And, I'm leaving the U.S. for at least 3 months come November, heading for Kazakhstan, where I won't have much Internet access, and what I have will be used for business.

You know... I've always known it was a real place, but for some reason, deep inside my brain there's a part of me that keeps thinking there's no way Kazakhstan is a place. The same goes with Azerbaijan.

Yes, it's a real place . I've been here six or seven times now, I believe. I can't say that it's the most scenic area of the world I've ever been to; the Internet certainly isn't great; and you're well advised to use a water filter for drinking water.
But, it's not so bad as a place to visit, as long as you avoid the summer (which is lethally hot). Of course, I may be biased since my wife's relatives live here, so there's some hospitality on offer when we're in the vicinity.
