Default The Tribes of Tell Amakh (Part 1 IC)

    The Tribes of Tell Amakh

The Lone Mountain stands in the middle of Tell Amakh lands, surrounded by forrests, plains and rolling grasslands. Uninhabited during most of the year, it is the center of tribal life each spring, as the leaders, heroes, elders and whelps of each tribe meet on its slopes to celebrate another circle in their life.

As every year, the bulls of Clan Gargan arrive first, setting up camp west of the gathering place high on the slopes and preparing the gathering place for all others. Their role as the leading clan, the clan of the chief of all clans, has gone unchallenged for years. They are proud of that fact and go about their business with an eye towards perfection. It does not pay to be seen as weak in the tribes. Weakness is the beginning of the end. Weakness is without honor, without any worth.

As one tribe after the other arrives, soon only the wolves are missing. Their late arrival is unusual, but considering the difficulties they had to face lately, somewhat understandable.

As each year, the whelps - unnamed warriors of all tribes - gather outside the main camp, forming a small group of young women and men all in their 15th year of life. Their tests will be the last part of the year's celebrations.

Each of the whelps knows what is at stake, knows that its very life depends on their showing in the upcoming tests. Some brag, others rest, but all of them show a certain degree of nervousness, hidden more or less well.

Their futures will be decided in the upcoming days. If they pass the test, one of the totem animals of the clans will chose them as their companion and they will be admitted into their new tribe with honor and pride, strengthening and enriching that tribe. from then on they will no,longer be whelps but proud warriors or hunters, representing the best the tribes have to offer.

Failure in the test is not spoken about, but fear of it can be seen plainly on many a youthful face. Failing the test is to die, to be cast out and hunted, to be shunned and alone for the rest of the short span of life alotted to them.

He sat quietly, his legs crossed, deep in thought. His long black hair flowed down his back, blending with his rich brown doe-skin leathers to make him appear as a lump of wood in the scenery.
He had wandered off from the Horse clan camp after helping to set it up, doing his best to ensure that everything looked just right. He wanted to make his tribe proud, but also at the same time show that he had enough skill of his own to stand out.
Tasunke had come here to relax, to quiet himself before his trials. He sat now, in as close to a state of calm as he could muster, focusing his mind on the little bubbling stream in front of him. He pictured riding bareback and free with the wild horses of the plains, the wind sweeping through his hair. He felt close to the Great Mother and her children, earth, wind and water combined within him making his form whole. Tasunke felt as if he could almost feel the beat of the heart of life within the earth, it calmed him, as if his face were pressed against the bossom of his very own mother.

The young female whelp of the Bull clan sat in solitude, away from the others of her clan. It was easy to see why. Although a member of the Bulls, she showed quite clearly the lineage of her long destroyed, long disgraced Snake clan. As well, while the other female whelps of the Bull clan talked of making homes, making families, this whelp longed for battle, for the chance to prove herself a warrior. But that was not the way of the Bulls, their women did not seek battle glories. Finally, although she named herself warrior, she did not carry with her any weapons that would seem to be deadly or any armour to protect herself. Instead, when she did move, she seemed to just dance, her hands moving in intricate patterns, how this woman would use this to defeat foes, no one could tell.

A young, gangly whelp sits at one of the campfires dotting the encampment. He wears a brownish-grey suit of leather that moves as noiselessly as he does. His green eyes are bright and alert, and his unruly mop of black hair hangs over his brow as he leans over his work. Belts of knives cross his chest, and more knives adorn the belt at his waist. The young whelp is currently sitting with a whetstone on one knee, calmly honing a knife to razor-sharpness as he chats with other whelps around the fire.

"I ever tell you 'bout the time my buddy outsmarted half the farmers in a 5-mile radius? So he was out lookin' for food, right, and he comes across..."

Hours later, Tell Ló outriders arrive with the news that the Tell Farh are finally coming. News travels fast and you hear that the Tell Farh have been attacked by a force of Icemen and had suffered some losses before driving them off.

At first only a single warrior comes out of the wood, astride a wounded Dire Wolf. Slowly, the rest of the group comes into sight, but they are far fewer than expected. Those who do arrive are mostly wounded.

A small group of 3 whelps splits off and heads for the whelp camp. They all show traces of having been in a fight, but noone is seriously wounded. Courious, the whelps gather around the newcomers to hear the news.

