Default New here. Hoping to try Play by Post D&D

Hello everyone! My name is leoryff (lee-oh-riff), and I have been a fan of OOTS for a few years now. I've also been a fan of D&D style games since my middle school years, but haven't had anyone to play with. Now I am an adult with the internet, but my hectic schedule means I can't always be on time for appointments and meetings in chats or streams. Then I heard about Play by Post, and that giantip.com forums were a good place for it.

Long story short, I'd like to play. Is anyone looking for a new player?

Welcome to the world of pbp D&D! We are glad to have you with us.

I just have a few words of advice that I wish someone told me when I started out.

    1. Unfortunately, there are a lot more potential players then there are GMs. What usually happens is the GM has a recruitment phase where they take applications and make a selection from that. It might take a while for you to get into your first game, so don't be discouraged.

    2. To make your application stand out, I would recommend spending as much time on your character's backstory/history/etc as you do on the mechanical side. Anyone can google "<class> <system> guide" and build a mechanically sound character, but few people take the time to make sure that their character actually fits within the scope or theme of the GM's story.

    3. A lot of pbp games end up folding after a month or so, that's just the nature of the medium. GMs get busy too, and its perfectly reasonable for them to drop their commitments to internet strangers instead of their real life commitments. I found the games that tended to last longer were run by GMs that were good organizers. These were the ones that had a system for running combat (Roll20 is the gold standard imo) , opted for pre-made adventures over trying to come up with their own campaigns and had posting requirements for players (e.g. once every two days) and were willing to enforce them.

    Good luck, and have fun!

I'm actually always recruiting for my play-by-post forum - Warlands. It's free and there are plenty of plots and characters to interact with. You can sign up and post any time you like! Stop on in and feel free to pester me if you have any questions! You'll earn an extra 100 XP if you tell them Sato sent you, too.

Join us at Warlands (A 3.5 D&D RPG Forum) and
Time of Dying (A Zombie Apocalypse Survival RPG Forum)!
