Random Banter welcomes you to... Random Banter

Okay, check this out. This is place where you discuss topics that deserve to be brought up, but don't deserve their own thread. It is a place of fun, but also rules. Don't break said rules, kapeesh?

Seriously, don't break the rules. You oughta' be careful cause... things break... it would be a shame if someone were to set fire to those nice paratroops, or if those tanks broke...

No, wait. This is silly. The entire premise is silly.

The rules, as such they are, are spoilered below for your convenience. View them, or else.

As stated above, this thread is for random discussion, not random chit chat. That is to say, this is a forum, not your IM client. People have set up an unofficial IRC chat thingy for that sort of thing. Not only will you not annoy the people here, you will also help increase the popularity of the IRC chat.

Our previous topic, you say? Oh, it was... a mystery!

Why, mademoiselle. We are evil. And as the good Voltaire says... "It's so easy when you're evil..."

It already reached 50 pages.
In other news, I personally have to agree, at least partially, with the idea of graveyard shift being "soul-crushing" (I don't think it literally crushes, or even harms, my soul, but the term stands), at least mine.
I not only work nights, i work through the whole weekend. I barely get to see my friends anymore. I manage to see some people Sundays when I go to church, but not much else. Shoot, I barely even see my family.
That right there makes it worse.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Not so much the actual hours or time of day or length of time served...

But the isolation... It scares me now. I used to be able to just sit in my room for days on end doing nothing but reading. Now... Now I start to fear the shadows and loneliness is my bete noir.

Damned puberty

Also, I am strictly unlovable, Alleine, so it's all good.

Eh? I think I could totally pull the graveyard shift. I might get extremely pissed if people bug me, but I wouldn't mind the loneliness. If loneliness like that mattered to me at this point, I'd be a gibbering wreck.

But working weekends as well? Meh, I likes me my weekends.

For me it's the fact that I hardly ever get to see friends. I don't need to see them everyday or something, but when they're getting ready to go to a movie, I'm almost always like "sorry, I have to work", or "sorry, I have to sleep now, so I can stay conscious on my drive to work and such". And when my church group does fun stuff, stuff I used to be able to do, and I can't anymore...gah.

I would not get on well working nights, I'm a morning person. I fear that zombification would advance very quickly should I ever be forced to become nocturnal.

I just had a strange thought. I know I'm not the first to think about this, but...

Ever wonder why 'racism' is considered a bad thing whereas 'feminism' is (generally) considered positive? I mean, from the construction of these words I can see where it'd be easy to misinterpret the word 'feminism' as being anti-woman.

Perhaps the problem stems from a lack of a better word for the ideology behind the women's equal rights movement. I mean, what other word would you use? Gynophilia? Sounds kinda...squicky.

Um...

Maybe because the negative term is sexism, and it came to mean, like racism, prefering one group?

Humans have this weird tendency when it comes to balancing things to overreact in the opposite direction of what's currently being done after the tactic of underreacting and ignoring the situation fails them.

It's almost like a societal level of the Aristotleian mean....

I'm sure the movements start by just trying to balance, but then there are those that take it way too far. And then by that point the momentums enough to just keep the ball rolling... Though I've heard it compared to a pedulum more.

Either that or they're not satisfied with thier after-victory boredom and want something more to do and bring up. Thus was born the feminazis...

We just dont know where the balancing point is, and we probably never will get there XD

Well, that is the main point of feminism. I suspect that those you refer to as 'feminazis' are a) primarily a creation of the media as part of the backlash to the Second Wave feminists and b) mainly angry because they have realised that despite a hundred years of the sisterhood women are still not equal to men in:
- pay
- political representation
- representation at the boardroom level of companies (or schools, universities, hospital trusts, other public bodies)
- childcare
- reproductive rights
and so on.

But, I don't want to talk about this here. (The political is personal, and the personal is political, but giantitp dislikes the political. So.)

Coidzor, you're back. How many cats own you, then?

To not bring up the political aspects of Feminism, I think the "Feminazis" are the ones that push for past "being equals"...which doesn't mean equal representation. It means that equal consideration. If only 20% a group of people qualified to be in a committee/board/job are women, then it's no one's place to pad it to meet a certain percent.

Depsite having worked where I do for the past three years, I make (on average) $0.75 less per hour than the females that have been there for less than a year. It's a grocery store, so being more qualified doesn't really come into it. I will admit that there's one female manager and 5 males, and one female was barred from management despite being qualified...but that's because the current female manager is a little territorial; I believe the words "I don't care who gets the job as long as it's not a woman" were said.

On reproductive rights...I thought it couldn't really happen without your half of the species; did I miss some big press conference?

I know you don't really want to talk about it because of political aspects (I don't believe it is unless you talk about the actual movement), but feel free to PM me...I'm especially curious on the last point.

From a construction point of view, though, that wouldn't really make sense. Sexism doesn't mean anti-sex or anti-gender. Racism doesn't mean anti-race. Therefore, why would feminism mean anti-woman?

And, as someone pointed out, -ism doesn't denote whether something is good or bad.

Is existentialism bad? Is it anti-existence?

But yes, the English language is a strange mistress.

On the subject of cats...I've got two!

AND, the new Google favicon bothers me. It's too colorful! And, as someone pointed out, it's same colors and order of the Windows logo (just rotated a little bit).

What about? For what class?

Creative writing or essay writing? I'm assuming the former, since you seem to be happy about it.

Unless it's internet sarcasm.

Go internet sarcasm!
