Day 1

Two years since the crash. Left my family bankrupt. Left everyone bankrupt.

So, in order to survive, my family took to the street, peddling their wares when they would not normally do. This has had some good and bad.

For selling our goods, we gain friendships that could help us in tight spots. Not only that, a tidy bit of cash for food. Every little bit helps.

But we also gain unwanted attention. Half of my reletives from two years ago perished due to mobs.

But I swear! Despite all complaints, these potions, charms, and such work!

Why else did a week after my most powerful love potion disapeared, a pair of lovers became rumored?

Why, after a shipping incident with an attempted thief, Fontaine's Fishery accused me of accidentally protecting the fish from being caught?

Why, despite years, have I been able to see things in my cracked crystal ball?

And how else would I be able to perfect my knockout-potion?

Walker's Wares now sits quietly at a street corner, with myself, Walker, on the chair behind the makeshift booth, watching potential customers pass by.

TheLaughingMan... He owns Fontaine's Fishery, and would cause some buisness problems if he moved against me. And hey, I need to earn some cash to eat.

_______

An odd man behind a both sits, watching people go by. Wears a cloak, and has a walking staff leaning on the booth. The sign above the booth says 'Walker's Wares'.

*The llama walked the city streets, putting up posters advertising the big fight that was coming up. Times were tough and that meant that business was good. The more miserable people were the more they loved watching two schmucks beating the guano out of each other in a boxing ring. *

Of course, he couldn't believe that someone had been starting rumors that he rigged the fights. It was preposterous. If the fights were fixed the boys, didn't beat each other as hard or for as long. He assumed that mangosta71 had been the one to start those rumors, but had no way of proving it.

There was a rule about gangsters. They were tough, they were mean, and they didn't take gruff from anyone.

Mortimer Keyes didn't fit into the general rules for gangsters. Tall and spindly, with a habit of "talkin' with airs," as Gray Mage once said to him, he ran a small funeral parlor with his sons.

But he was a gangster, make no mistake about that. The penny awfuls loved tales of bodies being dumped in swamps, or fed into woodchippers, but that was all they were: stories. The best place for a body was in a casket. Not necessarily their own casket, of course. When a family was already putting a body in the ground, who cared if another joined it?

Most gangsters made bodies, but Mortimer? He erased them, without ever interrupting his tea time.

OOC: Sorry, just a random first point. Gotta love Day One!

Why me? Why does opening a sandwich store involve so much money? Is everyperson in this city a member of some crime ring?

Henry Fredrick, local manger of Upways flips the sign of the store from close to open.

Just another day.

These days seem to happen quite often.

Nothing happens, except the worst.

Mobsters runnin' around everywhere. Sometimes they bring a knife, sometimes they bring a gun. Sometimes they go to the hospital, sometimes they go to the morgue.

Of course, me? I'm not in charge of the morgue. That would have been too easy. I'm in charge of the bloody hospital, pun completely intended.

I get to sit around, tending to the patients, occasionally just waiting for them to die. It's not like I can do much else. Medicine is piss-poor these days. And I can never get proper funding. The least we can do is free up some space for the next patient. These days, that's a lot of patients.

Hopefully Grlump The Elder can just kick the bucket soon. He's old enough as it is.

Times were tough for some. For Ramsus not as much. Sure he had had to close down a few businesses but that was just a lessening of his profits. A hard drink was still hard to find but with the way this town was he could practically deal in those publicly. Of course he was no fool and knew not to put all his eggs in one basket. He'd been looking in to other commodities that needed providing and there were always a host of other schemes and deals available to a man such as himself. He sat back in his favorite leather chair and fanned himself with a stack of cold hard cash brought in from cold hard liquor, 101(jir) dollars to be precise, while looking out his window taking in the town.

Today was more or less average. Twelve customers in all, with a net profit of $10.37. It's getting to be less and less each day, but I guess fishing is becoming an old hat anyways. Some loser tried to pay with sourdough1, but dealing with the protection's got me thinking harder than that. I've always been thinking hard these days. But there are only so many day-dreams I'll waste my time on before reality drags me back. It's for the best. Dreaming ain't gonna solve my problems. I doubt anything could.

The protection's been making a fuss about my payment. Hatchetmen've2 been showing up whichever way I turn. Gotta buy more locks.

