Hmmm, I remember a strategy game on the Megadrive/Genesis and I'm trying to recall the name of it. You were a robot that could transform into a plane and you had to make your way across a map capturing buildings by dropping guys near them. You could build various units and ferried them around in plane mode.

Herzog Zwei. Often considered the first true RTS. I loved it back when I was a kid.
I'll second recommendations for the Shining Force I and II and Phantasy Star 4 – they're all amazing RPGs. For shooters, Gunstar Heroes and Ranger X were also very good.

Never owned Genesis. Short list of my favorite SNES games, something remotely resembling an order:
Secret of Mana
Secret of Mana
Don't forget Secret of Mana! Despite the game bugs it was very enjoyable.
My fav SNES games: Secret of Mana (Duh) Final Fantasy VI (III on the USA cart) Super Bomberman (The best party game EVER) King of Dragons (Simple side-scrolling fighting fun) Mario Paint (Strangely fun to waste time on this) Mario Kart (I taught my dad how to play this... he promptly schooled me soon after)
I didn't own a Genesis, but... Sonic 3 (Having 3 different characters helped replay value a bit) Ghostbusters (Bobblehead ghostbusters, but it was a decent game)
