Re: Capt. Ido learns to steal thread ideas (and also draw)!
And we're back! I took a couple of days off from life to get my head back into the game. Last week was a rough one at work, and I was losing focus pretty much everywhere to the detriment of pretty much everything. No post-worthy art from that time, nothing than meaningless scribbles BUT all was not lost. I wandered over to the bookstore and spent some time browsing the Art section, and came home with quite and amazing guide on clothing and drapery that I am very excited for. It's seriously a solid manual, and breaks everything down in exactly the way that I process, so I expect some positive things in the future :)
That's all well and good though, because you didn't come here to read words, yall are expecting some doodles from this Captain, so here we go!
Day 153 - Harpess WIP#1
Spoiler
Spent a good 40 minutes on this tonight, and I'm glad with this start. Rough sketch so far, but the form is there, I think. I always love requests, and I have decided to take this one probably in a different direction than was intended, but those are the breaks when the request is given in only two words
I'm going to tell myself this now, I will only spend two more days maximum on this piece for this week. Work expands to fill the time allotted, I always find, so I'm imposing a deadline on acceptable completion. Lineart for sure no later than two days, preferably tomorrow. Color if there's time and available energy.
Re: Capt. Ido learns to steal thread ideas (and also draw)!
Day 154 - Harpess WIP#2
Spoiler
A sweet solid 45 minutes done tonight! I meant to get an hour, but I realized that I forgot to actually save my references from last night, so I had to spend 15 minutes digging for them again X__X
On the whole, I like where this is going! It's not perfect, and at the least I need to clean up some linework, but I think if I were to just leave it here I could give myself a solid B for effort. Let's see what happens tomorrow, where I'll take a second look at this lineart and add some polish.
Edit: If anyone sees any glaring flaws in this drawing, TODAY is the day to point them out, before I do any coloring or junk to this =S

Day 155 - Harpess Lineart
Spoiler
Not a lot of drastic differences going on today, I went through and did some little tweaks and a lot of general cleanup around the edges. Restrung the harp, because the old one felt sloppy.
Speaking of sloppy, I think tomorrow I'll try and color this.
Re: Capt. Ido learns to steal thread ideas (and also draw)!
So when I say "tomorrow" I mean "tomorrow, unless my friends all come to my house and literally kidnap me, forcing me to spend time enjoying myself outside of the house socializing and otherwise throwing a massive wrench in all my weekend plans despite my careful planning". Because that is what my weekend became So! I decided to just keep the streak going and not even color that mess even now that I have the time.
Day 156 - Potential
Spoiler
Decided to try my hand at a stallion, instead of the usual mare. Surprisingly tricky! I think I got the line width down, too. Cool deals!

He's really chubby in the flank. Head's good though!

^What Thanqol said. Keep him on a strict diet of low-fat hay for a bit and see how he looks. I'd consider maybe shortening the neck a little too, but I lack a witty way to say it that doesn't involve horrendous medical procedures.

Oh man, what if that was all that I actually had after slacking off all that time? Man oh man I'd have to slap myself. Nah, for reals here we go:
Day 158 - Manic
Spoiler
Oof! That definitely took a solid three hours to throw down. Felt good though. I am for the first time in a while relatively happy with myself with a drawing of a person. Probably helps we can't see the face though >_>
I will be the first to admit that I've once again slacked off, and this time with the delicious enticements of a fresh TF2 update. Time to crack the whip and give myself the punishments and force a solid month of updates no breaks or excuses. Yep, that's right. 31 updates, ignoring yesterday because I decided this right now. That means I'll have to make two posts on one of these days, again not counting today because that's a piece of garbage that I made sometime last week. Let's do this Leeroy Jenkins!
Re: Capt. Ido learns to steal thread ideas (and also draw)!
159 - Present
Spoiler
So, there I was, well into yesterday's drawthread drawing, when suddenly, I get an email from Valve! I thought to myself, well how odd, this doesn't normally happen. As it turned out, I found myself accepted into the early Source Filmmaker Beta! So I did what any creative nut would do and drop all of my current obligations and spend every waking moment playing with and learning how to use this shiny new tool. And that's that!
I'll finish this up tomorrow night, but for the record, I consider this a positive and rare learning experience, so I'm taking this opportunity by the horns while I can, that said and done ^^;;
Re: Capt. Ido learns to steal thread ideas (and also draw)!
This may or may not be the exact definition of irony: I took a rest, geared myself up for a strong month of nothing but pure momentum and updates and improvement. Within 24 hours I was given a beta key to Source Filmmaker, a program my fledgling inner animator has been aching to use for years. As such, I immediately felt compelled to pause drawthread so at least give SFM a proper dabbling and give an old, old creative itch an extremely well needed outlet.
And that is the story of how I didn't draw anything for a week, but feel justified in doing so because it was in exchange for 35-40 hours of instructional creative learning in something that I am equally passionate about. Plus it resulted in an actual video.
That said, those 35-40 hours not only drew from my drawthread time, but also my video games, and most of my sleep. I am physically and mentally exhausted right now, and will rest up, get my strength back up, and hit a big fat RESET button on my month of updates, to begin again officially this Sunday. Sunday as opposed to tomorrow or Saturday, because I'm going to be attending a wedding for an old friend of mine and will be out of town. I'll try and grab some doodletime, but for me, mentally, Month Of Awesome Updating Habits begins Sunday July 15th.
See you then! Please feel free to mock my shoddy cinematography and animations in the meanwhile.

