Default first real try at worldbuilding[WIP]

so this is the world i am using for the fantasy novel i am currently in the proccess of writing. for now its more one continent than an entire world but more may be added

    world overview
    Spoiler
    Show
the continent consists of 5 different nations that you could actually call civilized, while the rest of the land is inhabited by all sorts of monsterous bands who would love to make a quick snack of any unwary traveler. as such most of the nations present on the continent dont have very good relations with each other since they dont want to deal with the monsters and leave the trading to the merchants who make a fortune buying and selling the goods of each nation.

    civilized nations
    karnak
    Spoiler
    Show
karnak is one of the 5 civilized nations of the world. mostly inhabited by humans, but with a few native elves, karnak is by far the smallest nation and is ruled by the high priest of their own local incarnation of the god of springtime and beauty.

    major cities and locations
    Spoiler
    Show
the hold: the hold is a large fort situated atop a hill that has served as a refuge for the nearby towns and villages for decades. the hold houses the largest garrison of troops present in the country and occasionally sends out its own expeditions to hunt monsters

alar: alar is the capital of the country, dominated by the great cathederal of spring where the high-priest sits ruling over his relatively peaceful nation. though alar is spread out over several miles, it features the smallest population since most of the general populace is spread out in small towns and isolated villages

goblin warrens of rauk-thar-ak: though not technically within karnak, these goblin warrens lie right on the border and is inhabited by a very large and aggressive tribe of goblins who worship their local god, which basically means anything they cant easilly kill. in this case their "god" is a particularly nasty giant worm who works its way through the tunnels below, the goblins of course avoid this great beast at all costs

    aldaria
[spoiler]aldaria is your typical medieval type of kingdom, divided into a number of counties, each of which Is in turn divided into a number of baronies dependent on the size of the county. as well as the counties, the current king does maintan a swath of "crown-land" in central Aldaria. aldaria is also the one country that actually makes an attempt to maintain relations with the other 4 nations, but the vast stretches of land make that quite difficult. however it is rumoured that aldaria's chief mages and alchemists are working on a way around that problem...

    important locations
    Spoiler
    Show
Fairfax: Larger even than Val Carron, Fairfax is the home of the royal palace and all power in the kingdom stems from this city. resting in the very center of the stretch of crown land known as Aldaria county, Fairfax is a home of artisans, smiths and craftsmen of all sorts.

whitby county: whitby is the largest and most prosperous of the various counties of aldaria. ruled by the countess, kahlian amnel from her castle, the county maintains one of the strongest militia's in the kingdom due to its closeness to the great western woods, but this large force does nothing to harm the confidence of the people as the soldiers are highly-disciplined and led by wise and well-respected officers.

Val Carron: Val Carron rests within the great rolling hills and wide open grasslands of central Aldaria between Whitby and Aldaria counties. it is quite large, inhabited by nearly 30,000 citizens of various races, ranging from common humans to those few members of the staunch earth-born clans who have left their unbreakable mountain strongholds to see the world.

The Colonies: if there was ever a dark spot in Aldaria's peaceful and prosperous lands it would be the island "Colonies" that lay off to the north of Aldaria's coast. the Colonies, known only to their inhabitants and a trusted few, is a massive prison colony where the worst of the worst are taken to serve the rest of their days in the rich mines of the Colonies. complete with hundreds of armed guards and elevated siege positions, breaking out of the Colonies is nearly impossible and thus serves its purpose in keeping Aldaria safe

That's actually a solid start. Plausible and already with lots of starting points to base plots on. I would suggest making them all not equal in size and strength to be more natural and less artifical than "the entire world is devided in 5 equal parts". The monster wilderness is a very good start for that.

Do you have an idea what kinds of stories are going to take place in that world? This always seems to me to be the most important factor to make a world interesting.

yeah, the 5 countries are not equal in size at all, their goverments and peoples will also be quite a bit different. i may even decide to plamt small isolated settelments in the monster lands, sort of like a point of light sort of element for those towns not connected to any of the 5 countries.

well, i anticipate many different kinds of stories in this world. the novel i am writing now starts off as what seems to be a simple rebellion in one of the largest and most peaceful of the countries, but then the real reason for the rebellion is to be revealed and turns into an entirely new ordeal
