And wow, that's really sweet. I know just how...passionate...shipping can get, so that means a lot. And does that mean that you're going to write a Serrin/Matt fic?
Very tempted to, but I don't have the time at the moment... if I find the time I might use that (non-canon I think) beach scene as setting

Aaand the market is already going wild! This is the opportunity to put twelveth-level casters back on the map in this tough economic climate! Coffee, if we get a contract going now, chances are we will jump-start a world full of magic and headgear-assisted homicide and even get crazy rich doing so! What... do you say?
So those of you who thought that this would be a moment of heartwarming...did I succeed?
Yes. It got that way towards the end; it seems that Matt deserved that second chance after all.
And I look forward to seeing how their dinner goes. Hopefully it won't end in weasels.

If I'm not told what I do wrong, how can I ever learn?
EDIT: Ugh, Iris (Saphrin's hawk familiar) doesn't have the correct hawk plumage. Most of them have barred belly feathers of a different color than their back and wing feathers. If you'll excuse me, I'm going to do some research and see which bird of prey she shares the most similarity with.
EDIT (again): Iris is either a Nankeen Kestrel or an American Kestrel. She's probably an American Kestrel, though unfortunately I don't think I can draw the barring in her model. This also means that she's technically a falcon, not a hawk.
I promise to draw my birds of prey and other animals with more accuracy from now on. I'm really kicking myself for the flub. (And even if you didn't notice, I want to be accurate for my own sake).
Well, then, one thing that'll show up from now on on the TV Tropes page will be "Shown Their Work". (Murphy's Law: what happens when two dozen Tropers get together.)

Yep! I'm really trying to show my work here, incorporating science wherever I can, even in a world with functional magic (and even that follows a slightly modified form of the scientific method). It's annoying though, since I'm only a freshman in college, and I only know enough to know how much I don't know. Which makes me want to learn even more. Also, I'm a biology major, not a physics or chemistry major. Really, I know I should stop spending so much time teasing out every little detail in Aequar, but...
Don't worry, Coffee. You're not the only one with these urges. It's common among the sciencey people who have a creative side.
Great. Now I sound dirty.
I have that problem....except I also have this problem where I keep coming up with more magic systems and want to think out all of them, which means I had to come up with a universe to contain all of them, meaning there are like thousands of worlds with many different magic systems in my universe, all of which is explained by an even greater magic system to explain all the others existence.....

Ugh...sounds oddly familiar...^^' Being a storyteller and an engineer can also be...complicated
Or well, engineer-in-training, but still...

I get around the 'plan out several conflicting magic systems' by designing ones that are possible to loophole. Thus, if I need a plot device that doesn't fit perfectly into my magic system, I pick a loophole and exploit the heck out of it. Also, it allows me to fit several different magic styles inside each other under the premise of different interpretations of where the loopholes are and in what ways they are exploited.
Case: One magic system uses strings of magic to manipulate objects. Another uses fire. Nothing says they aren't both just using flaming strings.

I just stress that magical theory is just that: theory. In addition, it only talks about classification of practice. For instance, "divine magic comes from an outside source and is strengthened by willpower. The outside force is generally thought to be a deity" and "sorcery draws power from within the caster and a link has been drawn between spell power and force of personality."

Meh, I mostly bullcrap my way round it by just saying that magic is a form of energy than's used to power stuff, and that it works like most forms of energy.
Although I still get to the nitty-gritty of biology and FTL attempts s, and I can understand having several conflicting settings.