My 'neighbor' doesn't look like he's fairing better. The crumb3 keeps rambling about magic and how he's some damn 'world traveler.' 'Eternal Drifter', eh? Maybe the twit's on to something. Not the magic, I mean about the protection. He's too... smiley. Clowns have less disturbing glee. Must remember to keep an eye out.

1: Counterfeit money.
2: Mobster henchmen
3: A loser. (sorry)

Bash sat down with a coke it was hot humid and he was miserable.... Everything had been so boring up until recently no action, but now? O things were starting to become interesting, he reached into his pocket and pulled out his lucky coin, with a quick toss and catch he slipped it back into his pocket... It was time to get some work done, downing the coke he stood left the money on the counter and headed out.

Default Re: Mafia XI - 1931 - Day 1

Morning. By the time morning began, I'd already been working for three hours, give or take a half. The job was typical for the type, organized from the top down and filled from the bottom up. It used to be different - not better, perhaps, but different to be sure; there was a system, things worked - none of this constant paranoia about who worked for whom and who really worked for whom.

I cracked the knuckles of one over sized ham fist with the other, took a moment to adjust the suit - no matter how the tailors swore it was custom fit, it always seemed just a bit too tight in the cuffs, and it rubbed. It was one more thing to make a man irritable, like the temperance movements. When you dry out the city and it just becomes an easier target for arsonists.

An excellent example of this case would be that structure over there, with the black smoke pouring out of the windows. It used to be an observatory; with the various evictions, power plays and redevelopment attempts, it soon was given a new defintion - a control point. Whoever controlled the building had excellent line of sight to much of the surrounding neighborhood - and now it looked like that ownership was changing hands as clear as the fact that I was regarding a Firey Tower. Given the lack of sirens blazing, I had to presume someone had paid off the local fire department to 'not notice' - at least long enough to avoid anything that might be considered incriminating.

A sharp left off the main road and onto a side street. I let myself in through the back door with the key, closed it up quiet behind and relocked it. Now the waiting game began...

March 1, 1931

Dear Vinnie,

Man, I've hardly been in this town a month, and already it's been givin' me the creeps. My second cousin on my mother's side owns this barber shop, Ruby's, and on my very first day as a barber, some lugs come bursting in and whack my third customer of the day. The guy whose hair I was in the middle of cutting. Just ran up, held the poor old geezer down (I was real lucky like, seeing as how I had just stepped away to sharpen my razor and all) - and they just shoved a knife into his chest and then slit open his throat just as easy as you please. Scowled and then strolled out like it was nothin'. Nobody reacted much, either; took a long time for anyone to call the cops, and then I had to clean the blood off of the chair myself. Man, was that a gruesome job. I couldn't stop thinking about that poor sap and wondering what he'd done to deserve that.

Now every time I come to work, all I can think about is how "Ruby" was the color of that guy's blood, and I catch myself wondering if the next guy's blood will be the same color or some other shade. My cousin tells me "fugeddaboudit" and that these connected guys tip well and have really helped keep the shop afloat in these tough times, and that I'd better keep my mouth shut and not nip off anyone's ear on accident, or I might meet the same fate as the geezer. Gave me a chill thinking that my cousin might be connected to gangsters. How come in my first real job out of barber school I gotta end up in a place like this? I'd be outta here in a minute if there was any work available anywhere else.

Not only that, but this one guy I had today was real surly-like. I thought I was doing a great job, trimmed him up real nice, but he just kept muttering under his breath and giving me the evil eye. I think he was saying my name, "memetics," like he was gonna flip out and stab me with my own scissors, which made me shudder (so much so I almost dropped my open scissors onto his ear), though he could just as easily have been saying "ramsus," whoever that is. Wish I knew why he was so pissed, but I couldn't hear anything else he was saying. Next time this guy Deathslayer7 comes in, I hope one of the other barbers gets him. I'd hate the next gush of blood I get to see to be my own, just cause I got unlucky and drew the psycho who decided today was a good day to kill his barber, ya know?

Say hello to your sister for me, and give my love to my mom and pops. Tell 'em I'll do my best not to come home in a box.

-memetics

P.s. Scratch that last part about the box. Last thing I want is mom to go all weepy thinking about my funeral before there's any real need to worry. -m

OOC: random pick, just based on the fact that Deathslayer7 day-1 voted with just a name and no RP. ;-) (I could be convinced to change vote later, tho, especially since I'm the newbie.) (Edit: whoops; someone else voted for him while I was typing. Not trying to start a bandwagon!)

