I liked it. I would suggest adding in something before the mail program that got Soaring initially thinking about transsexualism, though--or how he was first introduced to it. It doesn't have to be a life changing event; something like an innocuous conversation with someone about it might work.

it lost its "pony feel" in the middle, and could have been about a human (im assuming it was, wheather it was you or someone you know) This is a topic i havent seen discussed in MLP at all aside from joking gender-bending spells.
Its feels as if you have simply ponified a human world, rather then Equestria.

Decided I should address this as well. I'll work on ponyfying it. However, I don't consider it to be any less valid for a pony than any other type of sexuality. I know it's usually done as a joke, but I thought I'd try to do something more serious with it.

Second, what would the reaction in Ponyville be to a pony who is known to live in the Everfree Forest, only comes into town once every few weeks, and doesn't want to talk to much of anyone? A hermit/loner type. Not unkind about it, just... firm. I sort of have him worked out, just trying to work out how the town would treat him.

He's why Everfree Forest's less nice creatures haven't taken over the town. It's not so much that he fights them, just makes sure that they know he's there. Works through diplomacy, the occasional bit of intimidation, and fighting as a last resort. Why he does this... It's a position in the "armed" forces of Equestria. Not the most desirable one, but he asked for it specifically. He used to have a wife, but then there was a tragedy. An unfortunate accident with a lemon creme pie and a {redacted} resulted in her being sent forward in time. He has no idea how long it will be, but does know that he will still be alive when she comes back, and she will be "in the wildest place in Equestria". (I might elaborate on how he knows this if the redaction ever lifts on that. )

Well, we did have Zacura who lived like a hermit in the woods. She was shunned and thought evil. This guy is actually a pony, and not a zebra, so I would expect something less than this. Probably some suspicion, but mostly acceptance.

I can explain this, actually, since Inkwell is probably asleep. He told me that for the 'new' shoulder pony style, he took some inspiritation from NiGHTS into Dreams, and NiGHTS doesn't have a neck.
