Hunter: the Vigil - Witch hunting. Recruitment & Organization Thread.
This is the recruitment and organization thread for the Hunter: the Vigil game that was mentioned in the WoD discussion thread in the Roleplaying section. I'm also recruiting players who didn't voice their interest in that thread.
To start off, I'd like all players who expressed interest and those who want to do it now to answer a few questions before presenting their character sheets. First, where would you like the game to take place? When I ran it for my other group, it was in a medium-sized Polish city. It went fine, even though none of my other players were Polish. What's your preference?
The Big 16:
Spoiler
1. What game system are you running (D&D, Call of Cthulu, Palladium, GURPS, etc.), and if applicable what edition (Original, Classic, Revised, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 10th, etc.)?
New World of Darkness, Hunter: the Vigil.
2. What 'type' or variant of game will it be (i.e. "Shadow Chasers" or "Agents of Psi" for d20 Modern)? What is the setting for the game (eg. historic period, published or homebrewed campaign setting, alternate reality, modern world, etc.)?
A fairly typical Hunter game focused on investigation.
3. How many Players are you looking for? Will you be taking alternates, and if so, how many?
Depends on how many potential players I end up with.
4. What's the gaming medium (OOTS, chat, e-mail etc.)?
This forums, most likely.
5. What is the characters' starting status (i.e. experience level)?
Standard starting characters unless I'm persuaded otherwise.
6. How much gold or other starting funds will the characters begin with?
Normal rules for the Resources merit.
7. Are there any particular character classes, professions, orders, etc. that you want... or do not want? What are your rules on 'prestige' and/or homebrewed classes?
8. What races, subraces, species, etc. are allowed for your game? Will you allow homebrewed races or species? 'Prestige' races or species?
To answer both questions, all core Compacts and Professions are available.
9. By what method should Players generate their attributes/ability scores and Hit Points?
Normal nWoD rules.
10. Does your game use alignment? What are your restrictions, if so?
I might use some of the alternate rules for Moralty presented in the Hunter rulebook.
11. Do you allow multi-classing, or have any particular rules in regards to it?
Not applicable.
12. Will you be doing all of the die rolling during the course of the game? Will die rolls be altered, or left to the honor system? If players can make die rolls, which ones do they make, how should they make the rolls, and how should they report them?
I'll make the rolls for NPCs and possibly reroll the 10s to speed things up.
13. Are there any homebrewed or optional/variant rules that your Players should know about? If so, list and explain them, or provide relevant links to learn about these new rules.
No.
14. Is a character background required? If so, how big? Are you looking for anything in particular (i.e. the backgrounds all ending up with the characters in the same city)?
Backgrounds should be somewhat compatibile with each other and all PCs should be familiar with the city the chronicle will take place in,
15. Does your game involve a lot of hack & slash, puzzle solving, roleplaying, or a combination of the above?
The story will mostly consist of investigation. Combat is likely to occur at some point, however.
16. Are your Players restricted to particular rulebooks and supplements, or will you be allowing access to non-standard material? What sources can Players use for their characters?
I allow the core nWoD book, Hunter rulebook, Compacts & Conspiracies, Night Stalkers, Witch Finders and Spirit Slayers.

I was waiting on the thread to express interest because I didn't want to clutter up the discussion thread.
Oh well. Call me if you need another warm body.

Hm, I see. I'll change the name of this thread to general recruitment in case there are more people who did the same. The more players, the better. So you're still free to submit a sheet.

My character sheet. He's a friendly neighborhood Union doctor, who has a problem with all these monsters sending him more people to treat.

My character is Nigel Albion, he's is a aspiring med-student & athlete, maybe my character could work for Baxter'190's?
Here are some of the details I want to incorporate in his back-story, some of which we already discussed, I've also tossed ideas with Doktor Per, who might be interested in joining us.
Not sure how to adapt my character to Poland, maybe foreign exchange student?
I never got around to play a Hunter chronicle, so yes, I'd really like to partecipate.
Just, well, it's been a while since the last time I played in the nWoD, so I'll need a couple of days to find out my books and refresh my memory about the rules.
Here's my submission, Lazlo Fidkowski. Assuming we're doing this thing in Poland, he's the owner of a failing gunsmith's shop--after all, with this kind of economic downturn, who has money for a 400 Euro hunting rifle, no matter how well it's made? It was started by his grandfather, who helped make zip guns for Polish partisans during the War and snowballed it into a career, which was expanded upon when his father took over the shop. Now that Dad's dead (lung cancer; he went really quick) and Pop-pop can't move around so great anymore, it's up to him to figure out how to keep the business afloat. That was really his only concern before the old man came in with the Peacemaker.
He said it was an antique; had it in his family for generations, but now it was starting to act up when he needed it. Thing was stained in blood, the barrel was crusted with residue from nitrates Lazlo never considered for handloading, and the bore had been sized up a great deal, almost to the point of bursting the thing. After a thorough cleaning and hull reinforcement, the weapon performed admirably once again, and the man invited Lazlo to come down to his local lodge--he had a few hunting buddies who's guns needed tune-ups. Lazlo agreed, but never really expected to see what he did when he got there...
I just had an idea, why not have one group play as the hunters, while an opposing group plays a supernatural, the gm chooses the theme, & plays the plot/npcs & other antagonists?
The concept i'm throwing at you guys is you wouldn't have to chose a hunter,if the group is interested in targeting a specific group in the game, one or more could play the hunted, for instance, a vampire, a changeling, a created, or something of that power-level. Higher tier games would include, mages, geniuses, & sin-eaters
That sounds like a more interesting proposition, but we'd have to see what the ST thinks, could definitely make for a much more lively story though and free up some of the load for the gm on the antagonist side of things.
Of course there's always the possibility the players running the supernatural side of things might prove elusive, and become bitter rivals with the hunters as the hunters uncover and destroy various bases of operations they may have setup, or are trying to setup.

