1) No PVP please. We're using a medium which already slows the game down and gives you pretty much complete animosity. I don't want you guys wasting time by beating each other up. Having IC squabbles/arguements/etc is encouraged however.
2) Sex exists but it's a sort of wink and fade to black. We don't need any more than that.
3) Any OOC comments and rolls I'd like posted in a spoiler at the end of your post. I find it helps immersion to separate IC from OOC actions this way.
4) Monster stats will be stored in an excel sheet. I'll post more later.
5) If you post an action which requires a roll of some sort without knowing it requires a roll I will be making the roll for you.
6) Use whatever die roller you're comfortable with as long as it's fairly mainstream (ie: so I don't have to register to see them and so we know you didn't build it yourself).
7) I post every week day and expect all of you to try and maintain this following as well. Out of battle will have some leeway but in battle if you don't post within 24 hours of my DM post your turn will be taken for you.
In addition I'm Canadian and my holidays may not completely line up with yours. I don't expect you to post on your holidays though, even if mine don't line up.
8) Try to let me know in advance if you'll be absent for any reason.
After a suspicious avalanche wrecks a trade caravan the party (Matrim,Goresh,Ravinna,Illyrion) joins forces to help Elric and his son Peter climb the mountain path to Brixham in order to be present for the birth of Elric's new child. Elric tells the party about a temple he uncovered roughly 10 years ago which is directly under the city. This is how he got his wealth. He notes the caves go much deeper but they haven't searched them.
En-route the party encountered Pirrett and a shifter named Kalek (who joins them). Kalek seems to have some connection with the Drow. Pirrett intended to destroy a bridge while the party was on it but was outwitted and settled for 'collapse the bridge' instead after the battle went south.
The party reached Brixham, atop a set of cliffs but found they would have to scale the cliffs as the ramps leading up to Brixham had been destroyed. Instead, the party opted to take a route through a nearby cave complex called The Spider Caves where they fought off some spiders, learned about a 'Spider Queen' who apparently speaks and safely made it to Elric's basement and by extension, Brixham.
It turns out Brixham was in pretty dire straits. They reported being assaulted by Drow from below and a Bulette constantly, being unable to leave the town for any reason. Only the party's recent conflict with the Bulette seems to have driven it off temporarily. The party agrees, under a paid contract to find the source and defeat the drow menace below the town. In addition, the party is given a sub contract to defeat one pesky Bulette as well.
Ravinna uncovers a journal in the spider caves which mentions Pirrett's name along with something to do with the spiders. It also sheds some light on the drow, showing that they're a male tribe of drow who were thrown out by their female counterparts. Female dr
In the morning, after staying at the Fancy Duck the party finds the town under attack by all manner of creature with Pirrett in the thick of things riding his Bulette. Using expert tactics the party unseats and knocks Pirrett out. As soon as Pirrett is knocked out all the creatures attacking the city sort of 'come to' and leave. The party concludes that Pirrett can control the beasts somehow.
Taking Pirrett prisoner the party questions him and finds out:
- Pirrett reports to someone named Elder Lembath
- Pirrett apparently has 'brothers', possib
- Pirrett recognises the journal Ravinna is carrying. Ravinna marks a few pages with the worth 'Lembath' in them.
- The group learns there is an attack arranged on 'some surface kingdom nearby' and that the caves lead there.
- Pirrett was charged to cause a friction in Brixham to distract from the activity.
- In the relation regarding Kalek, Pirrett apparently wasn't the only one who did something 'That Night'. He claims someone else was 'the brains', someone from the inside.
- The drow have an army which is on it's way and consists of sword fighters, archers and some spell casters.
- The male drow are pretty pissed at the women who cast them out.
- He has three brothers who have unique gifts granted to them by someone he calls 'His greatness'. Pirrett admits to being able to control any manner of beasts.
- The Bulette lives somewhere in the caves.
- His Greatness is some god who took pity on the male drow and has no particular name beyond 'His Greatness'
- Basically the male drow wish to start their own kingdom to spite Lolth who favours the women. They're apparently attacking other kingdoms for this however. This is all part of the plan 'His Greatness' set out.
