Default Class and Level Geekery IX: the thread levels up again!

Welcome to the latest incarnation of the Class and Level Geekery thread! Here, we are discussing what the possible stats are for each of the six OOTS members. Below is an estimate of the characters' stats; this was first kept by Runolfr, Wrecan, and Chrismith. I will update this post as the discussion continues and as subsequent strips reveal more information about OOTS; RMS Oceanic will update the post with all the other characters.

Please note that we all know that Rich isn't necessarily being careful about the rules. Funny always trumps rules. Thus, there will always be some dispute as to some of the stats as some jokes are used as evidence as abilities and other strips are used as evidence of funny.

Please read the thread rules by Mark Hall.

Default Re: Class and Level Geekery IX: the thread levels up again!

    Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Which characters are included in this thread?
    (1) All members of the Order, Team Evil, and the Linear Guild.
    (2) Any frequently occuring character, as noted in the Character Appearances thread. Note that this includes Samantha: it was easier to be a common character back when the comic was shorter. We don't unlist characters just because they've died.
    (3) Family members of the main characters, as long as we have something to write about them.

Q: Which material is covered by this thread?
All comics on the web and in print (including SSDT, Gygax magazine, and the Kickstarter bonus stories), as well as anything written about the comic by The Giant. However, not included are any one-panel joke comics, such as used for incentives, t-shirts, or the fundraiser.
Note that even though the characters have stated they aren't sure whether this is the same continuity, certain items and abilities have been shown to carry over. We're listing all of it here for the sake of convenience, but any material from (e.g.) SSDT is clearly marked as such so that people can distinguish it from the main online comics.

Q: Is a character's statement about another character considered evidence?
Yes. We assume that when a character says something about another character's (or his own) ability scores, build, feats, and so forth, they are speaking the truth, except where this contradicts with other evidence or is clearly not possible within the rules.

    Q: What does "Core" mean?
The three "Core" books in 3E D&D are the Player's Handbook 1 (PHB), Dungeon Master's Guide 1 (DMG), and Monster Manual 1 (MM). This is an official term defined by WOTC, who put the word "Core" in big letters on the cover of these three books. No other books are Core, and there is no such thing as "partially Core", "almost Core", or "semi-Core" - every book is either Core or non-Core. Note that both the OOTS comic and this thread contain numerous non-Core elements.

Q: A character undertook this heinous/awesome/dutiful/impulsive/meh action. Does that mean they are now evil/good/lawful/chaotic/neutral?
No. As seen in a thousand forum threads, people have different ideas about alignment, and what defines and changes them. The alignments posted here are taken from the character's own mouth, someone else in a position to know their alignment, or their use of a spell/feat/whatever which has an alignment restriction. Kindly refrain from speculating from how a character's action changes their alignment, since it's not really something you can reason out with facts and numbers.

Q: A character undertook this brilliant/moronic/insightful/ignorant/inspiring/repulsive action. Does that mean they now have a high/low intelligence/wisdom/charisma score?
No. Similar to the previous question, people have different ideas about what the mental ability scores represent and how much they influence a character's personality. The ability scores posted here are taken from the character's own mouth, someone else in a position to know their scores, or their use of a spell/feat/whatever which requires a minimum ability score. Kindly refrain from speculating from how a character's personality changes their ability scores, since it's not really something you can reason out with facts and numbers either.

Q: How does Xykon cast Maximized Energy Drain in comic 652?
We don't know for sure. The most popular theories involve the feat Improved Spell Capacity, the feat Sudden Maximize, or a Rod of Metamagic. Each theory has its pros and cons.

Q: What magic item makes Xykon immune to fire damage in comic 653?
We don't know for sure; there are multiple items within RAW that make their user immune to fire, available from level 14. Note that Xykon doesn't specify whether it's an amulet, ring, belt, or other kind of item.

For some reason, this is being treated as a sternly factual statement that Celia went on a date wearing a dress that causes Feeblemind, and the casualties she caused along the way went uncommented.

