If the Ditto'ed Slately isn't permanent, the Dittomancer is the only thing keeping Jetstone going right now...could be a plot point waiting to happen there!
They were powerful aye, but that'll happen when a caster novas their juice.
+1
He could do that and help his side without riding off on a Uni, and after doing it, he may well have been useless: completely spent.
Tangent: I was wondering what might happen if Wanda got back and decrypted Slately (and Cubbins, too, for that matter), but I expect there is no chance of that with the portal gone and the bodies vanishing by the start of the next day.

Yeah, I know. If he wanted to use the rest of his power for that day on a blast, then he could've, and still flown away.
But the main fact against it, the fact that makes it worse to nova and let a couple archers survive, is that even with Spacerock's fall, Jetstone still survives, and while an extra couple of archers would've only serves to help take down an Archon, Cubbins could've helped Ace build more accessories, which would definitely have helped more towards reclaiming Spacerock or attacking weaker Gobwin Knob cities.

A long-term setback only matters if they survive the short-term. As far as we can tell, Duty compelled him to sacrifice himself to improve short-term survival odds.

On the one hand, he as a caster was the next best thing to useless in combat - he could cast, but not dish out/block hits in an engagement. If Slately failed to make it out of the hex, there would be no future for Jetstone, and he would have failed his Duty. On the other hand, Cubbins remaining behind to dump his entire remaining combat value (his juice) in one blast while an archer who would otherwise be dead escapes in his place to add its combat value to the engagement might allow Slately to fight free of the city. It's coldly mathematical, especially because it means reducing himself and his own life to a variable in the equation, but it makes sense.
EDIT: Ninjaed more succinctly.

Eh, fine. We don't really know much about how Cubbins' discipline (which I can't remember, have to go look it up) works. For all we know, he could shoot a bunny out of his hat every turn for half the juice it took for each bunny he shot out when he used them all at once.
And now that I'm done, I guess I'm going to have to study the basics of the world in Parson's Klog in Book 1 more closely, since all I remember is that two of the three things that define the world (or something like that) are Erf and Fate.

Cubbins was a Hat magician, which basically translates to "summoner". IIRC, the last one is Motion, but that could be wrong. EDIT: that is indeed a doombat. I wonder whether Jetstone has already fallen, and how dittomancy mucks with that.

One other thing about Cubbin's sacrifice. In his "curtain call" page, it looks very much like he's firing off every last bit of tower defenses, similar to what Wanda did vs the Archons in TBFGK. His Duty probably prompted him to be the one to stay behind to do that, since Lloyd, Pierce, and Ace all had higher combat value in a straight up fight, and if nobody else did, the tower spells would have been completely wasted. Getting a few more archers mounted was just him trying to stack the odds even more.

I wish it explained what deck of cards you use. Playing cards? Pokemon cards? Business cards? I'll bet a Wells Fargo vice-president business card is worth more points than a McDonald's district manager business card.

It seems that Haffaton is so over the "Deminising Schmuckers Point" that all they can afford is uncroaked and plants. I assume both don't need upkeep. I guess the plants are Olive branch's work?
If (when) Wanda turns, will it really BE plants vs Zombies???

My guess is that it's Wanda herself. We know she is working for Faq at some point from the story Jillian told back in volume 1, and I'm thinking that this is where she gets captured.

Why would Wanda be all the way out in a dinky lv2 city and not in or near the capital (or major city)? She is a caster and very valuable (and powerfull). Not saying your wrong but it does not make sense at the moment.
