR is more conducive to this sort of thing than a thread on a forum, so maybe we should bring a GitP presense over there. Represent, yo!
For what it's worth, I'm not so into the social part of the site. I like it for materialistic reasons. It lets me keep track of the books I own. Books can be categorized into shelves, which are basically metadata tags. The site comes with shelves for books you own, have read, and want to read. I've also added my own shelves for books lent out to various friends, just so I have some hope of ever getting them back. The social networking is just an added bonus on top of all that.If you like what I have to say, please check out my GMing Blog where I discuss writing and roleplaying in greater depth.

Re: Playground book club?
I kind of see your point there - I think we should have a good mix of books, and that means I approve of Belkarsbadside's idea of a list of suggestions.
I'm going to put forward Star of the Sea, by Joseph O'Connor, as a good introductory text. However, I would also recommend any of Katherine Mansfield or J.D. Salinger's short stories, if people would prefer to start with smaller pieces.