Okay, so I'm thinking Tarquin has levels in monk (among other things), because he's used improved versions of deflect arrow and stunning fist (well, with an axe, but still). I don't think there's sufficient evidence for this yet but it would explain part of his abilities.

I'm curious what we should do about Qarr. As a group of evil opposites, the Linear Guild must clearly always have six members, just like the Order does. So I'm thinking that Qarr is either still a familiar, or he's not actually a member of the LG but just hanging out with them. As I recall, some people objected to calling Qarr a familiar since he has his own agenda, but we have been unable to find any rule stating a familiar must be loyal to his master. Food for thought?

Another thing, should we list Ian in the thread? As far as I know, the only things we have is that he's a rogue and has Open Locks skill, but I'm sure if we re-read all comics he's in we can find another tidbit or two.

I don't think Qarr's a familiar. Everything about familiars is keyed off the master's level, and Qarr has his own class levels in sorcerer and everything. I don't know, though. Would his HD change upon becoming Zz'dtri's familiar? Would Z'zdtri notice an empathic link or absence of one?

Kish is definitely right about Celia's dress, though. It does not cause Feeblemindedness. In that same comic Celia and Roy make a bunch of other jokes based on applying D&D rules to romantic interaction. In fact, it would completely deflate Roy's compliment/joke if her dress actually forced a saving throw, as it would be not hyperbole but simple description.

I concur that it isn't actually a feeblemind causing dress, but I assume that this description was used because it is simply more descriptive than 'blue dress'. So the feeblemind causing part should be read as between "'s or something (why it isn't between quotes then, I don't know, but I find it hard to believe that anyone seriously thought it was a magic item that causes Feeblemindedness).

We do keep track of other characters miscellaneous clothing items (see belkars cloak or Haley's extra clothes), so the fact that the dress is listed shouldn't in itself be surprising.

    Edit: Also:

Thematically I think his perfect class would Tome of Battle character like a Warblade, but a fighter/monk is more likely at this stage given the number of feats he is implied to have. Alas we still can't nail anything down just yet. Here's hoping he snatches another arrow to give us something concrete.

I've always felt that Z's insistance Qarr was his familiar was evidence enough, citing that Blackwing has shown disloyalty to V in the past by testifying at the trial. However enough people argued that his duplicity during the fight in the EoB was enough that he was faking the whole thing that we couldn't establish consensus on it.

I don't think so. Tarquin, Malack and Kilkil are there because they're members of the guild right now. If we knew some solid levels/stats/feats for Ian then he'd be on the same level as Julia, but I don't think a class and a skill are enough to go on.

I think it was added like that to just be a little descriptive and slightly humourous. If people think the description should be more accurate I can fix it.

There's two sentences there. "Feats. Stuff." The presumption that the "stuff" is an item (or more) of some sort.

A couple things I want to throw in.

    1) Is V's jar of diamond dust on Durkon now? I see they are both listed as having it in inventory, but I'd argue that Durkon didn't have it when they resurrected Roy, so the diamond dust he has he must've acquired between then and now, which means either he procured the diamond dust in the EoB or it's the same jar V purchased in Sandsedge.

    2) Has anyone brought up the strip where Tarquin is standing on his mount? The SRD20 website states that standing on a mount is an epic Ride skill. One can infer from that short description that perhaps one can stand on their mount w/o being epic level and take a penalty to their action. And I've never played DnD so I don't know how to interpret that, but given what he does to Roy in the next panel it doesn't seem like he has penalties to his movement.

I'm not sure why it's listed at all; Roy's possessions list doesn't mention that he has the suit he wore on the same date, after all.

Belkar's cloak and Haley's extra clothes highlight an inconsistency here. The thread should either keep track of every single outfit a character it's tracking has worn and not explicitly lost, or only mention the ones that are particularly noteworthy for some reason (usually translating to "magical"); I'd think the latter would make more sense.

I doubt that can be counted as him standing on his mount, because he takes no action while doing so other than preparing to leap off and strike Roy. Considering he hits Roy only once, his preparation/leap was likely his move action, which means he didn't even use the "Fast dismount" usage of the Ride skill, although I'm not entirely certain what the rules are for falling and whether it uses up your move action; he could've used fast dismount and then had his move taken up by the fall.

