I thought "c" was the hypotenuse, and "a" and "b" were the other sides. And that the actualy equation was a2+b2=c2.

It doesn't matter what letters you use, they can stand for anything. I learnt it first with x, y and z. And the caret (^) is used to indicate ^superscript, and hence exponentials, when superscript is unavailable, or you're feeling lazy.
