Default Best and Worst Film of the Year

Rules are simple, the film must have been at the cinema in the country where you live sometime during 2017

BEST FILM (Roll on the drums)

DUNKIRK : Tense, horrifying, uplifting, thrilling and packed with imagery that stayed with me. I just loved it and yes I'm probably prejudiced because I'm English.
Also a nice note in the age of dumb blockbusters was Nolan trusting to the audience's intelligence and advancing the three plot lines over different time periods.

    HONOURABLE MENTIONS

WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES, BLADE RUNNER 2049, WINDRIVER

    WORST FILM

THE HITMAN'S BODYGUARD : A big budget, huge stars and they still made a film this terrible ? There just seemed a utter lack of any creative spark in this film. Everything was so utterly 'you've seen this in another film and they did it better there'. It just felt so completely tired, as if nobody could do more than turn up and get paid.
Straight into my top three worst movies seen at the cinema

    DISHONOURABLE MENTIONS

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 5 (Yes, I've only myself to blame), THE DARK TOWER, THE GREAT WALL

INAUGRAL 'SO BAD ITS GOOD' FILM

KING ARTHUR: LEGEND OF THE SWORD : What happens when Guy Ritchie, the master of the cockney gangster movie takes on arguably his home countries greatest myth. Obviously he turns it into a ancient cockney gangster movies
Ritchie gains extra points for the chutzpah/idiocy of intending this to be the first in a whole franchise of Arthurian movies. Including, unless I'm mistaken, putting in plot points to be picked up in the latter movies. Sadly now never to be.
Too long, too loud but still gloriously silly and with some great imagery (if you ignore how stupid the things its portraying are). I loved seeing it. Once
Also is it me or is Katie McGrath turning into the new Sean Bean for dying horribly on screen
All Comicshorse's posts come with the advisor : This is just my opinion any difficulties arising from implementing my ideas are your own problem

Uhm. I don't think I'm qualified on bad movies. I only ever see two or three movies a year in cinemas and only whne I'm sure I'll like them. So...

    Best movie:
Bladerunner 2049. Best movie I've seen in years.
Honorable mentions: Baby Driver, Thor: Ragnarök

Same, tbh. My list is actually the same, but with Get Out replacing Thor. I also liked It Comes At Night.

I might place Get Out as worst movie I've seen this year. Not that it was bad, as such, but I found parts of it quite jarring and I haven't seen anything really bad.
The tone was very inconsistent. The first half seems to be a very typical "different kinds of people meet and don't quite understand each other" comedy, except it has some very weird out of place jump scares in it and I found the black servants to be quite a bit overacted. Then, the second part is a rather absurd horror movie plot about mind-switching (except after you take the brain out, the old personality is still there in the body? That makes no sense.) with weird out-of-place comedy beats in it. The entire thing just didn't quite click together for me, though the cinema was pretty much laughing non-stop up until the break. It didn't seem to be quite able to decide if it wanted to be an absurd parody or comedy or a straight horror movie.

Frankly, given the budget I don't think they had any actual plans for Get Out. For pure ROI, that's probably the biggest hit this year.

For biggest surprise, in a very good way, Wonder Woman. Female led and directed action film (comic book, even) turns into one of the bigger hits of the year domestically and internationally, one of the few bright spots in a lackluster summer box office and potentially the saving grace of the DCCU if the execs pay attention to what actually sells.

2017 was a very good year for films IMO.

    Honorable mentions:
Wonder Woman, Thor: Ragnarök, Wolverine, Get Out, The Last Jedi, Dunkirk, Blade Runner, Guardians of the Galaxy 2

Dunno which is THE BEST but it's definitely one of the honorable mentions.

I bet there are other great movies, heard good things about Baby Driver and John Wick 2 but I haven't seen them yet.

I haven't seen many new releases, this year. I think it's only been Power Rangers, Dunkirk, Logan, and Split. If the Doctor Who Christmas Special counts, there's that as well.

The best of the bunch is gonna have to go to Power Rangers, naturally. If I had to pick the worst, I suppose it would have to be Split, if only because I liked it slightly less than Logan.

Feel free to challenge me on these.

I only saw four movies this year - which is actually one more than average for me. Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Wonder Woman, Thor: Ragnarok, and Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Of them, I'm not sure between Guardians 2 and Thor for the best, though my gut reaction leans Guardians. Worst is The Last Jedi, no question, since I liked the other three but did not like that one.

    Best: Logan
Looking across the superhero genre it was the most refreshing film in years. Deadpool did an ok job at breaking the stereotype, but Logan blew it right out of the water. Anyone could have sat down to watch that movie with no prior knowledge about the characters, and by the end of the film they would have deep attachments to the characters and cared about the stakes of the film. 10/10.

Worst: Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets
    Need I say more?

Worst Film: The Emoji Movie. It's objectively The Emoji Movie. I'd argue it wins worst film of the Decade and The Century So Far while it's at it.

    Best:
    Spider-Man: Homecoming
Not only is Tom Holland the best Spider-Man of the three by a large margin, but this movie was just everything I wanted. It was great.