The party leaves Pirrett in his cell and heads underground, stopping first at the temple Elric has told them so much about. After some investigation and some prodding the party figures out there's a puzzle hidden under the luminous moss on the ceiling and manages to enact a ritual which 'powers up' the temple, revealing a passage. Matrim recognises the crest of his elven kingdom, Farathon, among the instructions to the ritual.
After clearing a trap the party heads down a long spiral staircase and fights a group of subterrainian predators who they quickly dispatch. Searching the room the party finds some loot and an odd Onyx tablet.
Investigating one final room the party finds some sort of mechanism and meets Mindartis, a soul who has been trapped within the machine toi act as a user guide. Apparently this machine is some sort of ultimate portal generator (create portals anywhere, anytime, even other planes) created by the elves when they held dominion over this area. It was probably going to be used for military application as deducted by Matrim. It's missing several key components though including a key, a channeling rod and conductor crystals. It also needs an adequate power supply.
Mindartis confirms that he's also met the drow and explains that they didn't use the portal. He does mention that they're probably looking for the pieces however and he mentions they carried an adequate power supply with them. At this point it's obvious the drow had some intention to use the portal.
Mindartis then has his soul transferred to the portable tablet, explaining that with this he can stay with the party and locate missing portal pieces for them while in return, he isn't sent to the black abyss to wait for the portal to be re-powered again. He does mention he is not an essential piece to the portal however, if he's missing the drow could still start it up. The good news is the portal is so complex, they'd need a lot of time to figure things out if they returned with the adequate pieces.
The group decides to venture into the Spider Caves once again in order to dispatch the Spider Queen (although I was uncertain why, you guys were never formally hired to do this. I figured you had a plan). Ravinna figured out the Spider's Lullaby the party heard puts all the spiderlings to sleep and Mindartis, coming into close proximity with a component, detects the Key to the portal machine. The party manages to retrieve the key, almost avoiding angering the spider queen but is forced into confrontation and trounces her.
The party met Berend, who has apparently been trapped down in the Queen's Lair for months. He was left here by another party after they were nearly defeated by the Spider Queen.
Leaving together the party takes Berend and heads to the research facility/temple where the portal device is. They use Mindartis to scan for missing components and Mindartis is able to locate two, one to the East (Palmer's Haven) about a day and a half away and one to the West (Whitestone) about a day away.
During the night Ravinna slips away, telling Goresh that things have gotten far more dangerous than she anticipated. She apologises and asks Goresh to relay the message.
The party returns to Brixham to resupply before deciding to head off to Whitestone. While in Brixham the party learns that Pirrett, the drow they had captured, somehow escaped with narry a trace. Enraged, Kalek leaves the group to hunt down the drow.
After sorting out their agenda Berend, the new dwarven shaman, summons a spirit guide to lead the party across the mountain to the dwarven city of Whitestone as the party is determined to search out a possible component for Mindartis's portal machine.
The party travels across the mountain...
Special Items:
Mindartis's Tablet
Spoiler
Onyx Tablet
This tablet houses the soul of Mindartis temporarily, allowing him to communicate with the group freely along with performing other services.
Talk - At-will (Free Action)
You must be holding the tablet with one hand to do this.
Speak with Mindartis. Mindartis appears as a 10 inch high holographic form who walks on the broad surface of the tablet.
Monster Scan - Encounter (Minor Action) - Range 5
Mindartis can scan a creature of your choice within range regardless of DC. Once done Mindartis can tell you the vulnerabilities, resistances, defenses and Maximum HP of the target.
Component Scan - Special
During an extended rest Mindartis can scan the area for components needed to complete the portal. Mindartis scans an area of 2 days away in all directions.
Once the scan is complete, Mindartis can tell you the direction of the component and the approximate distance in 1/4 day travel intervals.
If this scan is interrupted in any way it can be put on hold until Mindartis is able to complete it. Results are only available once the scan has completed successfully. If Mindartis is moved too far from the initial scanning point (beyond a 1/4 day travel) the scan cannot be completed.
Ping Component - Encounter (Free)
Any components which were identified in the last scan can be pinged for approximate direction and distance. Results are returned with the same accuracy as a full scan.
Also, if you want a particular speech colour, claim it here.