The streets, a dangerous place for a man these days, especially a man without a home or a job. Still, at least the doorway of the morgue is nice and warm for a tramp to sleep in... If only other vagrants and Eternal Drifters didn't try and steal my patch...

The Lady in Black, as she is called by superstitious school children, sits in her flat, playing music every day. The haunting sounds of the piano drift out, fueling the stories told by the neighborhood kids. She never speaks to anyone, always pays in cash. No one knows her name, or where she came from, or when she got there. She always wears clothes in various shades of black and a veil over her face, like she is in a constant state of mourning.

The young idealists say she is in mourning for the City.
The older folks whisper that she is perpetually grieving a lost love.
The children whisper that she is a monster with a face so hideous, she keeps it covered so that your eyes don't explode. Because she eats the eyes, of course - they are squishy and tasty.

The only thing anyone knows for sure is that she is sad...and she lives in the place the Meyers brothers used to inhabit.

((HappyTurtle for sowing fake excitement on Day 1.))

Come to America, they said. Land of opportunity, they said. Make it big, they said. Too bad they didn't tell me that everyone 'ere was a bloody mobster.

'ow's a guy like me supposed to break in if everyone's connected? I can't whack a guy for fear of reprisal, anything I steal just gets taken back as "tribute," and I 'aven't been in a non-fixed poker game in weeks.

The only action I get these days is this bare-knuckle fightin' match ran by some Masked LLama. I dunno... I'm thinkin' I should'a never left the 'Merry Olde'.

As I walked down the road, I heard the talk of the town. Seems that all the work I'd put in to get aboard that ship had been for nothing. Now two mobs were going around and killing people! On top of that, it was only the dames and gents of that darned ship that were getting targeted by the lynch mob, and that's what it was, no doubt, a freaking lynch mob.

Ah well, at least I still have some things in life. Like, say, Vintage the falcon. That bird is one heck of a companion. In a way, he's a little like me - a lone wolf (or falcon), out for himself and the few he trusts and/or relies on. If something happened to either of us, the other'd be upset, but they'd get over it pretty quickly.

But it seemed that the time for banter was over. Now, all we could do was try to work out who the bad guys were. How any of us were supposed to know anything at this point was beyond me - unless, of course, some of us were bad guys ourselves. Which we were. Damn!

Where to start... well, drifters could be trouble, and there was some guy over there saying he was an Eternal Drifter. He seemed like a good place as any to start.

In a little-traveled corner of the city....

A ragged looking man emerges from the police box.

"Well, I guess I might as well relax a bit while Amy and Rory are off on their honeymoon. The advantages of time travel. I may as well take a year or two off before I go and get them. Hang on, this doesn't look like Cardiff. Where am I now?"

He walks to one of the main streets, and stops Alarra.

"Excuse me! Excuse me madam, but could you tell me where exactly I am?"

Swords, get your fine, handmade swords here!

Oh, hello, I didn't see you come in. My name is Amadeus Shimon. Such an interesting place, this city-- everyone seems to know everyone-- but some people just don't seem right. As if something was amiss. I'm probably imagining things. Still, if you're worried might I interest you in a sword-- anachronistic? The only thing anachronistic around here is GrlumpTheElder-- as I was saying, might I interest you in a sword for your protection? Who makes all these you ask? I do. And I practice with them three hours per day. Someone once told me-- I forget his name, but it was something birdy-sounding-- I ought to find myself a girl. Ha! The only bride I need is Matilda, my finest blade-- and not for sale mind you!-- I would die without her...

((I'm not on the street, dearie. ))

The office was dim, a green shaded lamp casting a small circle of illumination onto what was probably a desk, though it had been blanketed with several dictionaries worth of papers for so long that she doubted even its owner had ever seen the surface. From the doorway, if you ignored the papers, the room cried wealthy male. Rich dark woods and chocolate leathers drew the eye back to shelves artfully stocked with leather-bound volumes and small tasteful statues.

From her perch on the edge of the desk chair, Alarra could see a thick layer of dust coating the shelves she knew were just for show. She shifted carefully, trying not to snag her expensive (or at least expensive looking) satin gown on one of the many cracks the old leather now sported.

The door clicked and she looked up expectantly, taking a long drag on her slim cigarette, dainty in its silver holder. The smoke puffed out in almost lazy rings to frame the man that had just entered. "You're late."