What can I say? I'm dangerous when I'm low on ideas! Also one of these days my willingness to draw the first thing suggested to me will get me into trouble, I just know it.
Anyway, let's move this along, shall me?

Day 161 - [s] Lone Wanderer: Ascend
Spoiler
The following is an account of the final mortal day of Gordan Freeman, of Vault 101. Spoilers for a 4 year old game inside:
Spoiler
but this is what's more important
last episode, i finished Waters of Life
in which dad is killed in a in game cutscene in which i could have saved him had the door been open
so Lone Wanderer is mad
has to escort stupid NPCs to the citadel
i'm loaded with items, at my carrying limit here
get to the citadel, cool cool fasttravel to megaton
i immediately get the plea from Amata about the vault
i dump my stuff, go to the vault
that happens, i get the peaceful solution
and as i'm walking out, everyone is grouchy and mad at me, and i'm not allowed to go back
so i leave the vault, and in game, the Lone Wanderer is mad
and cranky
he just lost his dad
he had grouchy people yelling at him all the way while he was saving them
got kicked out of his home forever even though he saved their lives too
walk out, see the DC landscape
I walk forward a little bit, there's a deathclaw 50 yards to the right
LW is mad
"Empty an entire clip into its face"
as i'm ripping its hand from its warm corpse, i turn and guess what i see
a friggen ENCLAVE CAMP they're trying to set up, half a mile from megaton!
RIGHT THERE
Now, from their perspective:
lightly armed, no-armor officer is tending to some equipment
hellfire with a strange new weapon stands guard
regular enclave powersuit is patrolling
there's some weird satellite dish set up and some boxes
the hellfire sighs at his boring post, and turns away from the officer to see what the patrol has to say
rippling out of thin air, the figure of a man rises from the ground, gauss rifle pointed square at his back
Critical Sneak Attack, he flies through the air, dead before his body hits the pile of metal supply crates
his officer turns, sees his fallen soldier, and shouts almost in slow motion, reaching for his plasma pistol
he only manages two shots before becoming a bloody mess himself
the patrol is horrified, and races to the scene
he stoops for a moment by his fellow hellfire comrade
then rises to meet his attacker, bringing his brother's Heavy Incinerator
the Lone Wanderer charges
bolts of flame cascade around him, burning land, base, bodies, and his assailant
but the gauss speaks ever louder, and he too falls
Gordon Freeman, the Lone Wanderer stands alone
his armor crackles, and the smell of burnt flesh fills his nostrils
he turns to survey the ruined camp, smoldering in his rage
[s] Lone Wanderer: Ascend
Level Up => 30
Assign Skill Points: Only 8 to assign, as this brings the final two to 100.
Choose Perk: Almost Perfect
Pipboy: Are you sure you want to fast-travel to [all the SPECIAL bobblehead locations]?
and thus did the Enclave awaken the god of the wasteland
Re: Capt. Ido learns to steal thread ideas (and also draw)!
How can I do today's drawing?
Day 162 - When it's already here
Spoiler
Doing outstanding commitments is fun! Especially when I not only get them done right, but also soon enough that I can get a decent night's sleep! Hooray!
Lord English is a scary dude with lots of scary fanart references to go off of, btw. Shame that I don't have any good gif making software, or else I'd totally have done the cloak and the eyes...
Re: Capt. Ido learns to steal thread ideas (and also draw)!
I was beating myself over the head, wondering why I was so tired and uncreative as I was getting today's work done. Then it occurred to me that in three days I have spent eight hours drawing, as opposed to the usual 3ish.
Day 163 - Face the Facts
Spoiler
After looking at several other forumer's faces, I dug this exercise out from the webwebs and started away on it. 25 drawings in one night is still a bit much for me, so I'll pop this out over the next day or so, maybe two if I decide to scrap any faces along the way. Tomorrow is the goal though, darn it forget what I said I'm finishing this then, tomorrow. Hard and fast goal let's do this.
Actually, let's get some sleep first, that sounds lovely.

Hey, so what is the best course action when your brain refuses to give you any ideas? That's right, mock it by drawing the ideal image of creativity: a blank canvas:
Day 164 - That thing I just said
Spoiler
Because sometimes (most times) things don't go as expected, but no matter what you have to soldier on and do SOMETHING.

Honestly, the best way to get ideas for things to draw is to engage in an Internet Argument and illustrate your position.
If the pen is mightier than the sword, the digital stylus is proportionately mightier than the pen.

Disclaimer: Any semblance of coolness, perceived or otherwise, is entirely coincidental, and should be ignored, and actively eliminated immediately upon observation. Drawing will continue otherwise as scheduled.
Day 166 - All in All
Spoiler
I was actually itching for a messy sketch today. It's nice to get things out of the ol' system when they arise.

Day 167 - cARTography
Spoiler
My DM has asked me for a map! Here is my first attempt.
I have learned that roads and rivers are indistinguishable without color, as are coastlines and borders. Only some of these things are present on this map.
Re: Capt. Ido learns to steal thread ideas (and also draw)!
Day 168 - Dragging
Spoiler
This is my victory over an art block. I told my drawing hand, if it wasn't going to give me an idea, then I will experiment and see what happens. And here's the result: a sketch made *entirely* out of messy scratches. I actually kind of like how the proportions ended up being. Not bad for zero framework, though I think I'm starting to see a tendency to make lanky characters...
