    Default Isoria's Legacy

After Octavian, Ambrosius, Pauline, Khronik, and Wolfram came to Selanne City in Lorm from various destinations and formed a mercenary company, the Sentinels Brigade, they inherited an old house once owned by the Seraphis family, now belonging to Ambrosius. However, it had been uninhabited for almost five years, and was in need of some repairs.

Although they officially had a base, working around the renovations was somewhat troublesome; thus, a job that took them out of town would be ideal. After asking around, they found what looked like a simple enough job - escorting a merchant ship on a long trading journey.

The Sentinels Brigade inquired about the job and were hired by Renier Sallus, and up-and-coming merchant captain. The job was simple - protect his small fleet of 5 trade ships as they went on a long trading journey - estimated about a year-long voyage. The pay was excellent: a share of the profits, estimated at about 15,000 gp each (of course, if cargo was lost on the way or other unfortunate events happen, the pay would be less - but then, they would be no worse off than Sallus himself).

The only drawbacks were the long amount of time at sea (although Sallus promised they would regularly stop at ports on the way), and his refusal to reveal the exact destinations they would stop at - he insisted it was a trade secret, and refused to divulge his exact plans until they left. However, Sallus was known as a canny businessman and an honest sailor, and the pay was both fair and high, so the Sentinels Brigade agreed.

Sallus also included 12 potions of water walking and any suits of leather armor that those wearing heavy armors wanted "on loan" for the duration of the trip. They could keep any unused potions, although the armor was to be returned at the end of the voyage.

OOC: Just a note - you can wear metal armor on a ship fine - this is if you need to be wearing armor you can swim in for something, or so you can sleep in it. If you can't swim in your armor, you should definitely carry a potion.

[Tag] Post up (at least) two separate parts - they can be two posts, or one divided post. First, put in a brief bit about how you got to meet up with the others and come to Lorm and a short description of your character. This doesn't have to be super long and complicated, but you can make it long if you want to describe more.

Second, put in a description of what your character does as you get ready to get on the ship - you're taking a short journey to the port at a prearranged time and then getting onboard.

If you have any questions, have specific things you want to take care of before you leave (like researching, making a knowledge check, getting some supplies, asking Sallus about something, etc), or anything else, feel free to put it up.

A few of the obvious ones:

Sallus isn't evil. None of you think he's trying to cheat or trick you with his offer (or you wouldn't have taken it). Any mundane supplies you want (like rope or whatnot) Sallus will supply; same for food (hardtack and stale water with a bit of alcohol). Someone's left in charge of your base, and when you get back it should be in good repair. Any offers of employment will be held onto.

Khronik came to Selanne city from the Land of Giants. He was born in the gnome suburb of Upper Large Sedimentary Cavern, a district of Large Sedimentary Cavern. His mother was a stern authoritarian woman who gave him many helpful sayings for the future. Khronik does not speak of his father often, but it is obvious that he was not present for Khronik’s childhood. After being rejected by his long-time girlfriend Sniffly Pretty-Bottom because he was too “wild and needed to go and see the world before settling down”, Khronik left for the surface.

After a long trek underground he surfaced in the Land of Giants where he was adopted by the medicine woman of an Ogre tribe. When the tribe was killed by adventurers, he was brought back to the Lormish colony on the island. The adventures gave him some spare magical items, and enough money to get to Elbar. Once he was in Selanne city, he was told that Ambrosius was looking for people with “useful skills”. He was one of the first people that Ambrosius accepted.

Khronik, when people could see him, is a not-unattractive gnome, with his blue eyes and blond hair. He spent almost all of his time hiding though.

OOC: Khronik tries to blend in at every occasion, almost always HiPSing, unless he’s actively saying something. This is probably disconcerting to most people, but to him, it’s the reason he’s called “Hard-to-See”

He occasionally would turn up and say something worthwhile, but he was more likely to offer either a disturbing quote from his mother, or a poorly worded, generally offensive come on to Pauline. His previous remarks included such poorly phrased gems as

“They sure do grow *fruit* larger on the surface. You are to be commended for you bountiful harvest”

    And

“If you’d like me to show you my *spelunking technique* I’m well versed in underground geography.

After she got offended he quickly backpedaled and explained that in gnomish, it was not an offensive comment and that he did not intend to offend her. He explained that Lormish was a difficult language and he just wanted to compliment her on her appearance. He is regarded as “generally harmless” with his tongue and “generally a lot less harmless” with his rapier and short sword.

