I assume being a drugged-up psychotic homicidal maniac doesn't do good things to one's intellectual capabilities. But I'm not an expert, so I can't be certain.

I think it causes an increase in violent desires and a loss of self control(which may be the same thing, I'm not 100% on what constitutes megalomania). Trying to attack the arena compeditors seems like it's inspired by a combination of ambition, desire for recognition and plain old bloodlust, so it's not a suprising goal for someone in the midst of a descent to have.