I decided to recruit people normally, actually. So you can still submit a sheet. I'll pick the cell out of those I have as is usual.
As for the suggestion - it's interesting, but I don't think I'll run it. I have a story planned and the proposition wouldn't really work like that.
Regarding the location, it doesn't have to be in Poland. I was planning to work it out with players once it's clear who ends up in the game and who doesn't. Then again, it's something that affects your backstory...

The recruitment will last a few days, so take your time.
And finally - I have not made it clear enough, but this is a Tier 2 game, so your characters should come with Compact membership. (Bolded because it's important; I'll also add it to the OP.)

I'm always up for scum huntin'. I got a few ideas scrolling around in my head already! But they sort of depend on location.
Burnt out Slash or MC Hammer type in the Ashwood Abbey, having found a new lease on life. If we're going to be working in a nice place, like San Fran, New York, Milan or London. Being a has been still stings.
On the flipside, I would love playing a neurotic Network Zero guy, a young film student sort of guy who straps cameras on himself in case he ever "misses something." Just trying to figure out what's going on since sometimes things just don't make sense. (Mostly human communication, but I'd be relying on you guys to be the smooth talkers and lie detectors in that case)
And then to round out the circle nicely, a Union member, mother and army sniper who just got back from the region appropriate conflict. Mentally she hasn't quite made it back and is struggling with the vigil, her marriage and family life.
I don't actually know the Detroit area, but I must admit that the idea of playing there is amazing. If ever there was a troubled city.
Would never object to playing in a miniature setting such as Reykjavik and that whole area.
If we're thinking of doing it somewhere not in Poland, I would suggest Philadelphia. I've never done a game there, and that is where the Hunter setting is kind of centered (the fact that I live there and I have a very intimate knowledge of the city holds no sway over my decision ).
Though I'd be fine anywhere, really. If it ends up being in America I'll just make Lazlo's grandfather an immigrant.
Ok, now my memory is a bit more clear. Almost done.
Poland, you say? No problem for me: Warsaw is beautiful and the Wieliczka Salt Mines are one of most awesome place I've ever seen in my entire life. Count me in.
Glad to see people quite a few people interested.
Now, another thing: no matter which country we end up setting the game in, it's going to be a medium-sized city at most, since the plot assumes there are few other Hunters there. So Philadelphia and Warsaw don't fit. The city I ran the game last time - Krosno in southeastern Poland - is a little below 50k people in population.

Looks fine. Might need some adjustments for Poland and a backstory, of course.

I'm not sure how I feel about combat styles. From what I hear, they're somewhat broken. Other than that, he still needs a backstory.

Professor Leszek Milosz ready to go! Background at the bottom of the sheet.
Looks quite fine. I don't have much to comment on.
And as you might have guessed, I will indeed run the game in Poland after all, since there seems to be no objection. Minor objection, though: Poland doesn't use Euros as currency. Our money is called Zloty, plural Zlotys.

I mostly have ideas not anything concrete at the moment for his backstory, as for the fight-styles, well there a little strong but their nothing compared to a supernatural'ls powers.
Anita Negri assuming we're rolling in Poland (which is great!)
Anita is about to graduate from college with her BA in Film, but as of late she's been preoccupied. While doing some research for her final project, she got in contact with some wild video journalists online and her eyes are kind of getting more and more open to the things around her. You know there are creatures out there in the shadow, man. She hasn't really seen anything with her own eyes, but some of those videos man... They looked real and they're never gonna leave her head. She needs some answers.
Socially, she's a recluse. She always used to be sort of the type to keep to herself, but this last year... It's been pretty largely hermetical except for classes and going out to shoot by herself. The company she keeps is largely online, it isn't doing her mental health any favors. She realizes this, she needs to get out there and meet people, but there's so many questions that need answering.
(If someone wants her as a tag along, we can probably work something out!)
I'm cool with that, you want to also play some genius or exalted on the side? I'm enlisting in one if your interested.
Anything else Back-story-wise, I suggested earlier that I be studying under Baxter190's doctor: Brendan Newark, but I was wondering...how lightly I could take my character, because I'm starting to think he resembles a certain-Ninja Doctor.
Here is how I think everything is connected. Brendan, my character, is a local doctor in the city who tries to help out with the underprivledged members of society. In such a line of duty, it was inevitable he found traces of attacks that couldn't be, links into the world of darkness. It was at one such free clinic, where he met Leszek. Together, the decided to work together, and help protect the people that couldn't protect themselves.
His protege, Nigel, was soon drawn into the Vigil as well, and with him brought Anita. A girl who knew a little too much, and was all to willing to prove she wasn't going crazy, she helped bring so much needed intel to the group. Lazlo was the last to join, only having been brought in when it became apparent that the group needed some real firepower. The man likely had been going solo before, but was recruited by Brendan who previously bought firearms from the man for his safety before the Vigil.