To get ready to ready to go on the ship, Khronik gallantly told Pauline that if she fell overboard, he would dive in after her, and also took a potion of water walking “just to be sure gnomes is easy to blow away”. He buys a sailing map (after asking Sallus what maps he should buy if he wanted to see where they were going) as well as a star chart and a diary to record the journey in. He also asked around at local taverns and pubs to get a feel for what monsters and encounters were at sea. He also asked the other members of his party what they knew about sea voyages and how to prepare for them.

Khronik would like to buy a set of sailing maps, a star chart, and a book to write in (along with normal amount of ink and quills for a year voyage) unless he can get Sallus to pay for any of these. He also makes a gather information check about sea encounters

OOC: Khronik will need to buy the writing equipment; Sallus will supply Khronik a map and star chart, though.

Khronik spent some time asking around about sea encounters at local sailor hangouts. He heard all sorts of interesting stories - most of which culminated in all but the teller being eaten by horrible sea monsters. Over a few evenings, Khronik heard nearly ever tall tale told by sailors, and heard about all sorts of monsters - Kraken, Dragon Turtles, Sea Dragons, Sirens, and a few others. However, the information was remarkably vague on information such as "what to do if one attacks you" or "how to spot them."

After learning about this Khronik went to Ambrosius and asked him about Krakens, Dragon Turtles, Sea Dragons, Sirens and the like. Ambrosius is one of the smartest people Khronik knows so this is his next move.

Khronic also asked Sallus if the ports they would stop at would carry ink, pens and paper, or if he should purchase it all in Lorm. Either way, about how much materials would the captain advise in buying?

OOC: Not sure how fast one goes through ink, pens, books etc, so can I get a reasonable idea?

Also Khronik asked Sallus about how much space he will have on the ship, and if he can bring extra cargo to trade himself?

If permitted a few pounds for "personal goods" Khronik will stock up on basic trade goods (like metals and the like) to sell at other ports (hopefully at a profit).

Also Khronik asked Ambrosius what he knew about various sea monsters, especially in the area of how to prepare.

Sallus pointed out that it depended how fast Khronik wrote, but suggested about a 300-page book - about a page a day. He carefully avoided giving a direct answer to whether they would be stopping at places that would sell paper and ink.

When Khronik mentioned wanting to put money towards trade goods, Sallus offered to let Khronik buy into the venture.

"If you don't know where you're going," Sallus explained to Khronik, "and I don't mean just where it is, I mean what the market is like, you can't make a decent profit trading. However, if you want to invest money in the venture, I'll purchase an extra share of trade goods with your money, and you'll make back the same profit as the other investors, like myself. I'll even waive the normal minimum investment, seeing as it gives you more reason to make sure the trade goods stay safe."

OOC: Basically, Sallus will let you invest money in the venture of your own. It's basically just a simpler version of the modern way of investing money in a venture; you put in 100g and if the total profit is 15%, you get back 115g. Sallus will argue against Khronik purchasing goods himself - he says he knows exactly what will and won't make them money.

Khronik went to the marketplace and bought one wizard spell books, and a vial of ink. He hopes to pick up more paper and ink later, but will have to do with what he can get for now. He shall use the writing style of “small gnomish” a highly descriptive shorthand, known for its incredible density of text. He bought a half dozen ink pens, in case some break. Then he went to Sallus and offered to invest 1Kgp in the venture, because nothing makes money like spending money, or something like that. Octavian was born into an impoverished peasant family in a small village in Lorm 23 years ago, the 8th of 12 children. He ran away from home at the age of 8, eventually becoming a street urchin in Tace.

In Tace, his many hardships and near brushes with starvation, violence, and jail, filled him with both a powerful spirituality, a distrust of authority, and the desire to create a better world order, so he became an adventuring cleric. Witnessing the religious intolerance of the Taceans and the church of St. Cayl lead him to dedicate his life to the heretical St. Elar.

Octavian eventually fled to Kaskan, where he masqueraded as a cleric of St. Menaz. After a few adventures in Kaskan, he was unmasked by Wolfram the Paladin of St. Menaz. Wolfram confronted Octavian, leading to a heated theological debate that nearly turned violent. During the confrontation, the pair were set upon by an angry mob of intolerant citizens and forced to flee. They came to an understanding and have been adventuring together ever since.

Having gained a certain amount of practical concern for monetary issues from his childhood of poverty, Octavian was the first to suggest that the pair begin seeking a way to make money off of their careers. With his martial background, it was Wolfram that suggested that they join a mercenary company.

