    Yup. You can't understand Redcloak or his relationship with Xykon at all unless you read it. People who try to analyze and understand the character using only the strips tend to misinterpret him badly.

    Oh my, yes. I couldn't agree more. I can't even begin to mention how important it is to understand his motives without having read that book.

    EDIT: Wait a minute, this sentence doesn't make any sense.

    Strip's Redcloak => Light-hearted comedy.
    SoD's Redcloak => Tragedy.
    Strip's Xykon => Dead baby jokes/funny silly psycho.
    SoD's Xykon => Complete monster, and then something more.

    ...I think that's a pretty superficial reading of the online strip.

    I want just to point how you look to the characters in a completely different way after reading SoD.

    Redcloak started as a parody of your typical supervillian's minion, and Xykon started as a silly, almost four wall-breaking villain who is so absurd and excessive that "crosses the line twice" and becomes funny and almost endearing.

    The strip has become more serious, but you can't really shake that supervillain-and-minion parody view until you read SoD.
