I have to ask: Am I the only one who bought marshmellow peeps (a la http://www.giantitp.com/comics/erf0015.html), and kept them in cupboard for months and months, waiting for them to go stale, crunchy and delicious? Having never heard of these (we didn't have them in the UK). So when I saw them one day in the shops, I jumped at the chance to buy them, eagerly waiting for them to ripen!
For those that did not, let me save you the trouble: They don't go crunchy. Some of the sugar round the outside crystallizes, but that's about all you can expect.
In this one regard, Erfworld has let me down. In all others though, it has blown my tiny little mind. So I guess it's a plus overall!
Because, a Peep connoisseur such as myself will tell you, they almost never go stale in the box. They add so many preservatives that in their little box, they remain soft anf fluffy almost forever.
But poke some holes in the plastic...
Mm...
They get all crispy and crunchy and chewy. Works better in a dry area (UK is a bit more humid than the California desert, so it would happen faster for me), and they don't get crunchy like, say, the marshmallows in Lucky Charms, they do have a distinct crunchyness, while the inside becomes more like light saltwater taffy.
Just so ya know.

Dude, get some holes in that box. The three best time frames are within a week of opening (starting the next day), after a month, and the classic three month mark.
Of course, a few fresh ones are good too.
And with Halloween coming up, Peeps Jack O Lanterns are just around the corner!
Then Peeps Christmas Trees, then Peeps Hearts, then the classic Chicks and Bunnies we all love!

with the exception of me. I hate peeps. also Valentine's day oddly.
although I'm going to try stale peeps anyway. hmm. I don't think my neighborhood gives out pumpkin shaped peeps. ah well. I trade all my syrupy/ marshmallow based candy for chocolate stuff anyway.
You also need to keep them in a dry place(although that's probably obvious).

That's never happened to you?

This thread has me salivating...*drools*
Yes, I know that I changed the exact context, but still. If you are offended by this... sorry.

I'm more of a 3-month man myself.

Don't forget vanilla heart Valentine's Day peeps! While completely delicious (peeps are my all-time favorite candy), I've never tried them crunchy....

I did say Peeps Hearts, right after Christmas Trees. Man... I want some peeps...

There's nothing like a fresh, hot, near-liquid marshmallow coated in just-caramelized sugar. DELICIOUS.
Never actually acquired the taste, though I guess being marshmallow-ian(?) in nature, they'd be good flaming.
My extent with peeps was an interesting foray when I was in my Microwavable Chemistry phrase. Let's just say you can't eat them afterward, but I discovered the Megalo-Gwiff.
With as fast as they put out Christmas stuff here in the US, those tree peeps might just be read in time for Christmas morning.