That's true of normal familiars (i.e. ordinary animals) but not of advanced ones (e.g. imps). Getting he former is the normal class ability, obtaining the latter requires a feat.

Would Z'zdtri notice an empathic link or absence of one?
Well, yes. Z'zdtri has an empathic link, improved alertness, the ability to share spells, and the ability to scry on Qarr; but only as long as Qarr is his familiar. With so many abilities dependent on his familiarity, it strikes me as weird that an intelligent character like Z would not have noticed.

Sure, put in two quotes and everything's good. The dress is clearly a real item in Celia's possession (we've even seen the scene with V where she buys it).

Next question: Why the assumption that "Summon Employee Exit" is one of her spells, instead of an item or ability Dorukan arranged for his employees to have, considering she says "I'll summon the employee exit" and (without saying "Summon Employee Exit") opens a door to something Dorukan had constructed?

Also discussion @ http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0735.html suggests that he either knows some healing spells or can convert those he knows to healing.

Those are all standard cleric spells. Clerics, by default, can cast everything on this list, so we're not going to copy/paste that every time a cleric appears in the comic :)

He didn't cast Inflict Moderate Wounds; he cast Quickened Inflict Moderate Wounds. For that to be a swift action rather than a full-round action, he had to have it prepared in a sixth-level slot.

Question: we're using "unspecified X spell" when a character has a certain ability but we don't yet know where it actually came from, e.g. Z's "unspecified lightning spell" and Xykon's "unspecified fire spell," right?

I ask because I think Xykon has some summoning magic that we don't know about yet. This is based on Redcloak's comment in panel 6. He specifically distinguishes it from Xykon's regular undead animation abilities as well.

No. It means that Rich stated the information used to determine the stat; you can generally read him doing so by clicking on the link.

Good catch. Yes, Xykon has an unspecified summon spell.

It means that the source for a stat is a forum post rather than a comic. Almost universally, this is a post by The Giant. For instance, Tsukiko's Amazing Wight-Making Spell was explicitly pointed out by Rich in one of the forum threads.

We don't generally assume items for things that a character can do with his own class features (this is e.g. why Belkar is listed with the Evasion ability, rather than with a Ring of Evasion). Occam's razor, basically.

Something we might want to talk about, but it would depend on whether Qarr is actually Z'sfammilar or not: If I am reading this right, for Z to have Qarr as a famillar Z's alignment would have to be lawful neutral, lawful evil or neutral evil. The problem being that if Qarr isn't technically Z's fammilar then we have nothing concrete.

Edit: on a random side note, does Malak's comments in panel 3 indicate that he has the skill Kowledge: The planes? the comment being "Hrrrrm, typical fiend behavior."

This allows the character to stand on his or her mount’s back even during movement or combat. The character takes no penalties to actions while doing so.
The "during movement" bit makes me think that it's plausible that he's using the Stand on Mount skill.

I think it's quite plausible too, which is why I suggested it. I don't get how he's not using the skill. He is clearly standing on his mount while moving towards the Order, and while standing jumps off and attacks Roy. At the very least it warrants further discussion.

Yeah; I mean, in theory he could have Stand on Mount as low as 17th level, but it would require his Ride rank to be maxxed out and his having rolled a natural 20 (maxxed out Ride skill for Fighters at 17th: +20 plus the rolled natural 20 = just making the DC 40 requirement for Stand on Mount). Since Tarquin wasn't affected by the Holy Word, we know he's at least 17th level, which fits with the minimum requirements for SoM.

TL;DR Tarquin very likely has his Ride skill maxxed out.

Not sure if this has already been proposed, but i may have an alternative to Belkar's high level.

Maybe he did get the paralysis effect, but was currently immune?
Maybe belkar was buffed with some spell that let him be immune to paralysis (does freedom of movement work with it?)

Belkar's level is derived from the number of iterative attacks he used against Roy when trying to impress the guards. Durkon's level is derived from Belkar's deafness, not the other way 'round.
