The old thread has fallen past the necromancy limit, so...

Snow by Night: A Tale of Colonial Fantasy
The beginning
Most recent page

I know that the artist lurks around here, so... I just wanted to say that the effect of the snow blown out the exit wound last page is really cool, and beautifully rendered.

Also, Snow didn't seem so angry about Our Antiheroes using fire against her.

They used fire to corner her and prevent her from fleeing, but not to directly attack her.

The snow effect on the exit wound was done by our colorist Natalie Baaklini. She's incredibly good.

As for Blaise and Jassart using fire in the museum on Snow-by-Night, just wait for it. Payback on that is coming.

So, what are the odds that this will be a sufficient catalyst for someone to actually explain to Snow what a heart is (in the sense she's seeking) and what's involved in getting one? And that she'll believe that explanation when she gets it?

If anyone associated with the comic reads this, know that I love it. The art is fantastic, the setting wonderfully fleshed out (I loved the tale of winter punishing the trees) and the characters are good too. But that one thing above really annoyed me.

I...uh....I have a feeling this is going to end badly for our lovable rogues....

I really love the current page (Ch5, pg25); Snow by Night looks so wintery

And I really wasn't bothered by that point, Boci -- while it's obviously a bad idea to try to trick Snow from our vantage point, it seems very in-character for Blaise and Jassart.

Yeah, you're right, Boci. It was not the smartest thing to do. But Blaise isn't the smartest guy around and Jassart has ... trust issues.

Thank you for the kind words on the art. I'll pass them along to Brittany and Naty.

Tis true! I do lurk at times C: Thanks for the kind words, it's always encouraging to know people like what I do. And a bit of encouragement goes a long way when you stay in a cave and work without seeing the sun for days XP I'm woking on the concepts for Chapter 6. Mostly everyone is getting a bit of a makeover and we get to explore several new places in the city. Thank you all who read Snow by Night <3

Chapter 6 "A Light in the Darkness" begins today. I hope you all enjoy it. We learn a lot more about the Great Spirits (i.e., gods) of Corthis in this chapter.

You're in luck then. The Great Spirits will be the subject of several almanac entries, as well as having a crucial role in this chapter. I'll cover Giavere of the Moon for sure, and probably Thaust the Glorious, Halroun the Golden, Taliesin the Evensong, and Dama the lost lady of luck.

I expected she would be the one to finally point it out. Jassart doesn't care and Blaise isn't very good at thinking about this sort of thing.

So, I guess Blaise paid no attention at all to the line "She thinks her heart is a thing to be found like a lost shoe."

Jassart picked up on her hilariously wrong assumption instantly. He probably understood just as quickly what would really be needed to bring the heart hunting expedition to a successful conclusion. Too bad he considers the whole thing a nuisance and too much work.

I just want to say that this is really, really awesome -- apart from some slight idiomatic French issues. For example (and this is really the only glaring one), while "excusez-moi" does, in fact, mean excuse me, it's used by native speakers to mean "excuse me for butting in to this conversation," or "excuse me, could I have your attention?"

"Kindly get the hell out of my way" is "pardon."

If the author sees this and wants me to check the French, I'd be glad to.
If the author is a native French speaker, then I sincerely apologize, as clearly I was lead astray by a teacher.

Thank you, Belisarius. Alas, I only have rudimentary knowledge of French -- something that I intend to fix starting this year. In the interim, I've been relying on my French Braintrust which consists of our editor and two Québécois friends whom I pester constantly. For the Québec slang, I've been relying on "French Fun: The Real Spoken Language of Québec" by Steve Timmins.

Sometimes things slip through the cracks. If you want to flag anything for my attention, please send me an email at eric (at) snowbynight.com. I would greatly appreciate any input you have.

Thanks for reading!

Oh, it's Québécois? I thought they were speaking French. I'm joking, of course, but if it's a Québécois dialect you're going for, I'm completely unqualified to judge the accuracy of it, and your text is probably right.

pbbbbbbtttttt! :-) If you want to really annoy a Frenchman, point out that Montréal is the second largest French-speaking city in the world. He'll twist up his nose and say "That's not French!" At least that's how one of my Parisian friends responded. heh heh heh.

Could you send me the page reference for the "excusez-moi"? I'll run it by my French Brain Trust. I already corrected one error that suck by us. I used seigneur as "my lord" when I should have used messire. C'est la vie.

Bear in mind, I could be completely off-base with the "s'excuser vs. pardon" issue. It's been a while since a teacher mentioned it.

@Belisarius. I spoke to the French brain trust about the Pardon/Excusez-moi issue. Éloise responded:

Quote:
Both are good. I use both in fact. Excusez-moi is more proper, pardon is more common. Like Thank you and thanks. They are both ok and use by everyone. I hope it helps you. :) May be in France pardon is more use..
I was going for a more formal tone with Blaise because I thought the juxtaposition of being very formal while barreling through people was funny. Sort of how Bugs Bunny apologies to all the people in the movie theatre as he steps on their heads while running from Elmer Fudd.

Thank you for the flag on the issue. If you see anything else that catches your eye, please let me know.

This little exchange on pardon vs. excusez-moi reminds me of a page in a Franco-Belgian BD (forgot which exactly, sorry) where a character elbows his path through a crowd while repeating "pardon, excusez-moi, désolé"...

Yep, using both (and more!) at the same time.
