Mafia: The Trapping
All right. The first twenty-four hours of this thread will be spent weathering anything you crazy rules lawyers can throw at the structure of this game, because I'm pretty sure the only reason this concept hasn't been done before is that it's bat**** lunacy.
Also, it's a theme game, but as the theme revolves around one of the most awesome and best-hidden plot twists of all time, hell if I'm going to tell you what the theme is.
The basic premise here is that this is a Mafia so entrenched it'd take one hell of a lever to break it loose. Defend yourself against perceived aggression if you may, but the system will be intact unless every trace is obliterated. (Look, it's Mafia. Lynchings gotta happen.)
Town roles:
*Vanilla Townies.
*Reporter: See official rules for Night Watchman.
*Doctor: As per the usual.
*State Policeman: Functions as a cop, but fairly nerfed because of the large number of Mafia members who read as innocent. This character's main duty is to find the Trapper, who will read as the Trapper, not as either Mafia or Town. The night after they find the Trapper, the SP gets the option to establish contact with them, and they'd be a fool not to.
*Trapper: An infiltrator in the Mafia. It's useless and thus forbidden for them to reveal the roles of the other Mafia members; the premise here is that everyone already knows, but can't do a fat lot about it until the Trapper completes their work. If they have a free night (see below), they will attempt to read people of the Town. If they find the Doctor, they may use the next free night's action to establish contact with them, and from that point forward, every free night of theirs will be a night the night-kill fails. If they find the SP, they are practically obligated to establish contact at the first opportunity. When the Trapper and the SP have established contact, they can conduct the Trapping the next night, which is an instant win condition for the Town.
Mafia roles:
* Godfather: See standard rules. Reads as innocent.
* Respected Citizens: Half of the Mafia aside from the Godfather, rounding up, will start the game reading as innocent if investigated by the State Policeman.
* Mafia Goons.
Night action priority order:
Doctor>NK>Trapping>Everything Else, Which Should Not Conflict
General rules:
* Both the Trapper and the SP must be alive for the Trapping to take place. If one of them is night-killed on the night of the Trapping, that's an automatic win for the Mafia.
* This Mafia suffers from groupthink. Anybody claiming to be the Trapper or the Doctor will be automatically night-killed, whether or not that person is in the Mafia. It will stack onto any other nightkills the Mafia had planned. In this case, the GM message will assume that the person killed was indeed the Trapper or the Doctor.
* Half the Mafia (rounding down) participates in any given night-kill, and half stays behind to provide alibis for the rest. If the Trapper stays behind, they may pursue other night actions. The Godfather will decide which half is which.
* Anybody recognizing this theme who says anything about it more Googlable than the phrase "dear me" (hint: it's probably not a good idea to say "dear me") will have their actions frozen for the following night and the day after that.
* The same goes for bloodless metagaming terms like "FoS" and "scumtell". You can use the concepts, but I feel like the distillation takes something away from the drama. Deal with it.Last edited by DomaDoma; 2011-07-10 at 12:09 PM.

Re: Mafia: The Trapping
...Oh what the hell, why not? I'm in. I probably won't do too much, seeing as the only time I was actually useful was JotTARDIS3 where I was the Doctor and came up with an awesome-ass plan to find River which resulted in the Broken Angel dying on the second day. The other times I played, I got auto'd.

Re: Mafia: The Trapping
Ah, sorry I didn't come in and edit these rules earlier. (Flea, the rule about the claims now stacks with other nightkills.) I've been busy with similar activities, including some massive cognitive dissonance provided by your typical buzzkilling historians, but anyway, I'm back now.
Does sixteen to twenty players sound reasonable?Last edited by DomaDoma; 2011-07-10 at 12:22 PM.

Sign me up! This looks crazy fun.
EDIT: And, y'know, the person who came up with the crazy awesome plan that shut us angels down in JotTardis is in this, and I want a rematch (that game never did come to a conclusion).Last edited by Lord Loss; 2011-07-10 at 04:21 PM.

Re: Mafia: The Trapping
I'll be away until the 22nd (or thereabouts), and while I might be able to get a vote in, it would be great if you could not auto-lynch, lynch, or NK me.

Re: Mafia: The Trapping
If you don't understand the second-to-last rule, chances are very low that you're going to break it. And on closer inspection, it seems like the last rule is much more of an issue in Mafia than it is in Werewolf, even Werewolf as played by people who dissect the D&D mechanics of every panel of their chosen webcomic, but good examples would be "wagoning" and "self-bane".
Don't blame me. I voted for Kodos.

Re: Mafia: The Trapping
Thanks. I panicked when I couldn't find The Town, but apparently it's called Free Form Roleplaying now (kids these days). Apart from that, it seems that not much has changed.
Unfortunately, that means I'll probably end up getting killed in the first day.
