I know it's taking a bit for the game to start, but I would like to try this from the top. I hope you can be patient with me a little bit longer whilst we run through the city creation.

And to verify: we've got a majority for Chest-Deep, Alternate Universe, with Brisbane being the city of choice. If you would like that changed, now's the time.

So the first step would be be Themes and Threats regarding the City.

Groovy.

So, Alternate Universe just that Dresden doesn't exist, right?

Glad to be on board, and don't worry about the delay. I've been busy, too, especially with work.

Aside from Harry not being around, is there anything we should know about the alternate universe, or are we figuring that out along with everything else?

Also, do you mean the Brisbane in Australia, or the Brisbane in Wales?

Well, the way I see it Dresden and his adversaries have to not exist in their current form (which can be something as simple as them having other plans and opportunities), seeing as he does stop a whole bunch of nasty stuff from happening, simply removing him from the equation does not make it any better.

Well, lets see, according to Wikipedia Brisbane has another name in popular culture "Bris Vegas" because of its thriving nightlife and casinos.

It's also the second-fastest growing capital city in the world, growing at a rate of approximately 11% every four years and nearly 1/3rd of its population was born over seas.

In addition, a great many of its Historic buildings were constructed by convict labor.

So here are the themes that occur to me;
"We All Have a History" reflecting first off Brisbane's history of acting as a penal colony, but introducing the idea that most people living there have done or been something in the past that you wouldn't think looking at them, and that maybe they're not particularly proud of.

"A City of New Faces" meaning that a lot of people in the city haven't been there for terribly long, and that maybe the established powers both good and evil are under threat from new arrivals.

It's also a Port city, so maybe we can do something with that? But I'm not sure what.

"The Sea Washes Away All Sins"

After all, people set sail in search of a new life. Sure, there was a lot of Transportation, but it was a place to start over without the burden of your past.

"A New World, An Old World"

To represent all the old things that lived in Australia before the arrival of the Europeans - there's a lot of history before Cook and Brisbane arrived.

I like "The Sea Washes Away All Sins.

I think "A City of New Faces" and "A New World, An Old World" overlap, but if we're only going to use one I think I'd prefer "A New World, An Old World" because it seems more descriptive.

Also, "A New World, An Old World" makes me think of faeries and the old etiquette they follow.

A Google search reveals quite a few urban legends worth considering.

For example, rumors of crocodiles in the Brisbane River. But what if they weren't crocodiles? (Possible aspect: The Official Unofficial Explanation)

To take a hint from the chapter on Baltimore in Your Story, there was a major ferry disaster in 1890 in which more than 50 people died. In fact, the River has claimed many lives over the years. (Possible aspect: Deep Waters)

Something draws cars toward Toowong Cemetary. The scientific explanation is a magnetic lodestone, but there's a lot of talk about the ghost of a child who died in a car accident. (Possible aspect: Not So Free Parking)

A good start: I've thrown up a quick sheet, so that we can keep track of everything.

We've got 7 possible aspects at the moment, some of which overlap, does anyone else have anything else they'd like to see included in the city?

So, Brisbane is called Bris Vegas, since it isn't "sophisticated," and a site I found suggests that there aren't any good, proper pubs for hanging out in. Let's explore the more superficial and crass.

Oh, sorry Chain - my idea was that there's a lot to discover there, about the supernatural history of the area; that there's lots of things unknown and hidden away from view.

City Of New Faces covers more a disruption of the existing status quo, to my mind.

No reason to apologize, this is meant to be collaborative

I'm not entirely sure how "No Free Parking" or "Deep Water" would affect the game.

They would both be threats, meaning that they're problems which plague the city on a larger scale, and are supposed to be somewhat persistent problems which I can invoke. Essentially, you get to chose some facet of what plagues the city, in the form of either direct adversaries like the aspect "The Red Court is Moving in on the City" or something more nebulous like "Deep Water".

Still here just taking my time in Research.

"Gateway to war." A million Soldiers passed through Brisbane to war in thr Pacific and thousands fought in the American War in Afghanistan. Brisbane has a high population of veterans and those who know how to wage war. (Possible trouble with criminal being better tained and armed than average thugs. Or an aspect with a tight community of vigilantes who fight against evil.)

I think next is important people - specifically a few who want to uphold the Status Quo, and a few who want to change it. They don't all have to be bad guys, but with our power level where it is I think most of them should be.

You know what's awesome? Faeries are awesome. I think there should be a gang of Changelings that have forsaken their obligations to the Summer and Winter courts and are trying to start their own Third court!

And their leader is a ruthless man named Reginald whose father was a troll, but who gets a ruthless intelligence from his mother that he's afraid of losing if he ever makes the change. Take how freaking scary things like dementia or Alzheimer's are and replace the worry that you might get those things as you age with a certainty that not only will you get them, but they will also make you violently psychopathic. That is what he is dealing with, and he is looking to establish a third Court in hopes that he can find a way to stave the change off a little while longer.

Not that I expected to, but I didn't find any specific clues online as to what the supernatural status quo should be.

But I did learn about a mythical creature called the Rainbow Serpent. It's known as the Targan in the area of Brisbane, and is said to move through the land as its namesake, alternately and randomly handing out disasters and blessings.

The idea of a powerful and unpredictable magical being might make a good Theme or Threat. (Aspect: Wildcard)

Edit: Didn't see the posts above. If we're done with Themes and Threats, how about an NPC?

Very cool. I'm toying with building a changeling from an extinct court, actually, and this would provide a plot hook for him. He could be in town because he sees an opportunity to begin building Autumn anew (if he chooses to embrace his heritage), or he is suspicious of Reginald (if he rejects it).

I'm pretty sure the above constitutes rockers of the boat. That said, interesting idea.

I personally like this one quite a lot, it makes it feel like there's something ancient about Australia, and that there is power in the old dust that has yet to really be touched by humanity.

But before we decide who wants to keep the status quo (supernatural and otherwise) and who doesn't, determining what it is, is probably a good idea.

The Status Quo: Brisbane, apparently, doesn't have very good local watering holes, places to just hang out, have a drink with friends. And there's a reason for that.

A cabal of bassarids, who immigrated to Brisbane, in fact, control or influence a large number of the pubs in the city, either through owning the local breweries or the pubs themselves.

I quite like the idea that the status quo is up in the air - all the "new" supernatural creatures, the ones that arrived with the European settlers, are still squabbling over pecking order. All the old, established supernaturals from ancient times are watching the new comers with a mixture of fear, anger and curiosity.

Sorry I didn't post anything on this sooner, but I've not had any wonderful ideas for the status quo so was letting you guys handle it - but all this quiet is making me worried!

That sounds good. Additionally, what about the idea that some of the local powers came to Australia seeking refuge? Black Court vampires, for example. Admittedly, the Nevernever can make long distance travel easy, but as far as I can remember, not everyone has the ability to use it.

Okay, so an "emerging" status quo, which fits well for Brisbane, as it is a growing place, maybe it's a very transient place regarding the supernatural.

On a separate note, this has been going really slowly, would people be more willing to do this over say Skype as to hammer it out in a couple of hours so that we can get started, instead of drawing it out as we have been, it seems to be adversely affecting the game.

That's not a particularly great concern for me, I'm up early for my work (4:45 AM), so I'd be fine with doing so on a non-workday. The next day during which I have nothing to do is my tomorrow, after which it'll have to be my Saturday.

We've still got to manage the status quo mundane and supernatural, then the themes and threats get turned into locations and NPCs. At least that's how the guidelines would have it.

The guidelines for this game are super murky. I think the best thing we can do is move onto character creation.