A young female whelp walks at the head of the trio. She is bruised, dirtied, and obviously winded from battle, but she still carries herself with a stoic, proud, and determined stride, clad in rough, scratched armor of studded leather lined with heavy fur. A large double-headed axe is strapped across her back like that of a woodcutter, but obviously designed for combat. Like many others of Tell Farh, she is smaller in height than one would expect from a girl her age, but at the same time she appears taller than what most girls of the Wolf clan aspire to. Her form is lean and well-muscled, but still bears a feminine slenderness and developing curvature to it that contrasts with her boyish demeanor. Her hair is short, black and unkempt, framing a face set with shining olive-green eyes that, although weary, refuse to show anything but confidence and determination.

As the three approach the Whelp camp, and are greeted by the intrigued curiosity of the Fox whelp, she speaks up, her voice one that sounds as if at any other time it might have a melodic ring to it. "Icemen, at least a hundred of them," she declares to the boy, slowing to a stop and taking a shaken breath as they come within reasonable conversing distance. "They attacked the Tell as we were crossing a river to the North. We fought them off, and they ran with their tails between their frost-bitten legs. I only wish our Chief, Balegas, had given pursuit." Here she pauses her proud boasting, as if uncertain, adding tentatively, "But...we lost a lot of people. We're all that's left of the Whelps that came." Her moment of hesitation disappears quickly, however, and she adds with a decided nod, "But we who survived are the stronger for it. Even with our losses, we won, and so it seems the spirits have given us their favor."

A tall, solid-lanky boy - clearly a Bull - listens intently to what has happened. He stands 6' 1" tall, and weighs in at 210 pounds. He has red, curly, hair and grey eyes. He looks like he'll grow into a fine-looking young man, though he is currently a gangly teenager in the middle of his pubescent changes (creaky voice, some acne, etc.). Add to that some social awkwardness ... it is only his solid frame and intensity that keeps him from being teased.

After hearing the story of the attack he draws his massive bow, standing off a few feet from the others. His keen eyes make sure his line of fire at the woods is clear, and he prays to his ancestors for wisdom to guide him to an answer for this problem. [Without actually invoking a spell.] He shoots with unnerving calm.

He then retrieves his arrow. If it landed in a tree trunk, he studies the lines of the bark; if it lands on a branch, he removes the branch with an axe to study the core; if it lands on the ground, he studies the web of plants around it. All this he does to see if he can divine a message from the life of the earth.

Of the three wolf whelps, one of them is a full head shorter than the other two. Small even for one of the Tell Farh, her plain brown hair frames a very ordinary and well tanned face. Soft, well worn, leather armor covers the upper body and the folds of her simple dress reach down to her ankles, revealing simple leather moccasins beneath. A hunting knife and a wicked looking barbed dagger both hang from her belt, as does a small leather pouch, and she holds a long spear upright in her left hand. The blade of the spear is drenched in dried blood, evidence of the ferocity of the fighting, yet she remains silent during her companion's discussion of events, speaking up only once she companion had finished, her voice hard "We lost too many. More than half of our people were slain, and almost as many of our wolves."

She pauses, canny eyes assessing those before her, as she states will a mixture of pride and sorrow, "The blood of more than twice that many Icemen feed the earth where we fought, despite it being them who ambushed us, yet our losses will be felt for many years to come."
Her eyes speak of loss and pain, yet this shows not on her face, nor even a tremor in her voice.

Quietly, a boy and girl of the Horse Tribe whelps walk up and listen in on the details of the skirmish. Of the two, the boy is most striking in appearance, with a shock of pulled-back long, white hair. Multicolored eyes sit below light brows. He is not overly tall, average for his age, but is well-muscled. A longsword of foreign make is strapped to his hip. It is obviously well worn and the whelp wears it with an air of one that is proficient in its use. Otherwise, the almost-man is dressed in reinforced leathers studded with small amounts of metal, and further equipped with a trio of throwing spears.

The boy mutters a few things at the girl as they listen on, sharing commentary back and forth. They had obviously grown up together.

At the description of Tell Farh's loss, the whelp comments to the speaker quietly, "May they be judged worthy." The statement has the sound of rote, rather than maturity.

The snake whelp listens quietly to the battle description. When she speaks, her voice is the hiss of a snake, with a sibilant roll to her S's and C's.

The Icccemen grow bold in their attacksss. But why did your chief not pursssue and finisssh them off?

Her eyes are flat, and emotionless as she speaks.

