Right, duck defilement. No, I meant... Why?! If it's not even a reproductive strategy why do ducks do that? Are ducks just evil bastards?
It probably is a reproductive strategy, actually - just one that's pretty much obsolete because of the females' counter-strategy. It might be a bit much to assume that all ducks do it in the first place, though.

Pretty good. I've been second-guessing when writing my filly, phrasing things to remove pronouns, and I got the courage up to refer to mesel' as 'her' and she didn't bat an eye, so that's a plus.

The brain has "grown past the temples" by birth. However, that region of the brain does not complete its development until the early or mid-twenties. It's not that "there's nothing there". It's that the connections and whatnot aren't fully developed.

It may be there "in the flesh" as it were, just not connected properly. And I should add that the brain remains plastic all life long, although there is properly some loss of plasticity as age rolls in.

Edit: Ninja'ed. However, if you damage the frontal lobes in a chimpanzee, they are unable to complete the following task: Take two cups. Place a piece of fruit in one of the cups. Remove the cups from sight for a minute or so. The chimpanzee must point to the proper cup to receive the fruit.

I predict that most teenages will be able to complete this task, so clearly some parts of their frontal lobes are functioning properly.

I'm taking an introductory neurobio class this semester. It's really neat stuff. I actually do outside readings for fun. (That might not sound like much, but for most classes I don't even do assigned readings.)

Neuroscience comes with so many brainteasers that it's ridiculous.

Example: A person has a stroke to the right parietal lobe. If you hold e.g. a plastic fork on his right side, he sees a plastic fork to the right. If you hold a plastic fork on his left side, he sees a plastic fork to the left. If you hold up two plastic forks, one on his left side and one on his right, he sees - one fork, to the right. Somehow, the fork to the right extinguishes the one on the left. What the hell?

Well. Sort of working. Depends on whether you consider a fan that turns at 80rpm to be working. Or if you would consider my bike's brakes to be working (they'll make it stop, eventually, but they make a lot of noise and aren't any good for stopping short anymore; I'll probably end up hurting myself fairly soon).

Remember that the frontal lobes are anatomically axuiliaries to the motor cortex - the function of the brain is to produce actions, after all. It is actions that are selected for or against. So we have our enormous frontal lobes to prepare far-ranging strategies for actions (and they are auxiliaries of the primary sensory cortices).

So a person with massive damage to the frontal lobes tend to do nothing. They may do simple imititative maneuevers. They may answer your questions, but only if you're talking to the person in the next bed. Or they may be in a state of akinetic mutism, where you maybe can get them to say their name if you exhort them for 20 minutes or so. (There's some evidence that patients do not suffer when under akinetic mutism - there's just not much going on internally).

I told them I was seeing my psych (not therapist) for social anxiety /light agoraphobia which is something we talk about and which I've been diagnosed with (though it's mostly dysphoria fueled and some other stuff). Grade 12? Aren't those 17-18 year olds?

If so, I can understand a bit of trepidation, but unless the school is completely ineffective and laughably underfunded then they should be a lot better behaved than, say, a 10th grade boys' gym class.

I'm getting seriously ticked off with the way "ally" seems to be becoming a slur. I wouldn't be coping with my gender weirdness nearly as well as I am without my friends, most of whom are straight and cis. But there seems to be an overriding ethos of "you must be this queer to have a valid opinion" out there, and I hate it. For example, I just went on lgbtlaughs - normally quite amusing - and found this gem.

this blog was not made for straight (cis) people, no matter how allied they are.

straight people, you are guests in this space.

if you can’t handle a member of an oppressed community being angry, snarky, teasing or mean about the oppressors (a group you are still part of even if you’re an “ally”), then leave.

    *three paragraphs more of ranting*

tl;dr: straight people, you are guests here: i do not care about straight feelings

This goes back to that left handed thing. Yes, scientifically the brain is not at full development. It is however far above minimum capacity to be considered a working brain. There's no inherent judgement in the statement "the brain does not finish developing until around 25" but there is inherent judgement in its use. If she points out the teacher meant it literally, for the sole purpose of disparaging another and discounting their worth, and you agree with the statement which is being used to discount that person's worth, you are actively supporting discounting thy person in that instance.

Science is neutral, but that is a lie. Science isn't important. What and how science is used for is, and science's inherent nuetrality doesn't enter Ito the equation.

    That is wry cute~

So would I be correct in surmising it is a LGBTA+ joke?

If so, I can understand a bit of trepidation, but unless the school is completely ineffective and laughably underfunded then they should be a lot better behaved than, say, a 10th grade boys' gym class.
    Hahahaha no.

High school seniors have reputations which are seemingly well-deserved. The only kids who didn't get their phys-Ed requirements out of the way by junior year are those who subscribe really hard to the cult of athleticism, and those who go to school because it's what is done, and they do the bare minimum along the way - including developing as a person.

This is an inherently judgmental statement without much support besides anecdotal evidence though, so feel free to discount it.

I think it's Demetri Martin who has the joke about gays being greedy with the team colors. I saw it in a magazine (Popular Mechanics, Nature—I can't remember) written like that and thought it was cool.

*Nod* To reference Nope's analogy, even an imperfect brake is still a brake. That teacher seemed to imply that both they and the pedals were absent altogether. And that disagreeing somehow challenged that her own were attached.

Science isn't so neutral as it is aligned towards scientists' biases (which usually conflict between any two cases).

Not to sound insincere in my happiness for you, but I would have sworn that you got married last month. Am I remembering correctly or have I managed to get you and someone else mixed up or was that entire discussion all in my imagination?

Got any decent honeymoon plans or just get back from it then?
Nope, didn't get married last month. Just this past Saturday. Not unpleasant, either. Just very aware of the existence of my left hand right now. Honeymoon is yet to be determined.

Well, we've been together for four years. I'm not sure what kind of story you're looking for, but if you want story tell me what kind of story you want and I might be able to tell you.

Hmm. How to oppress the gays today. How to do it. Wait. We had a lesbian in our wedding party in a state where gay marriage is illegal. I think that should count for a few days of oppression, at least.

Now to go back to my diabolical ally ways, sowing mischief and discord in gay safe spaces with my straightness. Bwahahahaha!

Whoa, guys, hold on, let's not be hasty. Some people out there have world dominations plans, you know, and I--er, I mean, they don't want to rule over a radioactive wasteland. Which is of course a topic I know nothing about; I'm just a pair of flaming d6s, how could I possibly take over anything?

(This forum really needs an innocent "Who, me? I don't know what you're talking about..." smiley for times like these.)

Now, giving certain select members of the population a stern talking-to with some sharp implements for some of the stuff they say and do? That I can get behind.