    Worst:
    Tammy
It had a few okay scenes, but it just wasn't that funny. I was disappointed.

I just remembered that The Emoji Movie came out this year, all of your bad movie opinions can step aside because none of them come close to the badness of The Emoji Movie. This movie is the nuclear bomb of bad movies, this makes movies like "The Room" look good. This movie makes the casino scene in the Last Jedi look like an artistic masterpiece. The badness of this movie is like a Lovecrafian cosmic horror in that it drives you insane just by seeing it.

There are plenty of ways, and it seems they managed to find most of them.

The Last Jedi has made one billion dollars in the last 16 days, the third fastest film to make that mark (Jurassic World did it in 13 days, but The Force Awakens is the champ at a day faster).

Honorable Mentions? Thor: Ragnarok, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, Wonderwoman and Spiderman: Homecoming.

Worst? Emoji Movie and I didn't even see it.

So bad it's good? Arthur: Legend of the Sword. So good, so bad. All right.

The my best was Blade Runner 2048 as well. It's just a stellar movie - richly complex, visually striking, and well acted. I was never as into Blade Runner relative to its pedestal in the realm of cinematic speculative fiction, but the world it depicts is visually and conceptually haunting and... I think BR'48 does that world just as well and brings out a stronger narrative with more interesting characters. I suppose I have similar sentiments to it that some people who put Fury Road among their favourite movies do.

As to the worst. Either Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets or Ghost in the Shell. It's difficult picking one over the other because they both have roughly the same reaction from me in seeing all this money put on screen - the hundreds of hours these visual effects designers put into it - but with such weak scripts (and performances by their leads weren't stellar either) as to not make either worth a damn.

Ghost in the Shell has this dissonance with its source material which was constantly on my mind, and its frustrating to see where they rounded off all the edges to make a studio-safe Hollywood film for general audiences. It's mostly just a dry, underwhelming movie with not much of note to speak of beyond it being a Ghost in the Shell adaptation.

Valerian on the other hand has this really cool premise - crunching down a space opera universe into a single enormous space-city to do pulp mysteries/adventures with space cops - but then focused the story on some of the least likeable protagonists I've seen, and put them within a narrative that was dreadfully thin and had way too much going on at the same time. It could have been sort of b-movie turn-your-brain-off fun even with its weak script and frustrating characterization of the leads if not for the deuteragonists' banter, which was so forced and incessantly awful that it made every moment following these two a chore.

I didn't expect much from Ghost in the Shell, but it's still not very good at just being an action movie above all else and it really is depressing to think about. Whereas I was modestly excited for Valerian as this bold SF work by a quirky auteur who gave us Lucy and The Fifth Element - both of which are pretty flawed but have memorable scenes in them - and the trailers for it were really neat, but actually sitting down to watch it I found myself constantly either inwardly groaning or sighing.

So, I don't know, neither are really worth consternation in the grand scheme of things.

This is Objectively the Worst Movie of the year. Hands down.

This is Objectively the Worst Movie of the decade thus far. Hands down.

This is Objectively the Worst Movie of the Century thus far. Hands down.

And the worst part, I looked it up. Unless they spend more then about 167 Million Dollars Marketing it, they made a profit.

Possibly enough to incentivize them into making a second one. Damn thing made 217 million global box office and cost 50 Million to make.

As I've repeatedly said, that's not how the box office works. Studios get half of the box office, so the studio share of that $217M would be $108.5M. Actually, a little less because the exchange rate sucks right now. Call it $108M, less initial expenses of $50M, leaves an adjusted gross profit of $58M. After that, well, there's Promotion and Advertising, Profit Sharing (Sir Patrick Stewart does not work for scale), Licensing for the imagery, Studio Overhead, Merchandising, Pay-Per-View, Home Media Sales, syndication rights, etc.

Net profit will likely never be known even in the industry. Hollywood is a shell game played in the dark.

Best: The Distaster Artist--although I also really liked Dunkirk and I'm looking forward to seeing Darkest Hour.

Worst: A Bad Moms Christmas. I saw this with a friend, and the whole time we was just cracking up. I hated the movie, but I kept laughing because his joy was sort of contagious, and I was incredulous that he could possibly be enjoying himself. On the way out, I tell him, "I was laughing because you were." He responds with, "I was laughing because I made you sit through A Bad Moms Christmas."

Edit: Worst was actually The Last Jedi. I kept thinking that it was over, and it kept not being over.

Best Film is Wonder Woman for me, no question.

Not just because I never expected an actual "heroic" film (probably the one truly faithful to the genre) but because it's the one that left the strongest impression in me. Even when I'm not a huge fan of WW. I think that as far as heroes goes, WW is the epitome of the trope in cinema.

Honourable mentions: Spiderman Homecoming; Batman Lego; Power Rangers*; Guardians of the Galaxy 2; Thor Ragnarok*; Justice League* and War of the Planet of the Apes (an actual contender for top place, IMHO)

*But only because I still can't quite grasp how the movie didn't devolved into the kind of mess I was expecting it to be. They turned out to be the best surprises of the year for me :)

Worst Film would be... Okja. Huge mess of a movie. Worst 2 hs and something of the whole year for me and my girl. Never been so angry to a movie-maker.

