I don't think FireFlower would try and set Luna up with Grills, and if she tried to set Smoothie up, Grills would be horrified, and FireFlower would be polymorphed into a toad for the next six months.

The town runs itself. The mayor is most absent (retired character) and rarely leaves his house.

Anyhoofm the general tone is mostly laid back with on occasion lots of silly antics. Its like the Sims, but with weird stuff happening more frequent.

Personally, I doubt anything Fireflower could say about Dawn's mom would be... Less horrible than the actuality.

She's old (early 50s), a mother, and has a huge yet twisted protector instinct. All the PCs are technically like children to her.

Or it could be retconned that she is so paranoid, she paid for permanent magic vision.

Or she can sense mares of age some how to better find Grills a mate. Didn't have much to insult Dawn on.

I think the magic vision is best, since my question isn't "how did she know Dawn's age" so much as "How did she know Dawn's a pony at all?" Magic fits that, I guess... Though I'm not sure how magic vision works with transformation, not illusion... But I'll worry about it later.

Also, the thing Foxglove's rambling about (besides the idea of non-linear time) is a Zoetrope, an early animation-like device.

You know, it's kinda sad that Fireflower devotes her entire life to defending Equestria, but the things she supposedly prepares herself for fighting she couldn't possibly win against.

Nightmare Moon? No hope. Not anywhere near the same tier.
Discord? You'd need to be an Alicorn with the elements, or be some sort of Outer god to fight him.
Simmer? The most she could do is delay him. The only way to actually defeat him is through love and understanding. It'd surprise me if Fireflower were even capable of a genuine hug.

So, the things she devotes her entire life to being able to fight, she can't fight because she's devoting her life to fighting said things. Kind of a cruel irony.
