Default Techelp plz?

I have a problem on a different computer in my home. actually, It's two problems, but one we know how to fix. The problem is that this fix requires internet access, and this computer for some reason will not connect to the internet. When I click the shortcut, the internet browser opens, but before it displays anything besides the control bar it closes down. What's wrong with my computer and how do I fix it?

Which computer are you running? Against which operating system? Using which browser? Over broadband? A DSL modem?

Have you tried using a different browser -- if you're using IE, use firefox?

I personally can't offer much help unless I know whether you're using a Mac, a PC running XP or Vista or something else, or even a linux variant.

It's obvious that somehow the browser doesn't like your configuration somehow. If you're on Windows, look at the control panel and check those settings?

But without more specific details, it's impossible for me to offer any really helpful comments. More info, please? Although TBH, your best bet is probably google-fu.

Respectfully,

Brian P.

XP, eh?

Select "control panel". Examine "Network Connections".

Do you have a functional connection?

Once again, I suggest you install Firefox and see if it
has any better luck than IE.

Has IE ever worked on this computer?

"Google-fu" means "Type in a descriptive string into google and
see what answer you get". Honestly, I solve most of my IT
problems that way.

Yes, it has.

Okay, what's changed on the system?

Is it possible that you have Automatic Upgrade active, and Xp installed an OS upgrade, and the new upgrades broke the server?

If so, disable the automatic upgrade installer, go to the control panel, go to 'add / remove software', and fall back your operating system upgrades to a date when IE was still working. Reboot. If it works -- then that was the problem. If not -- re-enable your upgrade s up to your current point.

Installing firefox: Download a Self-installing executable like this one (make sure you get a good version for your platform, that one may not be the right one), get the installation executable onto a thumb drive, transfer it to your computer, then fire it off. That oughta do it.

Respectfully,

Use a restore point to go back in time to when it was working. If that fails use a USB drive to get Firefox as described above. If that fails, post a screen shot of your network connections screen.
