I thought the same thing. It is for this reason I suggest a 1% spell "failure" wherein the summoned object becomes a pot of Intelligent petunias.

Next on my homebrew list, elemental plane of anvils.
This thing is getting so long that I'm considering making it a metamagic feat; bonus damage and grapple might be worth a +1 spell level.

I think this is a good idea.
I feel it would work smoother in general as a metamagic feat.
But my group of players have a few physics buffs who... well, do math at things, and then make them break.