Upon hearing of Sallus's offer, Octavian turned down the leather armor (since he already had chainmail pajamas), but gladly accepts 3 of the waterwalking potions (counting 2 for each member of the party, plus an extra 2 for each of the 2 heavy armor wearers, Octavian suggested dividing the potions thusly), and following Khronik's lead, he invested 1,500 gold pieces in Sallus's merchant venture.

When Wolfram was an infant, his mother left him on the steps of a church dedicated to St. Menaz in central Kaskan. She left a letter for the clerics explaining why she had done what she had done, but Wolfram was never allowed to know what she had written. The clerics were reluctant to raise the child, preferring to instead give the youth to an orphanage or perhaps a different church. However, the letter and Wolfram's unusual race convinced them to accept the child.

So, he was raised in the church. As expected, the clerics made sure to instill a strong sense of faith in St. Menaz and the importance of authority and selflessness. Early on, Wolfram displayed a martial bent as well as a strong faith that convinced the paladin order to take him under their wing. How education, and thus his worldview, was shaped heavily by the paladin's code of the St. Menaz paladin order.

Once he was old enough, the order began to send him out on missions. Many were to the neutral zone, though others were diplomatic missions to Lorm or other nearby countries. Of course, on these missions he often served only as a bodyguard, since he did not have that great a capacity for languages. He managed to get a surprising amount of skill quite quickly, which explains his ability at a relatively young age.

One day, Wolfram was visiting a small village in the hinterlands of Kaskan. While there, he encountered a cleric masquerading as a cleric of St. Menaz. He confronted the man, who revealed his name to be Octavian, on his deception, which quickly became a theological debate that may very well have become violent. Unfortunately, an angry mob had formed and attacked the two. With each others' help, both managed to escape relatively unharmed. This humbled Wolfram, and the two came to an understanding. Wolfram decided to go adventuring with Octavian, in order to better learn about the world and to grow more experienced. Before they left, Wolfram asked for and received permission from his order to go on a "crusade,” which was really just a fancy term to go adventuring. They adventured for some time, until they decided to join a mercenary company.

Wolfram accepted three potions, following Octavian's reasoning. Wolfram thanked the merchant for his generosity, though he declined the leather armor. Wolfram approached Sallus.

"Please, good merchant. I humbly ask you for more information about our destination. I swear on my honor I will keep any information you want secret. I feel that it would be helpful to know what to expect, so we can more effectively protect the cargo. I can respect your desire for privacy, but it seems dangerous to keep such information from your guards."

    Case 1:
If Wolfram got more information, he then went to the local church of St. Menaz to seek advice as to what to expect in that area and during the sea voyage. Then he prayed to St. Menaz for success and strength. Finally, he then discusses what he had learned with Ambrosius, though in language that would still make the actual destination more or less secret.

    Case 2:
Wolfram went to the church as above, but only asked regarding sea voyages and prayed. He went to talk to Ambrosius, but about the mission in general.

Sallus frowns at Wolfram's request, but seems to somewhat see his point. "I assure you, you'll learn all you need to know once we're out to sea. If it satisfies your concern, though, I will warn you that we will pass dangerously close to Hobgoblin waters on part of our journey, so prepare yourself to fight them."

Several of the priests at the temple of St. Menaz had fought with Hobgoblins, and one of them, an Elfkin, was old enough to remember the Hobgoblin Wars.

"Most Hobgoblin military units will have a priest of Hob or Magr with them, often in command or second in command. You can recognize them by their holy symbols - a clenched fist, or a bloody scimitar - but they're often dressed similarly to the other hobgoblins. Slay the priests of their pagan gods in the name of St. Menaz!"

Pauline was born a slave in Lorm. As a young child, she was bought by a family of minor nobility to be a playmate/handmaiden for their young daughter. At about the age of 16, the daughter was sent to a boarding to become a wizard, and Pauline was sold again, this time to an elderly mage officer/teacher at Dronne, in the city of Selanne. Ostensibly, she was bought to be a personal assistant to an elderly teacher, but in actuality, he recognized she had sorcerous potential. He took a liking to Pauline, and taught her the basics of being a mage officer. When he recently died of old age, he set Pauline free in his will. Free to do as she wished for the first time in her life, she decided to look for an adventuring job, and ended up applying to and being accepted by Ambosius.
Pauline is very shy and deferent, content to stay in the background and let others make decisions, however , in spite of this she has a very strong presence, and people who do not know her often look to her for leadership and advice.
Pauline is somewhat taken aback by the banter and attention Khronik keeps directing at her, but tries to remain composed and polite. She did not have anything to do before they boarded the boat, and took two potions of water walking, just in case.