Dishonourable mentions: The Mummy; Transformers**; Beauty and the Beast (haven't even had the guts to watch it yet, need more beer)

    **Really, just stop it!

So Bad It's Good: Baywatch, cuz The Rock!

DISCLAIMER: Still haven't found the time to watch Logan, Ghost in the Shell, Blade Runner, It or Star Wars (actually, Imma watching the latter in some hours). Otherwise I'm sure they would get a spot on the dis/honourable mentions Also, Coco hasn't been released in my country yet T_T

Spoiler: I've already ranted once-so repeat
    Show

mother! (non capitalized but with exclamation for meaning)

I was pissed off. I was annoyed. This wasn't a story. This had no people in it, there were artistic statements in human form. I found the questions of how people (such as "man", "woman", "Him" (capitalized because meaning), sons, several large crowds), things (food (there was no garden), building supplies, electricity, etc) got to and from the house in which it is set than the story itself (external shots show there are no roads, support structures, signs of vehicles, etc.-because earth allegory?)

All this meant I couldn't care at all about what was going on in the movie. Baby being eaten by frenzied mob-no reaction beyond mild insult for trying to get me to feel without actually putting any work into it. 20-30 minutes of torturing of Jennifer Lawrence (she didn't actually have enough of a character for me to ever not see it as the actress) with a totally-do-not-believe-it pregnancy belly? Do not care. Suspension of disbelief, empathizing with characters, and all that never happened. Which under a constant blacksmith's hammer beat of "this is important" and "this is ART/the ARTIST experience" just was infuriating.

I read somewhere that of a 115 min run time 66 minutes were close ups. I'd believe that. It was shot and edited in such a way as to make me actively notice it. That just takes me out of the movie and makes the whole thing feel like it was dragging even more.

as for the acting? Well most of them are ACTING!. I mentioned they no real characters just allegory. There is a try hard aspect to the whole thing every minute. Ed Harris seems confused and from what his character seems to be asked to do I'm not surprised. And dropped right into this is Michelle Pfeiffer. And she's great. She brings a humanness to a role just as inhuman as everyone else's. She feels solid and vibrant. You don't really like her character (woman, that's her character-because meaning) is vile but the acting is good. And by contrast she shows just how weak every other character is in the piece. So even the good things are bad.

As "what's it about" questions that my friends have been giving me when I've warned them off. The story of genesis, rape of the natural world, theatre of cruelty, the importance of bracing sinks, the woe of being an ARTIST or being in love with one, global warming, fame, house refinishing, madness, baby torture, ...and in large part because of all of the above its actually about absolutely nothing.

As a spur for think pieces and articles and critic "conversations" it seems to have been great. As a movie I'd say it came from the back end of a male bovine while reeking of pretentiousness and calling it the finest perfume.

And I generally like Oscar-bait artsy films.

DISHONORABLE MENTION-Movies I would never watch again and considered a waste of time and money
    ALIEN COVENANT.....the idiocy!
GHOST IN THE SHELL . . . well that was a waste of the source material
THE SNOWMAN....I feel there was different movie re-edited to create this.

SO I see a fair number of movies (yay movie club-cards!) but this was not a great year.

Best: ??? Can't say. Didn't see to many films, and the ones I did see didn't wow me. I might watch Logan sometime in the next week so it might be that. I've heard good things about it, and I do tend to like the X-men films. I'll even defend Apocalypse.

Worst: Beauty and the Beast remake. I only need one reason to classify this as the worst:

Disney Executive: "Hey I got a great idea! Let's make a live action musical, cast someone who can't sing in the lead, and try to fix it with auto-tune. What could go wrong?"

Not to mention they add like a minute of filler to each scene to stretch out an 80 minute film to 2 hours.

Since there are many types of movies, I can't pick a single best movie.

For best superhero movie (let's face it, there are so many it needs a category by itself this year and probably in the next few years), I would pick wonder-woman.
Thor and guardians were also good, but I liked this better.

As for horror movies, "Get out" manages to do something many horror movies forgot to do for years, rely on disturbing things that makes you think after the movie is over and not just on jump scares.

Speaking of which, I'll vote "IT" as the worst horror movie of the year, as well as the most disappointing.
There were probably worse, but since it's a reboot of a movie based on a book it has to be compared to both, and it pales in comparison.
If I had to use one word to describe the movie, unfortunately it would be "forgettable". Without the knowledge of both the book and the previous movie incarnation, I would not remember any character a day later.

I didn't see many movies this year, so I don't really have any to select for "worst movie" category (and there is no way in hell I'll pay for "Emoji" just to put it on the list)

To clarify, I didn't pay to see Emoji movie either; reviews from sites I trust and the CinemaSins breakdown are what informed me there.

Alien Covenant is also pretty far down my list. Can we get just one sci-fi horror movie where the protagonists - especially those alleged to be brilliant scientists and other professionals - don't ride the short bus?