It makes it easy to distinguish what your character is saying from your descriptions. It also helps me with immersion, cause I can just read the colored text and it's like participating in the conversation.

Ah, well that I can understand. I always assumed that it was for ease of knowing which character was which. I'll be honest, my memory is terrible. I will see green, look to see that it was SPoD's character, and promptly not know what character SPoD is playing. That's why I like to put my character's name, race and class at the top of all my posts, underlined. Hopefully, it allows people to read that first and go, "Okay, now I know who's talking/acting."
But now that I understand the reason for the colored chat, it makes a lot more sense and I don't feel so silly for doing it. Thanks! But now, one last question: why do they need to be different colors?

I can't speak for anyone else, but when I'm having a direct back-and-forth conversation in PbP, I quote the person who I'm responding to. It's not unheard of for one person to respond to two or three different people as part of a group conversation, and they'll all be in the same post. It just makes it easier to keep track of who is saying what.
Also, in a non-visual medium, individual color choice is one way to showcase your character's style.
Including the name is a good idea, too, though. I should edit my post.

The reason for the different colors is for those of us who do remember which color is which character. If a game goes on long enough, I no longer need to look at who posted to know who's speaking because I associate the color with the character. Also, think of the color the same way you might speak with an accent or change your slang when playing in person. Just another way to separate what the character does from what they're saying.

Maybe it's just me being paranoid since I've never been in a PbP game that lasted past page 3, but I'm a bit worried about the fact that the DM hasn't shown up in over a day and a half after making the initial post. I hope Sipex is okay.

Apologies, I post sporadically on the weekends due to a busy life schedule, I'm more reliable on the weekdays where I'll post at least once a day.
From my experience most PbP games work along this medium where the weekends are kind of 'post if you can' while the weekdays are seen as the more regular posting time.
I thought I saw you mention that in the recruitment thread, but I couldn't find the post >.<

Ahh -- I wasn't aware of that. Then again, I've not had a PbP game make it past page 3, so there's not much experience for me to go on.

Please keep in mind that while 4e does make everything sound nice and restricted I do encourage and reward creative thinking using the items and powers you have along with basic physics and such. Electricity can be conducted through water, jumping on a target from above can grant advantages and a flaming weapon can be used to keep you warm.
If you're unsure, post it anyways, as long as your character is actually capable of doing it I'm pretty receptive.
Question: In 4e, do commoners/NPCs have their own healing surges? Or is that only a PC/monster thing?

Am I right in the assumption that the rock is half as large as a cart?

It's about that size, yes, single horse cart so we're looking at something a bit over 6 ft in height. You can make checks in game if you want to see if you can determine more accurate measurements.
edit: I put a more detailed desription of the situation in the newest post.
Wish list for Matrim (so far):
Gauntlets of Blood - 4
Iron Armbands of Power - 6
Hungry Spear - 7
Coif of Mindiron - 8
Steadfast Amulet - 8
Feyslaughter Weapon (spear) - 9
Cloak of Distortion - 9
Strikebacks - 10
Periapt of Cascading Health - 10
Diamond Cincture - 10

Level ups would be fine by me. We don't really need to know how much exp we have.

Actually, it would be helpful for me to understand how much XP is gained per encounter. But if everyone else is against it, it's not that big of a deal.
Also, I just noticed the wish list request, I'll take a look and see what would make Ravinna drool later tonight.

I love that Matrim could've beat the DC by himself without any of the circumstance bonuses if he'd actually rolled well. It's quite a bit cooler to have everybody contribute though, so this worked out better and is one of the better "get the party together" scenes I've been invovled in.
Hmm, knowing ahead of time that we are getting close could help me narrow down feats/powers for the next level. I'd like to know how much XP we have.

Matrim looks at the weapon in his hands and says, "How silly of me to have overlooked my weapon when looking for a lever. Give me a hand with this, will you?" he says to the tiefling next to him. With that, he puts the spear in a likely spot and heaves with all his might.
I actually thought of using my magical staff as a lever, but with a new DM it's hard to know how they'll judge things. I could just see a DM who did a lot with previous editions or games saying, "Okay, your staff breaks." So I opted for the safer route: try to find a different lever.

Yeah, I realise Matrim could've but you all just came together on this one boulder and the roll was just perfect that it felt right to pose this as a team effort.
Also, I would not break something of yours that cheaply, I'd give you a warning if you were at logical risk of it ie:"You insert your staff as a lever and begin to push on it but it begins to bend slightly. It looks like any additional pressure would risk breakage."