Even since his fiancee's death, Ambrosius had been a "troubled lad" in the words of his mother. Reclusive at the Seraphis Mansion in Tacen, Ambrosius studied wizardry especially in the necromantic arts. Finally agreeing with his family that he should "stretch and explore the world for a few decades," Ambrosius moved out to a small family holding in Selanne City.

Moving took time since along the way, he began recruiting for an "expeditionary team." By the time, he reached Selanne City, he had a small mercenary company. He doesn't really run the company, letting the other members do their own thing.

The house in Selanne City was in quite the disarray. No one lived there since Great Aunt Cassia 250 years ago. For this and other reasons, Ambrosius, using family contacts, met with Captain Sullus and worked out their current mission.

OOC: Some of these Knowledge checks are actually Arcana, not Nature. Regardless:

Ambrosius knows Sirens aren't real, although Harpies are, and Harpies have sometimes been found on coastlines and the like.

Ambrosius failed his check for Kraken, but he has enough time to look up information about them in a library, and got close enough to know that they are real and where to go for the information. You can assume your characters know the info in the Monster Manual on Krakens.

Dragon Turtles: With a result that high, Ambrosius knows not only what Dragon Turtles are (see MM), but also that they're a well-known danger to ships. On the other hand, their body parts are valuable, and proof of a slain dragon turtle will usually gain the respect of sailors anywhere in Elbar.

Sea Dragons: With a natural 20, Ambrosius knows that none of the dragon varieties live in the ocean - although black dragons have been known to lair in river deltas, and occasionally in bays, they prefer stagnant water. Rumors of "sea dragons" are based on mistaking similar creatures, such as dragon turtles, for true dragons.

Pauline and Octavian noticed that the boxes, whatever was in them, weren't very heavy - the sailors were easily hoisting them into the air and walking around with them. Khronik noticed the same, but his keen eyes also spotted that they were sealed with tar - presumably to waterproof them.

The ships all looked well-made and sturdy. The five were named Venture, Perseverance, Highwind, Temperance, and Fortune. The crew were a wide mix - about half looked like native Lormish, but the rest were from all over. Most of the crew members were Elbarans, but the Sentinels a halfling lounging in the Venture's crow's nest, several large half-orcs moving crates, and even a brown-scaled lizardfolk wearing a sailor's outfit and a fine feathered hat observing them from the deck of the Venture.

Most of the crew acknowledged the Sentinels' arrival with at least a nod or a brief greeting. Sallus left his crew with instructions and went to gather the other officers, then came to welcome the Sentinels Brigade to the ships.

"Welcome! As you can see, we're nearly finished preparing to set sail. Welcome aboard. These are my officers," he said as he pointed at each in turn, "My own first mate Weyarnihkato, Captain Tybaut of the Perseverance, his first mate Lorenz de Guerneles, Captain Perronella of the Highwind, her first mate Clyment Clere, Captain Nevelonne of the Temperance, her first mate Marie Achaikos, Captain Avery of the Fortune and his first mate Aston Avery, and last but not least our navigator, Girardino de Parma." Each of the officers nodded, bowed, or in Weyarnihkato's case tipped his hat at the mention of his name.

"Gentlemen and ladies," he said as he addressed his officers, "these are the Sentinels Brigade, newly joining us for this voyage. They're here to insure that our ships, crew, and cargo all arrive safely. Ambrosius Seraphis, Wolfram, Pauline, Octavian, and, uh, there should be a gnome here. Where's Khronik?"

[tag: if Khronik reveals himself, you can interject here]

"I'm sure we'll all have plenty of time to get to know each other on the voyage, but you can consider yourselves introduced. I've got to get back to directing the last parts of our voyage, but feel free to look around the ships or talk to the crew." With that, Sallus headed back to the Venture.

    OOC: (Brief) Descriptions:
Weyarnihkato is the lizardfolk mentioned earlier.

Captain Tybaut is a young, handsome humankin wearing fine clothes. He isn't wearing armor, but has a fine-looking rapier at his side.

Lorenz de Guerneles is very much Captain Tybaut's opposite, a rough-looking half-orc with a grizzled face and numerous scars. He's wearing studded leather armor, and has a large cutlass on his belt.