The third of the wolf's whelps is standing an bit off the group and has yet to say a word. He isn't tall, but sturdy, the long dark hair tied back with a strap of leather. His simple, wide cut clothes contrast with the elaborate. ornate cloak he is wearing. The only weapon he wears is a long, bent sword.
He quietly listens to the others talking, then goes over to a tree and sits down, leaning on the trunk. He takes of armor and braces of studded leather, pulls out a piece of cloth, wets it with a liquid from a waterskin and begins cleaning himself from the bloody mud on his arms and face.
His grey eyes wander between the whelps and some point in the distance. After a while he puts away the rag but still stays out of his armor. He stands up and continues to listen to the other whelps, still leaning against the trunk.

When the girl with the dancelike movements speaks up, he takes a step towards the group.
"We've lost about half our warriors, the rest wounded. Even if we'd have caught them it would have cost more than we can afford. Besides, we'd have to leave the wounded helpless to pursue them. What use is there in killing thirty more icemen, if our tribe perishes with them?"

"The important thing is that we survived," intones the whelp who had related the news, looking to her two companions. "And the Icemen will have learned not to mess with Tell Farh. In any case, standing around talking won't bring back the fallen. We're here for the Meet, and the Namegiving."

Stepping forward, she moves to take a seat on a log and takes a drink from her waterskin, glancing about the camp.

The diminutive wolf whelp takes a seat on the ground and taking the small piece of cloth that is in her hand, she begins to clean the blade of her spear.

[Sleight of hand (to palm the piece of cloth): 1d20+9=(1d20+9)[23] vs Perception (for anyone who wants to notice it)]

Looking towards the whelp with the knives, she replies without taking her eyes off her cleaning, "I would expect that we will be tested ... Perhaps a better question is what do those who fail lack? What traits do they share?"

The whelp with the axe glances briefly at the white-haired whelp, responding with a shrug, "I don't know, but I don't think they would start immediately, especially after what Tell Farh has gone through."

Drawing a whetstone from a pouch on her belt, she sets to sharpening her axe, lowly humming a song taught to her by her mentor.

"No," says the tall one with the bow, returning from his arrowshot into the forest. "They will do so soon, but they must first hear all of what ails the tribes. What happened to you in Wolf might actually mean that more will go to Wolf than expected. With so many losses, and Wolf as the protection from the icemen to the north, they will need to be replenished sooner than births and the sun's many cycles can provide. This will take much discussion among the elders. Come, smoke a pipe with me and share your stories, that we may entertain ourselves til we are called upon. We are nothing without our stories."

The wolf's whelp in the coat nods toward the one with the bow. "I like this idea. There's always something to learn, especially when we have the opportunity to talk to ones of the other tribes." Then he opens the pouch hanging from his belt and takes out something of a dark yellow, wrapped in leaves. "I don't smoke, but I have a piece of honeycomb, if someone wants. It calms the mind to chew on it and it still has some honey in it, so it tastes sweet and yummy. If you like sweet things, that is."

You settle down and whelps from all over the tribes start to quietly talk. Focus is, of course, on the fight with the icemen.

The clan chiefs has gathered meanwhile and you can see a discussion going on between them, with Balegas the Grey, chief of Tell Farh, repeatedly pointing to the north, standing, gesturing, obviously angry, while the other chiefs stay in their usual seats.

After a while, Balegas sits down and old, wise Orea, chief of Tell Bagol and a famous Elemental Master, slowly stands up, her movements slow and meassured. She adresses the assembly quietly, then everyone nods.

Balegas stands up once more, then comes walking down towards your group, his expression completely neutral, emotions supressed. Those who know his can see by the way he moves that he is extremely agitated, though. His huge wolf, Iceeyes, follows on his heels.

He stops where the 3 whelps of his clan can be found, then looks around.

Pointing at 5 others seemingly at random, he says: "You whelps have been chosen for a special task to replace your tests. Follow me."

Without another word, he turns around, walking back to the council of chiefs.

    Spoiler
    Show
He of course selects the rest of the group in addition to the 3 wolf whelps.

Looking up at her chief as he approaches, the whelp with the axe stands up out of respect, and watches him uncertainly. She is wary of his irritated body language, but as Balegas summons them all to follow him, the whelp quickly puts her whetstone away and straps her axe across her back once more, following close behind him.

The white-haired whelp blinks in mild surprise at the command and glances at his friend. She shrugs at him and nods after the retreating adult.

The whelp stands and hustles after the man.

He is obviously angry about something, but his anger has been at least partially appeased. It seems his wish has been denied, but whatever sollution was found afterwards might be acceptable as an alternative to him.
