Jonathan Coulton. Who's a fan? Or going to see him live soon?
Jonathan Coulton, that notespinning maestro of the internet, father of the portal ending song (still alive) and many others is playing live soon in Europe. So I was wondering if anyone from this fine forum is going to see him live? I'm off to see him a week on Thursday in Manchester.
Or if not, who here's a fan of the songs he does?

I've seen him live 4 times now. They've all been damn fine shows (or else I wouldn't have come back). You're in for a treat if he brings Paul and Storm with him.

Then I'm in for a treat! As he is. It's a pity I missed it last year, as Neil Gaiman came onstage as well.

Love this guy. Especially "Re: Your Brains". Shame I'm not in Europe.

Listening to RE: Your Brains at the moment, coincidentally. I adore him.

Not going to fly across the pond to see him, but he's good enough to see if he came to the area. Let us know how the show is!

Saw him when he came to LA last. Goddamn fantastic show, and this is coming from someone who truly hates concerts.
Whole thing was a top-notch display of banter, music, and showmanship. Oh, and Will Wheaton had a cameo. So that was cool.

I have managed to be a fan since very shortly after Thing A Week was finished, but have not seen him live yet...I really want to. He's one of my favorite artists.

I am a big fan of Jonathan Coulton and I have to say that I'm Your Moon maybe one of the most romantic songs I have ever heard.

Re: Jonathan Coulton. Who's a fan? Or going to see him live soon?
I'm a huge fan of his and a admirer. He had the courage to quit his job and make money from his passion. He's also a big supporter of Creative Commons, which is a great alternative to regular copyright.
I've been to six performances of his; Paul and Storm are definitely an integral part of the Jonathan Coulton concert experience. They banter well with him and are a great warm-up act. Their music is more straight-forward humorous, rather than Coulton's more heartfelt humor. Paul and Storm and Coulton riff off each other well and I like how they add some harmonies to a few of his songs.
I think my favorite, non-traditional Coulton song is "Better", which features quite possibly the best line in a song:
"You look like the victim of a surgical crime/a little Darth Vader, a little Optimus Prime"
P.S. I have the luck of living in Paul and Storm's stomping grounds, so we tend to get two live performances or so a year.

Re: Jonathan Coulton. Who's a fan? Or going to see him live soon?
I love his music! Currently listening to "The Presidents". I have never seen him live, but I hope to if he ever comes near me! My favorite non-hugely popular song (i.e. "Still Alive", "Code Monkey", "Skullcrusher Mountain", "Re: Your Brains") is probably "Kenesaw Mountain Landis" (very singable, funny, no chorus, completely messes up what actually happened). I also like "Chiron Beta Prime," "I'm Your Moon," and "Mandlebrot Set".
Edit: And "Curl". I like that a lot because he takes a sport that almost no one would think of writing a song about, and writes one! And it turned out well!

So no-one from here's off to see him tomorrow then? Fair enough, if you do happen to be going PM me, or try and find me at the gig. I'll be the guy in an XKCD t-shirt that has lots of love hearts and equations on, and shoulder length blonde/brown/red hair.

John and Storm? ;) Are you sure it wasn't Paul and Storm? ;)
I'd like to see Jonathan Coulton with his ukulele playing cohorts. Considering I'm on the East Coast, I'd probably see Kristen Shirts rather than Molly Lewis.

Hard to keep quality high when you're cranking out songs every week. My only complaint is that once he completed thing a week, he hasn't really written anything else that's awesome except for the Portal song, "Still Alive".

I didn't know he was responsible for "Still Alive".
The first song of his I heard was Mandelbrot Set, and it remains my favourite. I Feel Fantastic comes second.

Space Doggity was awesome. And Blue Sunny Day was pretty cool, though not my favorite. I'd rather he take more time so we have less filler. On the other hand I'd rather he spend more time on song writing and less on fan service.
Space Doggity, fwiw was inspired by Bowie's Space Oddity. It's about Laika, the first dog shot into space. I think it was recorded for one of those contests he did with Paul and Storm, but I'm not totally sure of that.

Right, can't believe I forgot Space Doggity. It was for the Masters of Song Fu challenge. Paul and Storm's "Live", done in the style of JoCo, was spot on and I think they deserved the win there.
Collaborator Molly Lewis won the second incarnation of Masters of Song Fu.