Captain Perronella is a plain-looking middle-aged human. She is wearing leather armor, but not carrying a weapon.

Clyment Clere is an elderly humankin. He has numerous scars and is missing one eye. He's wearing leather armor and carrying a buckler, a crossbow, and a cutlass.

Captain Nevelonne is a tough-looking middle-aged humankin woman, dressed in old but servicable leather armor and carrying a cutlass and buckler.

Marie Achaikos is a young and attractive elfkin, with the distinctive features of Doranii heritage. She's dressed in a mithral chain shirt adorned with faint runes, and carrying a rapier and a longbow.

Captain Avery of the Fortune and his first mate Aston Avery are identical twins - the only way to tell them apart is that the captain's hat is bright red, and the first mate's is blue. Both of them are short, handsome humans with pale red hair. They wear studded leather armor and carry bucklers, rapiers, and crossbows.

Girardino de Parma is a balding middle-aged humankin wearing fine clothes and glasses. He walks with a limp on his left side.

OOC: Next round of posts, feel free to do whatever, talk to the crew/officers, look around, etc. I'm going to assume you're going around the boats separately unless you specify you are moving in a group with others.

Khronik remained HiPSed for the duration of the introduction, standing behind Wolfram. He watched all of the captains but especially Marie Achaikos, to see if their eyes lingered on him. He also squinted in his right eye and used Mama Hard-to-See's patented “What’s she like in the sack” determination technique.

OOC: Actually it’s just a general guestimate of her personality, despite the colorful name.

    Case 1:
Khronic determined something positive (loves gnomes, playful inner child, could use a cabin boy), he approached her and struck up a conversation. Specifically he decloaked when they were alone (or reasonably so, probably more like on the poop deck than in her private quarters, also waited till Pauline is on another ship) and told her she looked lovely in her mithral chain shirt, and wondered if those are runes of shadow, move silently etc (substitute in more appropriate runes if he gets information to that regard, otherwise he assumes rogue); also he complimented her on her ability to use a longbow. After this conversation, he did HiPS and check up on Pauline.

    Case 2:
Khronik determined something negative (hates gnomes, likes tall men, no need of a cabin boy, is actually lawful, gigantic thighs) he instead approached Weyarnihkato and asked him about himself in his native language (lizardfolk).

OOC: I will go into more detail on both of these, when I know which case it is.

Marie Achaikos met Khronik's eye as he looked and smirked at him, apparently amused.

Tech: Khronik was spotted by Marie, no indication if anyone else saw him. Khronik failed his "hunch" check, which means he's not sure what to make of her. What action does he take?

<i> She is a clever woman </i> Khronik thought, as he remembered the advice his mother gave about “clever women”.

    What he thought:

Clever women are like a fine wine. They taste great and can get you f***ed up for hours, but can leave you slow witted and relaxed. Clever women, like a fine wine, can be poison.

Khronik cautiously approached Marie Achaikos, and looked for the right moment to strike up a conversation.

Case 1: She looks back at him casually following her, he mouths “I see you have good taste in gnomes”, and winks.

Case 2: She doesn’t look back: this never happens and he continues to follow her.

When they are in a public area but suitably alone, he decloaks and compliments her on her fine equipment, (since he is also wearing a mithral chain shirt +1, a magic rapier, and a shortbow). His actual first words are “That shirt looks lovely on you”.

More after her reaction to initial approach, if approach is even possible…

    OOC: Case 2 occurs.

Marie turned to look at Khronik, while still keeping one eye on her crew as they worked.

"Thank you," she replied, smiling politely, "it is an heirloom from my mother. It kept her safe for many years. You must be the Khronik that Captain Sallus mentioned - why do you hide so carefully here? A test of our awareness?"

Khronik looked genuinely confused at this statement. “Hiding? Me? I’m just here.”

OOC: Khronik does not consider HiPSing to be abnormal, seeing as when his mother said “Your father is watching over us” he(Khronik) just thought it meant his father had a high hide skill.

“My mother always said that I should do my best to remain unobtrusive and not get in anyone’s way. It’s the best way to avoid annoying them. Plus, I don’t know how many people have seen a real gnome before, so I don’t want to be a distraction.”

He thought for a while before blurting out…

“Why do you carry a longbow at sea? Surely if anything was to attack you at range, you’d see it coming with enough time to arm yourself? And what did your mother do that she needed such a well crafted item?”
